Auto Refresh Select Tabs In The Firefox Web Browser
Have you ever been on a website where you waited for something to happen? Maybe it was on the Yahoo Mail website where you have been waiting for the registration confirmation email of a service that you just registered with, or you are on eBay waiting for the auction to end. If you are impatient, you may have tapped on the F5 key every few seconds to reload the page to see if anything has changed yet.
That’s fine and doable if you are waiting for one page to reload with the information you are looking for, but what if you are monitoring two auctions on eBay?
That’s where Auto Refresh for the Firefox web browser may help you out with. The free add-on allows you to refresh individual pages or groups of pages in select intervals.
A right-click on a page opens the context menu with the new Auto Refresh entry added to it. Here you can enable the automatic reloading of the current page, or all open tabs of the browser. You can select the reload interval here as well, ranging from every 2 seconds to once per hour. The interval can be randomized to make it look more natural.

The intervals can be edited in the add-on preferences to suite individual needs. You can furthermore switch from standard refresh to hard refresh. While not explained anywhere, it is likely that the latter bypasses the browser cache to request all information from the web server the page is hosted on again.
Auto Refresh adds an icon to the status bar which links to the add-on preferences and instructions on the developer website. This icon can be disabled in the preferences.
The Firefox extension can be quite useful for users who often encounter situations where they need to reload pages until information on these pages change. It can also be handy on news aggregators like Reddit or forums like 4Chan to keep up with new links and information posted on the sites.

Safe For Firefox Visualizes Secure Connections In The Browser
The Firefox web browser displays several indicators in the browser interface when you are connected to a secure website (using SSL). The first indicator is the https protocol in front of the web address instead of the http protocol. The second that the company, website or service name is displayed in front of the address, and that it is highlighted in color.
Firefox distinguishes between standard secure connections, and sites that use Extended Validation certificates. The former are highlighted in blue, while the latter in green in the browser. (see Visualize blue https sites in Firefox 3 in a better way)
If you do not pay attention to the address bar though, you may not realize if you are on a secure page or not. This can for instance be the case if you have opened the service or page with a click on a link or from the bookmarks, instead of having entered it manually in the browser.
The Safe extension for the Firefox web browser makes SSL and extended SSL connections more visible in the browser. The add-on adds two new indicators. It first paints a green or blue border around the page, which indicates that the connection to the site is secure. Some users may find the border to be a bit on the thick site. The options offer a setting to reduce the border’s thickness.
The second indicator is the site’s tab in the Firefox tabbar. It is also painted in blue or green to indicate the secure connection. What makes this special is the fact that you can now see which of the sites you have open in the browser are making use of SSL or extended SSL, and which are not.

You can configure the program to display a notification if sign in forms are submitting passwords insecurely. According to the add-on description on Mozilla, it will furthermore detect if a website is “using a secure method to handle form submissions”. This is indicated in the statusbar when “a user hovers over a button”. This feature did not work properly during tests.
Safe improves the visibility of secure sites in the browser. Too bad that the secure form indicator is not working properly currently.

How To Reset Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Browser
If Internet Explorer is your default web browser, or if you are sometimes using the browser on your system, you may come into a situation where the browser is not working properly anymore. It may crash on you for instance, or system settings appear so broken that you cannot fix them by yourself. The latter can happen if your system was compromised by a virus, or if someone used tweaking software to modify Internet Explorer settings.
If you have updated Internet Explorer to a new version on your system, for instance to IE9 on Windows 7, you could try and uninstall Internet Explorer. If you are running the default version, for instance Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, you do not have that option.
Microsoft has created a Fix-It, a small portable program, to reset Internet Explorer settings on Windows systems the script is executed on.
All you need to do is launch the program after you have downloaded it to your system. Follow the instructions until you come to the following screen.

