Switch To Firefox’s Old Default Image Style

If you have been running a recent version of the Firefox web browser on your computer you’ve probably noticed that the image viewer has changed considerably in recent time. A click on an image link in the browser displays the new image now centered on the screen with a black background. Veteran Firefox users know that the image previously was displayed on the regular browser background without being centered in the browser.

The new feature has seen heavy complaints from part of the Firefox user base. Users who did complain about it did not like the black background, and only to a lesser degree the centering of the image in the browser window. Some users noticed that the new style had issues displaying transparent images with a lot of alpha correctly in the browser. And while those may be minor issues, it is still not really clear why Mozilla did not add a switch, or an about:config parameter, to enable or disable the feature.

According to Bugzilla, the original request has been filed in 2007 to display images on a neutral background (and not white). Makes me wonder why dark gray or black has been selected, and not a neutral grayish background.

Especially the switching from a light-themed website to the black image background is something that a growing number of users feel is not pleasing to the eye.

Old Default Image Style is a Firefox add-on that returns the display of images to the way it has been in the browser. The images are again displayed on a white background in the upper left corner of the screen.

Firefox users who like the centering of images can enable that option in the add-on preferences. Here they can also change the default white background to another color. The background color input field supports both hex color values as well as HTML colors (so red and #cecece both work).

Especially the ability to change the color of the background comes in quite handy for Firefox users who do not want images displayed on a dark background in the browser. The extension itself is restartless, and changes to the background color are immediately visible on “direct” image tabs in the browser.

Switch Between Multiple Bookmark Bars In Google Chrome

If you are making use of the bookmarks bar in Google Chrome, you probably have noticed that it offers limited space for your important bookmarks and not the best manageability. While it is possible to remove bookmarks from the bar directly, or to add the current page as a new one, you won’t find options in the frontend to swap bookmarks around. For that, you need to open the Chrome bookmarks manager.

Bookmark bar switcher is a Chrome extension that enables multiple bookmark bars in the web browser. This allows you to switch between different sets of directly accessible bookmarks, useful for instance if you use the browser for work and home related tasks, or if you have that many important bookmarks that they do not fit on one bar.

The extension adds an icon to Chrome’s address bar. A left-click displays all bookmark bars that are available, as well as options to create a new bar, and to open the browser’s bookmarks manager.

bookmark bar

Only the default bookmark bar with all of its sites is listed there after installation. New bars are created easily from the extension’s context menu. All you need to enter is a name for the new bar, which will then become available as a blank bar in the browser.

You can switch between bars with a left-click on the icon and the selection of one of the available bars. Bookmarks can be added to each bar via drag and drop on the frontend, or in the bookmarks manager.

The bars are listed in a BookmarkBars folder in the bookmarks manager. Each bar is represented by its name for easy identification.

The extension has a few limitations that need to be mentioned here: It is not compatible with bookmark synchronizers, and supports only a limited number of bookmark moves before bookmarks cannot be moved anymore. This is due to Google Chrome’s limitation. A restart should fix the issue though according to the author.

An alternative would be the Chrome Bookmarks Manager which displays all bookmarks and a search option underneath an address bar icon.

Ebay.de To Switch To New Payment Processing System

A press release by eBay Germany indicates that the company plans to switch the site’s current payment processing system to a new one this summer. Ebay customers who purchase goods on the site will then make their payments directly to eBay, and not the seller of the product anymore. The system works similar to Amazon’s marketplace system where Amazon customers transfer the money for the purchased items to Amazon instead of the merchant directly. The only difference between both systems is that eBay will transfer the auction money in full to the item seller. Sellers will be charged with fees after the end of the transaction. Amazon on the other hand deducts fees directly from the sales of items.

The system works like an escrow system.

The buyer transfers the money for the item and the item’s shipping costs to eBay.eBay notifies the seller of the receipt of payment. The seller sends the item to the buyereBay transfers the money to the seller’s PayPal or bank account. The time of payment depends on a number of factors including the status of the account and the history.

Five different money transfer options will be supported by eBay on launch: Bank Transfer, Credit Card, Direct Debit, PayPal or Skrill (formerly Moneybookers).

The new payment processing system aims to strengthen the online transaction safety on the marketplace. Since customers will be paying eBay directly, it is less likely that they will get scammed by shady sellers on the site. Customers can get a refund if the item differs from the items they bought on the site, or if they do not receive the items at all. This money back guarantee covers all payment options, and not just PayPal. The inclusion of Skrill comes as a surprise, as it is a direct PayPal competitor.

About 500,000 eBay sellers have tested the new system on the German eBay marketplace. It is not clear yet if eBay plans to change the process on its other marketplaces as well.

What’s your take on the new system?

Microsoft’s Guide For Gmail Users To Switch To Hotmail

Google recently revealed the plan to merge the privacy policies and terms of service for most of the company’s products. This move gives all Google services direct access to all user data. Google search for instance can take into account what kind of emails a user gets in Gmail to personalize the search results based on that. This even goes further for Android phone users, who may now reveal their favorite restaurants, shops and locations to all other Google services.

A new post by Microsoft employee Dharmesh Mehta on the Inside Windows Live blog highlights core reasons why users might want to switch from Gmail to Hotmail, before explaining the actual steps that migrates their email account to the Hotmail email service.

Hotmail & Facebook work well together. You can update your Facebook status, chat with Facebook friends, view their updates, and comment right from your Hotmail inbox. You can’t do this from Gmail. You can easily share lots of photos and large attachments. Hotmail lets you share hundreds of photos or other files in one message using the integrated online storage from SkyDrive. You can’t do this in Gmail.Hotmail works great with Office. Using the Office Web Apps, Hotmail lets you view and edit Office docs for free right in your inbox. Gmail doesn’t work well with Office.Hotmail lets you get a handle on graymail. With customizable categories and scheduled sweeps, you can quickly clean up things like newsletters, social updates, and daily deals so you only see the mail that really matters to you. Gmail doesn’t have Sweep.

These features alone won’t convince many users to move their email account to Hotmail. Combined with Google’s announcement however they could be enough to get some users to move their accounts.

It needs to be noted though that Gmail offers features that Hotmail does not offer. This includes IMAP support or two step authentication, both of which are not supported by Hotmail.

The guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail lists three steps.

Create a Hotmail account. If you don’t already have one, you need to create a Hotmail account. The best way to do this is to get a new email address either @hotmail.com or @live.com. Or, if you already have an email address you want to keep using, you can keep using it and sign up here. You don’t have to use our domain.Import your old messages from Gmail. You’ll probably want to keep your old email and contacts so we’ve made it simple to bring them in. TrueSwitch is an easy tool which will import your email and contacts and forward any new email to Hotmail for 90 days. Go to the TrueSwitch site and follow the steps there. When you sign back in to Hotmail, you’ll notice that it’s beginning to import your emails (this could take a few hours if you have a lot of emails to bring over).Connect your Gmail account. This step is optional, but if you want to make sure you receive future messages from Gmail, you can have Hotmail automatically get all new emails that are sent to your old Gmail account. These are the steps to connect your accounts:
a. In your inbox, click Options and then More options.

b. Click Sending/receiving email from other accounts.

c. Click Add an email account.

d. Provide your Gmail account details.

Step 2 and 3 address core issues that users who move mail accounts want resolved before they even start thinking about it. Access to all previous mail messages and the forwarding of messages that are send to the old account are covered in those two steps.

Are you considering moving your Gmail account to another provider?
