Automatically use HTML5 players on Amazon, YouTube and Vimeo in Chrome
While there are still many media sites on the Internet that only provide access to their contents via a Flash-based player, there are some that make their contents available both in a Flash version and a HTML5 version. Google’s video hosting platform YouTube for instance offers a HTML5 Beta option for some time now that users can join to watch the majority of videos on the site using a HTML5 player.
Why you’d want to use the HTML5 player and not the Flash-based player? The two core reasons for that are security and stability. Flash vulnerabilities are common and even if you are running Google Chrome with its auto-updating native Flash technology, you can still be vulnerable for the time it takes Google to implement the updates to fix the vulnerability. And Flash Player is also known for causing all kinds of stability issues, including freezes or even crashes of the browser.
It is certainly not the case that all users are experiencing those issues, but if you do, you probably would like to resolve those issues for a better web browsing experience.
If you use Flash exclusively on YouTube, Amazon or Vimeo, you may want to take a look at the HTML5ify extension for the web browser as it is automatically enabling the HTML5 player on those sites. You can then go ahead and disable Flash in Chrome, by loading chrome://plugins and clicking on disable next to the Flash Player listing there. While you are there, make sure to disable all the other plugins that you may see there as the majority of them are likely not needed at all.

You may receive warning messages that you need Adobe Flash Player to play the contents. Amazon for instance displays those. You can however still click on the play button next to mp3 songs to preview them using HTML5 on the site without issues.
Please note that some YouTube videos won’t work. This seems to be especially true for videos that have been uploaded recently to the site as conversions may take a while before they are completed.
HTML5ify works really well otherwise. If you only use one or multiple of the supported sites you can use it to replace Flash in Google Chrome. If you use more sites then this is unfortunately not really a solution. The author should consider adding support for popular media sites to improve the reach of the extension.

YouTube Black Theme, A Dark-Style for YouTube
Not every YouTube visitor loves the new layout and design of the popular video hosting website. You may remember that the design has been changed not long ago, moving subscriptions and channels more into the focus on the start page, along with a big flashy ad at the top of the page.
While it was possible back then to restore the old layout of the site, it does not seem possible anymore. The next best thing is to make the best out of the new homepage. You can do that with a bunch of userscripts to improve the functionality on the site, or styles that change the design and layout.
I have for instance reviewed userscripts and browser extension to return the inbox to the frontpage, skip ads on YouTube or hide watched videos on the site.
If you are not a fan of the light design, and liked the earth hour design that YouTube had for some time, then you may like the YouTube Black Theme that you can install as a dark-style for the site.
Here are two screenshots how this theme looks like on the YouTube website. First the frontpage where a darker background has taken over except for the middle part of the site that is listing recent subscription activities.

The second screenshot shows a video page. Unlike on the frontpage, where parts remained in lighter colors, everything has been turned into darker shades on this page.

The theme is provided as a userscript that needs to be installed into the web browser of choice. I was able to test the userscript both in the Firefox web browser with the Greasemonkey extension installed, and the Google Chrome browser. It worked identical in both browsers, and it is likely that it will work in other browsers, like Opera, as well.
Firefox users need to install Greasemonkey first, before they head over to the userscript website to install the script in their browser. Once done, any new page load on YouTube or a new visit to the site will feature the new dark layout. If you prefer to turn off the black theme again you can simply uninstall or disable the userscript to do so.
Changing the style to a darker theme does not change the site’s functionality in any way. It is purely an aesthetic choice.

YouTube AdsFree For Opera Removes Advertisement On YouTube
Google in recent years has started to add advertisement to the popular video hosting platform YouTube. Ads on YouTube nowadays come in a variety of ways, from sponsored channels to banner ads or in-video advertisement. The video hosting site currently supports two different kinds of in-video ads. First a video ad before the actual video requested by the user, and then ad overlays when the requested video is playing on the screen.
These ads either benefit YouTube and Google completely, or if revenue sharing is enabled, the original uploader of the video as well.
A percentage of the site’s user base may prefer to bypass ads to fully enjoy the contents without overlay images being displayed to them while the video is playing.
YouTube AdsFree is an Opera extension that removes the majority of ads on YouTube. The latest version of the extension blocks the ad servers so that the ads cannot be displayed anymore on the screen. The description lists popup ads as the main ad form that gets blocked. These are the overlay ads when you start watching the videos.