The Reset Internet Explorer Settings Fix It will automatically reset the following:
Disable Toolbars and add-onsDefault web browser settingsPrivacy settingsSecurity settingsAdvanced optionsTabbed browser settingsPop-up settingsIt is furthermore possible to delete personal settings, they include:
Resets home pages, search providers and Accelerators to default settings.Deletes temporary Internet files, history, cookies, web form information, ActiveX Filtering and Tracking Protection data, and passwords.A click on the reset button runs the process in the background. It should not take longer than twenty seconds before everything has been reset to factory defaults. Keep in mind though that you need to restart Internet Explorer before you see the changes take effect.
If you have selected to delete personal settings as well, you will see the welcome screen when you start Internet Explorer for the first time.
Internet Explorer users can alternatively reset the Internet browser without the Fix-It script. The easiest way to perform this operation is to use Windows-r to bring up the run box on the system, and load inetcpl.cpl from there. This brings up the Internet Properties.
Switch to the Advanced tab and locate the Reset button at the bottom of the page. All Internet Explorer windows need to be closed before you can use the feature. The reset button will display the same reset options as the Fix-It.
Resetting Internet Explorer can be useful in situations where you are experiencing issues that you can manually fix anymore.

How To Verify That A Browser Extension Is Not Phoning Home
Extensions are little helper programs that make life on the Internet a tad more comfortable for the user. Some change the way we access information on the Internet, others add extra features and functionality to a website, and others help you stay safe and secure online. Most Internet users who use extensions never bother to look at the extension’s source code to verify that it is only doing what it is supposed to do, and nothing else.
The official extension repositories verify extensions before they are made available for public download. And while that often works well, we have seen extensions slip through that verification process in the past.
This guide looks at one of the ways that normal Internet users have to verify that their extensions are not phoning home. Phoning home in this context means communicating with sites that they should not communicate with in first place.
Here is what we need: Fiddler, a web debugger that you need to install on your system. Please note that Fiddler is only available for the Windows operating system, and that it requires the Microsoft .Net Framework.
Once you have installed Fiddler start it up. You see all http connections that your system makes in the left column. Listed here are the return code, the requested host and url on the host, and the process responsible for making that connection.
I suggest you close down all applications besides the web browser that you want to check up on. For new extensions that you are not sure about, you may want to consider creating a blank profile containing no user related data. I also suggest to start with a blank browser, that is a browser with no open websites. This ensures that you won’t get overwhelmed by dozens or even hundreds of initial connections the browser makes on startup.
Wait a few seconds and you should see that the list is being populated by all connections the browser makes shortly after it has been launched. In the example below, you can see that the browser connects to the pinterest.com website, which I could link to one of the installed extensions quite easily.

It can happen that you do not know which extension is trying to connect to the host. If that is the case, disable all browser extensions but one and check if it is responsible for making the connections. Repeat the process until you find the responsible extension.
A few things need to be considered at this point. You first need to find out if the connection that is being made is legit or not. Since you see the host name the connection is made to, it is a good start to check up on that host name. A good starting point is the url verification module of Virus Total. Just enter the host name in there and see what the connected scan engines return.

You can naturally check other services as well, Web of Trust for instance, or run a search for the host name in your favorite search engine.
The second thing you may want to consider is that some extensions may not make a connection when the browser starts. You may want to browse to a few sites and use the browser for some time to see if any of the installed extensions make connections some time after the browser has been started.
Fiddler can also be helpful for other purposes. The Pinterest extension that made the initial connection to the site during browser start? It did try to connect to the site every five seconds ever since, which means it was using system resources.
This may look like overkill to users who analyze the source code of extensions instead. And that is true, but it may also be the only way to find out for users who cannot analyze the code directly. It might pay off though to check if your browser is making connections to sites that you did not request.

