Making An Impression With Photo Gift Ideas

Sometimes it's hard to gift shop for people you care about. Of course, it's easier when you're dealing with someone who's really vocal about what they want, but you don't always get lucky like that. The best gifts are those that actually mean something to people, which is why these great photo gift ideas will ensure that your recipient cherishes your good intentions and relationship for years to come.

Photo Collage Table

One of the coolest photo gift ideas you can create on your own is a collage. People love seeing their memories displayed on a wide canvas that covers the events and experiences they really value all at once. The only problem is that collages often go against the flow of decor people like, especially if they're prone to changing things around every few months.

The collage table is a great solution, especially for work desks and other functional furniture. It consists of a regular collage with the front sides of the images glued or double-sided taped to a sheet of clear plexiglass or acrylic plastic. This creates a collage that can also serve as a durable table cover or a portable lap desk, depending on its size. Rubber bumpers applied to the undersides of the corners ensure that the collage won't slide as people work on it and that they can easily insert more photos to broaden their collection. As long as there are no sharp edges, this is also a great gift for kids.

Self Portrait T-Shirt

Custom T-shirt printing has come a long way since its inception, and T-shirts with huge pictures of the recipient's face make great one-off gag gifts. Of course, some people are self-confident enough to appreciate these gifts solely for their aesthetic value, but they're really great for boosting the self-confidence of teens and shy people. One of the nice features of this kind of gift is that you can easily add text to a photo on the computer and give your recipient a shirt depicting them uttering their favorite cool catch phrase.

Frameless Photo

One of the coolest recent technological innovations in the world of photo gifts is the frameless photo. Printed right onto a sheet of smooth glass, these photos make an instant statement hanging on a wall as if they always belonged there. The fact that they're printed on glass means that you can either have them backed with safety foam or left open to the light for a natural back-lit or stained glass effect.

Traditional Scrapbooking

Photo scrapbooks are often overlooked, but they make really nice gifts for people of all ages. This is especially true at graduation time and following the other kinds of big life transitions that people go through like having children or retiring. Albums and scrapbooks also offer an opportunity for heartfelt personalized customization that really increases their sentimental value in the eyes of the recipient.

Digital Media

Of course, if you're really good with photo editing software, but not that great at budgeting, you can always create a fun montage on the computer for free. Sometimes it doesn't take much to please people as long as they know you care. If you find an app that lets you make your photo collection into a smartphone-ready wallpaper or slide show, you'll definitely make the recipient happy.

David Sheath is greatly experienced in the photo gifts industry. If you need to design a customized gift his store can certainly help. His website http://www.photogiftsmall.com offers more than 400 fully customizable products that can be easily personalized with your own photos, logos, designs and text.

Flickr: List all Photo Sizes directly

If you want to view a photo on the popular photo hosting site Flickr in its original size, you need to click your way through a number of pages before you finally reach the page where available photo resolutions can be selected. It takes two clicks from the original photo page on Flickr to get to the page listing all the photos, and another click to display the photo in the selected size on the website.

The Show All Sizes userscript for Flickr reduces the clicks to one. Once you have installed the userscript in your web browser, you will notice that it is automatically adding all available photo sizes to individual photo pages on Flickr.

flickr photo sizes

These link directly to all available sizes that the photographer or uploader has made available on Flickr. A click on one of the resolutions that are displayed underneath the photo loads the image itself in the browser. The numbers that you see listed there are the width of the image, with the height not being displayed at all.

The script is useful for Flickr users who would like to view the image in a different resolution on Flickr without clicking through to do just that. It is obviously also great for users who would like to use a photo on Flickr as their new desktop background image. Make sure you look at the license information before you download and use it for a purpose though.

The Show All Sizes userscript has been tested running the Firefox web browser with Greasemonkey installed. When I tried to install the userscript in Chrome I got a strange error message:

Install Failure: Extensions, apps and user scripts cannot be installed from this web site.

install failure

It appears as if the userscripts website has been blocked in the Chrome web browser. Can anyone confirm that?

Show All Sizes is a useful userscript for Flickr regulars who wish to optimize their workflow on the photo hosting site.

Create Stunning Photo Slideshows With IMGDissolver

If you ever wanted to create a stunning photo slideshow for your own personal use or for distribution, you’d probably discovered that it can be quite difficulty to find the right program for the job. We have covered slideshow creators like Wow Slider for instance in the past.

IMGDissolver has been released in an early alpha version, and while that early stage of development shines through somewhat when using the software, you’d be surprised at the functionality that is already integrated.

You can not only add photo formats but also video formats to your slideshow in the main tab of the application. A click on Add Images opens a file browser that you can use to add supported formats. Next to standard image formats such as jpg, png and gif, it also supports popular video formats like mpg, avi, mov or ogg.

img dissolver

The same configuration screen offers options to change the brightness, contrast, saturation or gamma, and red, green and blue values. A click on Effects furthermore displays effects like sepia, blur or gray scale that you can apply to individual positions.

You can add music to the slideshow under the Music tab. Just browse to an mp3 file on your computer and click the add button to have it play in the background while the slideshow is displayed on the screen.

Transition effects are applied under settings. Here you can select nice looking effects like mosaic, door or fall down, as well as background colors, the duration each image is displayed and filters that are applied to all photos.

The program ships with audio and video tools that you can use to merge or concatenate audio files, or to cut videos. This is nice for quick last minute editing.

You can play the slideshow right on the computer, save it in the program’s own format to play or edit it at a later time, or convert the slideshow to divx or DVD compatible formats. The former generates an avi file that you can play in all media players that play avi files, the latter saves the slideshow as an ISO image that you can burn to DVD.

This can then be played back on the television and compatible video DVD players. As far as the avi goes, you can select a resolution that you want the video to be in. Available resolutions range from 320×240 to 800×576. There is unfortunately no option to save photo slideshows in larger resolutions.

The only negative is that it sometimes loads slowly. It took about ten seconds for the program window to show up after start, and maybe five or so seconds to switch between some program menus. It is likely that the developer will resolve those issues in future versions.

It takes minutes to create great looking photo slideshows with IMGDissolver. The option to save them as avi or DVD compatible files ensures that they can be played on nearly every system. Great program, highly recommended.
