FilePro Helps You Analyze A Drive’s Space Distribution

Most computer users every now and then come into a situation where their hard drives start to run out of space. Sometimes it is easy to find out why. If you installed a big game for instance the other day you can be sure that it is now occupying lots of space on the computer’s hard drive. Sometimes though it may not be that obvious, and that’s where programs like FilePro come into play. It may for instance be the case that each save game requires Megabytes on the disk, and that the game’s auto save option has stored hundreds of save games on the computer.

These programs analyze the storage space distribution on hard drive partitions or folders to display the files and folders that occupy the most space on the PC.

The c: drive is selected by default when you start FilePro for the first time. You can change that to another hard drive partition or folder on the computer before you hit the Scan button to start the space distribution analysis.

The information are added to the program window in realtime as all folders and files of the computer are processed. The initial display is a tree structure map that displays folders based on their size in the program window. This way you can easily identify system folders like the Windows directory to concentrate on other folders of the system.

A left-click selects a folder, a double-click zooms in on that folder to display all the files and folders that are stored inside of it. Folder and file names become visible eventually which may be all that is needed to identify data that you can delete on the system to free up space. It is alternatively possible to zoom in our out with the mouse wheel.

A right-click on a file or folder opens a context menu with additional options. Here it is for instance possible to open the folder in Windows Explorer or the file in the default program viewer, delete or move a file or folder, or open a command prompt window from the selected location.

FilePro has three additional modes that you can make use of. TreeSize displays all folders sorted by size from largest to smallest in a tree sized view in the program window. Here it is only possible to open the containing folder or a command prompt window.

The Folder Statistics mode displays root folders and the space their files occupy in the selected location. The visibility threshold can be modified to display a deeper structure.

File Statistics finally displays the largest files on the system, with options to filter the results by filename, directory, size or date.

System snapshots can be saved, and compared at a later point in time. It is further possible to compare directories, and to use FilePro to locate duplicate files on the system.

Command line options are available to create snapshots without starting the graphical user interface.

FilePro is a free for personal use. The program supports Windows 7, and maybe previous versions of the operating system as well.

Increase Your Dropbox Space By 4.5 Gigabyte

We have talked about Dropbox’s new camera import feature previously which allows you to import photos from digital cameras that you connect directly to your PC to your Dropbox storage. This can be useful if you use Dropbox to store your photos anyway. Free users may run into space issues pretty soon though, as individual photos these days take up Megabytes of free space.

Dropbox is currently running a promotion that extends the available storage space for users who use the service’s photo import feature.

Storage space is increased in 500 Megabyte chunks by a maximum of 4.5 Gigabytes. For this to work, it is necessary to run the new Dropbox 1.3.12 client. This client is experimental and only linked at the Dropbox forum and not on the main site.

It is not clear if users will keep the additional storage space forever, or if it is only available in the beta period.

During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you’ll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total.

It is however likely that users will receive the space upgrade permanently.

To receive the update, users need to upload photos via the new photo import feature. If you do not have that many photos on your camera, you could simply shoot a lot of photos, connect your camera to Dropbox to get the additional 4.5 Gigabytes of online storage space.

Some users have reported that the feature is not available on their computer, even after installing the latest experimental Dropbox client. It is not clear why it is not there at this point, but there seems to be no option available to force it to appear. Dropbox also notes that photo import is currently not working under Linux or Apple Macintosh 10.4 systems.

The photo import feature relies on Autoplay, which needs to be enabled. This is done under Start Menu > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > AutoPlay in Windows 7.

If it works on your computer, you could use it to get an extra 4.5 Gigabyte of Dropbox storage. Not too shabby if you ask me.

Remove Old Chrome Versions To Save Disk Space

Back in the beginning of last year I ran a piece on how to free up disk space by removing older versions of the Chrome web browser. I started to investigate the issue after installing a Solid State Drive on my computer and noticing that it filled up rather quickly with auto-generated data. Turned out that Chrome was keeping old versions of the browser available in the Chrome directory. And while some users reported that only the last but one version was kept by Google Updater, multiple versions were kept by my Chrome installation.

This all in all turned out to waste more than 2 Gigabytes of space on my previous SSD which I could not use for other tasks instead.

Having to open the directory manually regularly is without doubt not the best way of handling the issue. Since Chrome is updating fairly regularly, you might have to check every month or so to delete unneeded versions of the browser from your hard drive.

Old Chrome Remover is a free program for the Windows operating system that can remove old versions of the Google Browser automatically from the system. It will automatically check for Chrome installations on the system when run and display all old version in a window afterwards.

The application supports not only Chrome Stable installations but also other Chrome installations including cutting edge Canary builds. Please note that it will display and offer to delete all old versions from the hard drive, with no option to manually select the versions you want deleted.

You need to press the Y key on the keyword to have the program delete all outdated Chrome installations on the system. If you do not want that you can press any other key to leave everything as is. You need to close all instances of the Chrome browser prior to deleting the old Chrome folders on the system. You will receive an access denied error message otherwise. The program needs to be run with elevated privileges under Vista and Windows 7.

Note that you should not run the tool if you have multiple Chrome channels installed on your system, as it will delete ALL old instances which means that you will end up with only one working version of Chrome (this happened on my system where I was running Dev and Canary builds of the browser. After running the tool, only the Canary build was still available, while the Dev build was not).

Old Chrome Remover is therefor only an option if you are running one version of Chrome on your system. Advanced users can use the /AUTO parameter to run the program silently.