The extension furthermore blocks full window ads and promoted ads on YouTube and on websites who have embedded the videos. There is also an option available to remove branded banners, for instance on the VEVO channel, from being displayed on YouTube.
It is not really clear if the ad blocker covers 100% of ads, or if some ad forms remain on the site. While I personally have not seen any video ads before the actual video, it could be that these ads are still shown on YouTube.
Opera users who would like to try out YouTube AdsFree can install the latest version of the extension on the Opera Extensions website.
If you are not using Opera as your main browser, you may be interested in this guide that explains how to skip ads on YouTube.

YTubePlayer Is A Desktop Youtube Player
Youtube desktop players offer an alternative to opening the YouTube website in a web browser. There are surprisingly few applications available that let you play YouTube videos on the desktop. Miro comes to mind but that application is not lightweight by any means.
YTubePlayer is a desktop Youtube player that comes with most of the bells and whistles that you would expect. The program does rely on Internet Explorer’s Flash plugin which without doubt can be a issue for many users who prefer not to install that plugin on their system. A fall back to HTML5 is not provided.
The player interface is minimalistic in design. You see a controls bar at the top, the player window on the left, and the search, playlist and video listings on the right.

You can start searching for videos right away by entering a search term into the form at the top. This opens a new window with search results that list the title, description, play time, views and thumbnail of each video result.

Videos are sorted by relevance by default, with options to sort them by rating, view count or publication date instead.
A click on the title sends it directly to the player were it plays automatically. You can use the controls at the top to pause and stop videos, and to switch to the next or previous video if you have selected a playlist.
Videos can be added to playlists, of which you can create as many as you want. Each playlist contains a feed of videos that have been added to it.
You can change the size of the window, and of the video player and playlist listing individually. That’s useful if you only want the player window visible on the screen to save screen estate.
The application has a fullscreen mode, and a toolbar mode. The latter displays only the toolbar and no video player or interface, which makes it great for music, and not workable at all for videos that you want to watch.
The application supports most multimedia keyboards so that you can control videos in the program window with your keyboard’s media keys. It also offers an option to import existing YouTube playlists, and to share playlists to other users of the desktop player.
The player comes without options to download YouTube videos. YTubePlayer is available for Windows and Mac operating systems.

Hide Watched or Bland Videos On YouTube
If you are a regular on the video hosting site YouTube, you might feel that the site is missing options to hide or remove videos. This can be interesting for subscription videos that you have no interest in or that you have already watched. YouTube offers no controls to remove watched or bland videos from your list of subscriptions, or the new channel listing on your start page.
The userscript YouTube Tweak changes this by adding delete buttons to those listings so that you can remove videos from the listing to hide them from view. Once you have installed the userscript, you will notice that it automatically adds delete icons to each video on the YouTube start page.

The icons are only added to the start page, and the subscriptions and channels displayed there. They are not displayed when you search. A click on the icon removes the video instantly from the listing and hides it from view permanently, or at least until you disable the userscript’s functionality either by hotkey or by disabling it.
The userscript furthermore removes videos from the listings automatically after you have watched them on YouTube. That’s useful for YouTube users who like to delete videos from view when they have been watched once.
The developer has added a fallback option, as you could not watch videos multiple times otherwise with the userscript enabled in the background.
Two keyboard shortcuts were added to unhide the removed videos on YouTube again. You can disable the automatic removal of watched videos on Youtube with the Alt-1 hotkey, and the hiding of removed videos with the Alt-2 key. The keys can also be used to re-enable the feature. You may need to reload the page before the changes take effect.
Google Chrome users can install the userscript straight away in their browser. Firefox users need to install the Greasemonkey or Scriptish extension first before they can do the same. (via A Tech Girl’s Life)

YouTube Search History Now With Disable Option
The popular video hosting site YouTube up until now kept a log of all of the videos that you watched on the site while logged in to your YouTube or Google account. YouTube knows about all the videos that you watched on the site while logged in to the account. The feature’s name could cause some confusion on its own, as it has little to do with searches on the site. Thus, viewing history would be more appropriate.
While it was possible to remove individual video or the complete list of all videos that you watched on YouTube, up until now it was not possible to disable the feature to have the site not record any activities in the first place.
This was a big issue for privacy conscious users who did not want their video history to be recorded at all. It could also be problematic on multi-user PCs that shared a single Google account, or where users sometimes forgot to log out of theirs.
Ghacks reader Odio just notified me that YouTube – finally – had added an option to disable the search history feature on the site. Google calls it pausing, but it effectively stops to record which videos you viewed on the site.
To disable My Search History, go to this settings page on YouTube. Please note that you need to be logged in for this to work properly. The page lists all the videos that you watched on the site in the past.
Locate the pause search history button at the top and click on it to disable the logging of videos that you watch on YouTube.

