Windows 8 Still Offers Quick Admin Tools Access
One of the biggest concerns IT Pros and businesses had about Windows 8 was the hiding of the administrative and computer management features in the OS. With the new Metro interface being brought to the foreground, and the options available within it strictly limited people were concerned that the removal of the Start Menu, where traditionally a right-click on the Computer link would bring up the administrative options or where there was single-click access to the full Control Panel, would restrict or make difficult access when they needed it.
Now though it has emerged that the options are probably easier to find and get access to then in any version of Windows before as moving your mouse cursor (yup, folks you can’t do this with touch) to the extreme bottom left of the screen and right-clicking will display a menu with the administrative options all available.
In this menu are Programs and Features for uninstalling software, Network Connections, Power Options, the Event Viewer, System, Device manager, Disk Management, Computer Management, the Command Prompt (also with Administrator rights), the Task manager, Control Panel, Windows Explorer in case you accidentally unpin it from the Taskbar), Search and Run.
It is excellent having access to this menu and the administrative tools so easily and this menu will appear both on the desktop and on the Metro Start Screen.
Additionally people who need to diagnose and troubleshoot problems within the operating system will be pleased to hear that the Problem Steps Recorder still exists. Originally designed as a reporting tool for the Windows 7 Beta, Microsoft kept it in the final product after huge volumes of requests by testers and IT Pros.
As with Windows 7 it doesn’t appear in any menus but typing (searching for) PSR on the Start Screen will reveal it. This tool records screenshots when things change on your screen, highlighting the item that has changed and annotating the screenshots with information about running processes, memory and more that’s going on with your computer at that time. All round it is an excellent tool.#

Finally it’s been discovered that the PrintScreen key screenshot grabber has finally been upgraded and now also saves your screen grabs automatically to your Pictures folder if you press the Windows Key + Print Screen. Alas there’s no way to capture a single window with this feature now as you could previously with the addition of holing down the Shift key, which means that it’s still no full-time substitute for third-party grabbing and annotating tools, but as a step forward for most people this will be most welcome.
There are also manner of additional things now being found in Windows 8, such as now having to press Shift+F8 at start-up to access the boot menu. We will continue to report to you here the most important and significant finds. Though one thing that I sadly have to report is that there is definitely no kill switch for the Start Screen in Group Policy, something that even some ‘softies told me to expect. It is interesting to note though that even the references to the Classic Start Menu still exist there however, so it’s only a matter of time before third-party hackers and software companies come up will all manner of useful tweaks and mods for the OS.

Protect Files From Unauthorized Access With Encoding Decoding
Full disc encryption or encrypted container files are useful to prevent unauthorized access to a larger number of files. This may feel like overkill though if you only want to make sure that a single file is protected from access. That’s where a program like Encoding Decoding comes into play. The program, available as a portable version and setup, can be used to encrypt and decrypt individual files in record time.
All that needs to be done is to drag and drop a file into the application window to encrypt or decrypt files. A password prompt is displayed if you drag and drop an unencrypted file into the program interface. This password along with an internal algorithm is used to encrypt the file, so that only users with the password can decrypt it to access its contents. Encoding Decoding displays the password strength of the selected password directly in the program interface which can act as a guideline for users who want to make sure they select a secure password.

Please note that the original file will remain on the system. If you do not want that, you need to delete it manually as there is no option to delete the original file automatically after a successful encryption. Check out securely delete files if you want to delete the file so that it cannot be recovered anymore.
The decryption works in exactly the same way. Drag and drop an encrypted file into the program interface and enter the correct password to decrypt the file. The file is then saved to the same directory the encrypted file is stored in.

Users who do not want to drag and drop files into the interface can alternatively click in the program window to open the file browser. The program supports three different encoding algorithms which are unfortunately not explained in the program window, help file or the developer page.
Windows users interested in the program can download it from the developer website. It is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the operating system.

How To Access Grooveshark If It Is Blocked In Your Country
Grooveshark recently started to block German users from accessing the service citing unreasonable costs of operations in the country as the sole reason for the move. German users who try to access the Grooveshark website see an announcement that the service is no longer available to them.
There may be other countries or networks where Grooveshark is not accessible anymore. It feels only natural that some users try to access the site even though it is blocked in their country or organization. Some may even have paid for a premium account and do not want to be left standing in the rain now.
Grooveshark Unlocker is a Firefox add-on that uses an ingenious method of bypassing access restrictions. Grooveshark checks the user’s IP address during the initial connection and either displays the blocked service announcement page or the normal Grooveshark website. The add-on enables a web proxy for that time, and disables the proxy again after the connection has been established and the restrictions have been bypassed.

The developer notes that users of the add-on may need to refresh the page several times before the protection is bypassed. This was not necessary during tests, each connection attempt worked right of the bat.
This method ensures that users get the maximum out of their connection, as the proxy is disabled after the connection has been established. So no slow proxy that is not fast enough to buffer the music stream.
Grooveshark Unlocker ships with a single proxy that may be banned by Grooveshark or discontinued. You can open the extension’s settings to change the web proxy to another one. A click on Find a proxy in the settings opens a new page that allows you to display a list of working proxy servers.

Grooveshark users who are blocked from accessing the service directly may want to try out the Firefox add-on so that they can access the service again. Interested users can download Grooveshark Unlocker from the official Mozilla Add-ons repository.

Access Wikipedia Offline In Google Chrome
You may sometimes be in a position where you need to look up information but do not have Internet available at the moment. This can be during your daily commute or in a situation where an Internet connection is not available or working. We have reviewed several options in the past to get the majority of Wikipedia contents on your system locally to access the information without the need for an Internet connection. Check out WikiTaxi, OkaWix or Wikipedia School DVDs if you are interested in those methods.
The latest option has been exclusively designed for the Google Chrome web browser and therefor also Google’s Chromebook. The web application allows you to download nearly all textual contents from Wikipedia to make them available directly in the Chrome browser.
You are asked to either pick a 13 Megabyte dump of the most popular Wikipedia articles or the big database which weights in at about 1 Gigabyte. You can also select one of four available parsers which turn the Wikipedia information into HTML contents that are readable in the web browser.

Especially the large download make take a while, and you also need to make sure that you have enough disk space available for it.
Once installed you can use the following page to access your Wikipedia information offline in the Chrome browser. The developer suggests to bookmark the page for fast access.

It offers a search option, access to the program settings, access to the article index and an option to load a random article from the repository.
The search supports suggestions which are displayed automatically once you start typing in the first letter of your search term.
The articles are complete with the exception of media and the footnotes which are not displayed at all.
Search results are displayed almost instantly on modern computer systems.
Chrome users who would like their own personal Wikipedia copy on their computer can download and install the web app from the official Chrome web store. (via Chromestory)
