Opera 7.5 Mini for Android introduces new social Smart Page

If you are not using Google Chrome as your browser on your Android smartphone you may have at least looked at Opera’s offerings for the operating system. According to the statistics on Google Play, the browser has been installed on at least 10 million devices. Opera Mini 7.5 has just been released for Android phones running Android version 1.5 or higher introducing a new Smart Page and other features in the version.

You are probably wondering why Opera is making available two different browser versions, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. The main difference is how pages are rendered using the browser. Opera Mini uses Opera servers to render pages while Opera Mobile renders pages on the smartphone directly. This makes Opera Mini ideal if a smartphone’s hardware is not the fastest as it removes the time it takes before the pages are displayed on the screen.

Back to Opera Mini 7.5. Smart Page is a new social tab in the browser that taps right into popular social networking sites to keep you updated with the latest activities. The browser supports Facebook, Twitter and vKontakte, and once you have signed in on the browser you receive the latest updates right on the page without having to visit the sites directly.

Another addition is the My News section which displays news from a variety of sources based on your browsing habits or your preferences. Opera Mini furthermore displays link suggestions on the start page based “on the region your Android phone is located” in.

The speed dial feature is just a tab away in the browser, and since data gets compressed when you use Opera Mini, you benefit from faster browsing and reduced bandwidth usage, which is especially helpful for people who pay per Megabyte or with a plan that is only providing them with a low amount of free bandwidth per month.

Opera Mini 7.5 is available for download on Google Play.

Here is a video by Opera Software highlighting the new features of Opera Mini’s Smart Page feature.

Increasing Social Networking Diversity

A large majority of people in today's society feel the need to increase their network, and rightfully so. Some prefer the face-to-face form of networking, and most cities present numerous ways to do this. Chamber of Commerce events, Kiwanis and Toastmasters clubs, high-society events, and cultural performances such as the opera and theatre all provide networking opportunities. An attendee merely has to strike up a conversation while waiting in line or even seated before the start of the meeting or event to establish a connection with a total stranger.

Of course networking also takes place online daily. Websites such as Facebook and LinkedIn have allowed those intimidated by face to face networking to effectively increase their networks from the comfort of their office or home quite easily. Some people spend lots of time on these sites weekly or even daily and find great benefits from the time invested. Many times participation in a online discussion or group can lead quite naturally to a networking connection. Networking sites are usually fairly easy to navigate, and many have groups that answer frequently asked questions as to how to setup a profile and adjust privacy settings, drastically reducing the intimidation factor for some.

Volunteering for a local organization is another great way to increase your network. Meeting others with similar convictions while helping a good cause is without a doubt great use of a person's time. This can be a simple as participating in a 5K run for charity or spending time at an organization several times a month, and can result in lasting and meaningful connections with others.

You can also increase your network by talking to those you naturally interact with on a regular basis. Many times people rush from one obligation to another, ignoring those in their path and missing potentially beneficial connections. Stopping to talk with the people you may encounter dropping their child off at karate or gymnastics week after week may not be a bad idea. A simple conversation could eventually lead to a business deal or new career opportunity. All because the time was taken to initiate a conversation.

So who really needs to network Business owners network to increase exposure to their company. Entrepreneurs network to discuss ideas and strategies with like-minded individuals or seasoned business owners. Salespeople network to bring exposure to their company, and potentially commissions to their bank account. Those new to a city network to meet new friends. Job seekers network to find their next opportunity. Extroverts who live or work alone may network to simply feel energized in a crowd of people.

Attending networking events where you meet others face to face as well as connecting with others online can be beneficial to most people. After all, it can be all about who you know. So the next time a friend or colleague suggests attending a networking event or creating a profile on a popular social networking site, why not give it a try.

Networking has been very easy for Caitlin Beadles. Don't hesitate to check out her Keek page.

Websites Can See If You Are Logged Into A Social Networking Site

Can websites find out if you are logged into Facebook, Twitter or Google+? That’s what Tom Anthony wanted to find out. If third party websites could, it could be used for different purposes, from user tracking to optimizing the websites services for the networks the user is logged in.