Make The Most Out Of Pinterest With These Browser Add-ons
Web browser add-ons can improve your Pinterest experience significantly. Let me give you a quick overview of what the service is about. Pinterest lets you pin photos and videos to online pinboards. These are publicly accessible, and all Pinterest users can comment on them, share them or pin them to their pinboards as well. Links to the original site the photos or videos were found on are retained, which makes it a visual bookmarking service as well.
There are three options to pin photos or videos to your own pinboard. You can use the bookmarklet and run it on the page that contains the photo or image, paste the web address of the page on the Pinterest site into a form, or pin an item that has been posted by another Pinterest user.
When you look at browser extensions, you will notice that Google Chrome got the bulk of it, while both Firefox and Opera only one each. Lets take a look at the add-ons:
Pin It Buttons – Instead of having to use the bookmarklet, these extensions add a button to the browser that you can click on to pin a photo or video on that website. Chrome: One Click Pinterest Button, Opera: Pinterextension

Right-click Pinning – These add a right-click context menu option to pin the selected item to one of your Pinterest pinboards. Chrome: Pinterest Right click, Firefox: Unofficial Pinterest Addon

Keyboard shortcuts – Adds a shortcut to pin items on a page with a keyboard shortcut. Chrome: Pin It!
Image Zooming – Lets you zoom in on images right on the Pinterest website without having to click on the item. Works similar to Hover Zoom. Chrome: Pinterest Zoom
, Pinterest Image Expander, Pinzy

Pin Screenshots – Lets you pin screenshots of web pages that you are currently on, or upload photos from your desktop to pin those. Chrome: Screen 2 Pin

Closing Words It is interesting to note that there is no userscript, and only one Firefox add-on available for a popular service such as Pinterest. Google Chrome on the other hand has been blessed with extensions in comparisons. Is it because many developers are using that browser now? What’s your opinion here? Also, let me know if you come across other add-ons for Pinterest. And if you are not currently a user, you can grab your Pinterest invites here.

Google Cache Browser Lets You Browse A Website In Google’s Cache
When you search Google you always have the option to open a linked website directly, or to open a cached page of the selected page instead. Opening the cached version may help you if the website that you want to open is not available temporarily or permanently.
Google recently made changes to the location of the cached links on the search results pages. One of the issues that you may have is that you can only open the Google search results link in the cache. All other links on the site do not link to the cached version. That’s a problem if the entire site is down and you need to open multiple pages on it to retrieve the information you are looking for.

This leaves you with two options. You can copy the original link, paste it into Google Search and open the cached page this way, or modify the webcache url manually. Both options are not really that comfortable, especially if you need to open several pages and not only one.
The free userscript Google Cache Browser automates the process by converting all links on a cached page automatically. This happens behind the scenes and should not have a visual impact on the page rendering time or performance.
When you hover your mouse over a link on a Google cached page, you will notice that it too links to Google Cache and not the original website it was posted on.

The userscript modifies both internal and external links so that they are pointing to their Google Cache location instead.
The userscript can be useful in a number of ways. It first and foremost provides better and direct access to all cached pages of a website. It can also be helpful if you are experiencing connection issues or slow loading pages on a particular website. Connecting to the cached page instead may speed up access significantly.
Google Cache Browser is available on the userscripts website. It has been tested in Firefox with the Scriptish add-on installed. It is likely also compatible with Greasemonkey and Google Chrome, and maybe other browsers like Opera as well.

Unified Browser and Windows History Viewer
Keeping track of all your history items can be quite the feat if you are using more than one browser. Privacy conscious users usually delete the information regularly, while the majority of users is likely unaware what their web browser and operating system can reveal about them.
History Viewer is a free program for the Windows operating system that reveals what the three browsers Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer, and the Windows operating system, have recorded.
When you first start the program you will notice that entries are divided into four groups in the left side bar. The main area is empty until you click on one of the entries in the sidebar.