Facebook for instance provides an API for that that developers can use to find out if users who are connecting to their website are currently logged into the social networking site.

For Twitter and Google+, Tom had to find a different way that was cross-browser compatible as the service’s Apis – or non existent API in the case of Google+ – did not allow to check a user’s log in status directly.

The idea again was very simple: Request a file on those sites that require the user to be logged in to view it. A basic example of a similar principle would be a link to the upload a file page on those networks. Users who request to open these pages see a login prompt first, before they see the actual page they requested.

Tom basically requested to see an image on both Twitter and Google+ after login. You can see the JavaScript code examples on his blog that should make the method clearer.

If you just want to see if the script can detect whether you are logged into Google+, Facebook or Twitter, visit the status detector page here.

log-in

The script works in all popular browsers, in particular Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer 7 and up, Safari and Opera.

The script that Tom posted is merely a tool, that can be used for legit purposes, for instance to only display social buttons for sites the user is logged in, or illegitimate purposes that breach a user’s privacy or target the user in malicious ways.

Users can protect themselves from being analyzed in this way by either logging out of the services when they leave the sites, or by installing browser extensions that block third party look-ups by default.

FBI Seeks Disasters Social App and Twitter Announces Censorship

The FBI is looking to develop an emergencies early warning system that works by “scraping” information in real time from social networks.  The US policing and intelligence bureau has asked contractors to suggest possible solutions and to come up with ways in which this might work.  In a post on the Federal Business Opportunities website called “Social Media Application” they say…

The Federal Bureau of Investigations is conducting market research to determine the capabilities of the IT industry to provide a social media application. The tool at a minimum should be able to meet the operational and analytical needs described in the attachment.

This is actually harder than it might appear.  On the face of it such a program would scour Twitter, Facebook and other websites for key words.  However disasters can never be predicted and, as such, determining the language people will use at the time is extremely difficult.  Even harder would be to determine where an event is taking place.

In theory such a program would also be able to highlight major crimes when people mention them online.  People have until February 7th to submit their ideas to the bureau.

In other Twitter news the company behind the hugely successful micro-blogging site has today announced that they have developed a way to selectively censor tweets on a country by country basis.  In it’s blog they said they could now “reactively withhold content from users in a specific country”.

It is curious as to why Twitter, a company that has always encouraged free speech, would make such a move.  Social networks were used extensively in the uprisings in Egypt and the middle-east last spring, and were widely hailed for helping protestors galvanise such huge crowds of support.

Having the ability to censor specific types of tweet in individual countries could potentially prevent this type of thing from ever occurring again.

As justification the company said “that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression” going on to cite France and Germany for banning pro-Nazi speech.

Anything that curtails freedom of speech online will not be welcomed by many people who believe the Internet simply should not be censored in any way, and it remains to be seen is there will be any negative impact on Twitter for enabling this feature.

Manage Social Site Notifications With Notification Control

You probably remember the My Permissions service which I reviewed about a week ago. It basically listed direct links to a dozen or so permission pages of social networking sites. Among the sites where some of the most popular sites on today’s Internet, including Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn or Dropbox.

The service offered little more than direct links though which users could bookmark in their web browsers to access the permission pages directly.

Notification Control, created by Ben Lang and Tim Kendall, has been inspired by My Permissions. The core difference is that Notification Control links to the notification pages of popular services on the Internet.

notification control

All you need to do is to click on one of the links to be taken directly to the notification page of the linked services. There you can then change if, when and how you are notified. You could for instance block all notifications to your email account if you do not want to receive notification emails anymore, or enable them again in case you’d like to receive emails again.

A total of 12 services are currently supported, among them Facebook, Twitter, eBay, FourSquare and Google+. Users benefit the most if they use more than one of the services, and chance is good that the average user does.

I’d still recommend to bookmark the notification control panel directly, or at least the general control panel of all sites so that you are able to access the pages directly and without intermediary page. Most users do not need to modify notification settings on a regular basis though.

What’s your take on My Permissions and Notification Control? Do they provide a useful service or is it not useful at all?

I’d say it is nice for users who want to quickly check on the notification or permission settings of said services, but that’s about it. (via Techdows)