Lets take a closer look at each group and the history information it offers:
Internet Explorer: Displays the url history, text that has been entered into the browser’s address bar, web cookies as well as the contents of the index.dat file.Firefox: Lists the url, input and form history, as well as cookies and downloads.Google Chrome: Displays the url history, top visited sites, keyword searches, cookies and downloads.Microsoft Windows: All recent documents that have been opened, the search, run, open and save, and list visited history, the usb storage device history, first folder information and typed paths. The listings can reveal plenty of information, for instance which websites have been visited, what the user has been searching for on the Internet, which devices have been plugged into the computer in the past and which files have been downloaded to the local computer.
The program can create a report of its findings which is saved as a plain HTML file on the system. There are no options to delete individual entries or all entries. For that, I suggest to run a program like the free CCleaner which can take care of most of the entries that you see. Keep History Viewer open, run CCleaner and check back in the program if the listings have been removed. You do need to close all supported web browsers if they are running on the system.
History Viewer is compatible with all versions of the Microsoft operating system starting with Windows 98. (via Instant Fundas)

Copy Images That You Have Viewed In Your Browser To Your Hard Drive
One of the things that a browser does when you open a web page is to move downloaded page items into the browser cache. Elements can be all kinds of things, from the HTML page itself to media like images or videos. Some users may wonder why browsers make use of a cache, and the main answer for that is speed and bandwidth. When you reconnect to the web page at a later time, your browser will first look into the cache if elements have already been downloaded. If that is the case, they are loaded from the computer’s hard drive which speeds up the rendering of the website and saves bandwidth that can then be used for other tasks.
And since they are already available on your computer, you can move them from the cache directory from where they will be deleted eventually, to another directory on your computer. That’s handy for instance if you have been browsing photos or wallpapers lately and want some of them saved permanently on your computer.
Browsing the cache manually is not such a pleasant experience on the other hand, as you usually cannot link file names to sites or contents.
The free software Cache Copy changes this by allowing you to move images out of the Firefox or Chrome cache automatically.

When you first start the program you see that the default browser and profile have been selected automatically. You can switch to another cache folder if you want to move images that you have seen in another browser. The program works in all folders, which means that you can also use it to copy images out of regular folders on your computer.
All that’s left then is to select a target folder for the images, and look at the parameters to adjust them to your needs.
Include images up to makes sure that only new images are copied and not all images.Include images larger than copies images even if their file size is larger than the selected size. The last entry does the same but only resolution wise. You can change or disable the parameters if needed. You can download Cache Copy from the developer website. The program requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0.
Nirsoft has released comparable programs. Video Cache View looks for videos in the browser cache, Firefox Download View and Chrome Download View for browser specific solutions, and Website Sniffer for a realtime application.

hisNoise For Chrome, Pink, Brown and White Noise in Your Browser
I prefer a near silent environment when I’m working on the computer. This is especially the case when I’m writing articles or researching things that I may write about. With noise being a part of everyone’s life, it is often not that easy to stay concentrated. I often get distracted by noise in the house and on the street. This can be the fridge that is to loud or a group of school kids walking by.
Some of my friends do not mind at all, and noise usually does not distract them a bit. Others play loud music to avoid distracting noise.
I on the other hand prefer to use background noise for that as it is less distracting than the newest Lady Gaga song. So called white, pink or brown noise reduces or eliminates the impact of other environmental noise in the vicinity.
I have reviewed a White Noise application for the Google Chrome web browser before. HisNoise takes the concept a step further by integrating five different types of background noises into the browser.
Next to pink, brown and white noise, it also makes available thunderstorm and beach waves soundscapes. The extension adds an icon to Chrome’s address bar upon installation. A click on the icon opens the selection menu.

A click on one of the five button plays the selected background sound in an endless loop on the system. This only stops when you click on the stop button in the interface or close the Google Chrome web browser.
The slider in the extension interface changes the volume of the sound. It is suggested to turn it down first before starting to play one of the songs, as it may be to loud otherwise.
The extension icon changes its color to blue when one of the sounds is playing in the browser.
Google Chrome users can download and install hisNoise from the official Chrome Web Store.