The button switches to Resume search history automatically which you can activate to have the viewing history recorded again. You may also want to click on the Clear all search history button to remove your existing search history records from the site.
I suggest you test the new feature by loading a video on the site, and then reloading the search history page to make sure nothing gets recorded anymore.

YouTube Browse, Video Editor And Manager Updated
While closing some of the company’s lesser popular services, Google’s popular services such as Google+ or YouTube have received plenty of updates in the past. Google today announced that they have updated YouTube’s browse, video editor and video manager pages. Channels have moved into the focus on YouTube with recent updates, and the new browse pages reflects that. According to Google the updated page helps users “find even more great Channels on YouTube”.
The new browse page on YouTube divides contents into categories on the left side. You can now browse categories like gaming, science and technology, or sports more easily. Each page displays the most viewed videos at the top followed by popular videos and select channels

Here is is then possible to click on a specific video to watch that video on YouTube, or on a channel name to open that channel on the website. YouTube users and companies listed on the pages should benefit highly from the new exposure.
YouTube has improved the capabilities and look and feel of the site’s video editor. The video editor has received a visual overhaul, a “cool new timeline, easier clip trimming and a moving playhead”.

One interesting feature that is now available is the ability to join multiple uploaded videos into one. This is done by dragging and dropping the videos on the timeline. The video editor is a useful tool for basic or last minute video editing. On the downside, it does not come close to the functionality that desktop applications like VirtualDub provide.
Last December’s update of the Video Manager did not play well with many YouTube content producers. The new video manager resolves some of the issues that users had with the update. Likes and dislike statistics have for instance been re-added to the manager interface. Sorting videos by popularity has also returned.
The video manager furthermore has received a visual update, an improved “display of scheduled uploads and claimed videos”, and a search history.
You can read the announcement over at the official YouTube blog.

How To Skip Ads On YouTube
Depending on the videos that you like to watch on YouTube, you may be seeing way more video ads than a year or two ago. With YouTube finally taking off revenue wise, users are seeing more video ads before the actual videos that they want to watch on the site.
While it is understandable that Google wants to earn money from the service, it is also understandable that some users may be fed up with the video ads that they are forced to watch. This is especially true if the same video ad is showing up on multiple videos that you watch on YouTube.
Some videos can be skipped after five seconds of play, while others cannot be skipped at all.

Most users do not mind the occasional ad as they very well know that it costs a lot to operate a site like YouTube. If you have to endure video ads on YouTube constantly though, you may be inclined to look for a way to bypass those ads to improve your experience on the site.
The Google Chrome extension Skip Ads On YouTube does exactly that. It is a manual solution though and not automatic. The extension adds a blue play button to the YouTube video page. A click on the button skips any video ad that is playing at that moment and goes right to the hosted video.
The downside to this operation is that you have to click on the button every time you want to skip a video ad on the site. It also needs to be noted that it only works on YouTube directly, and not on third party sites.
The developer has made available a paid version of the extension that can skip ads on YouTube automatically. It is available for $4.
Google Chrome users can download and install Skip ads on YouTube from the official Chrome web store.
Several alternatives are available:

Display The Inbox On The YouTube Frontpage
With YouTube’s redesign now live on the site and with no turning back opportunity anymore, it is time to realize that the changes have not all be for the better. If you are not logged in or an active YouTube user you can probably live with the new frontpage design and all, but if you are an active user who gets lots of messages and stuff you’d probably like a way to reach those messages more easily.
You see, YouTube made the decision to move the easily accessible inbox from the front page behind the account name in the top right corner of the screen. To reach the YouTube inbox, you need to first click on the name and then on Inbox to be taken there. Once there you still may need to select a different entry, e.g. comments instead of personal messages which means yet another click before you land there.
The free userscript YouTube startpage inbox changes this by adding the inbox and all of its links back to YouTube’s homepage.

Once installed, you will see direct links to all inbox entries on the homepage again. The script adds them to the right sisdebar just above the recommended video section there. The links point to personal messages, shared with you, comments, contact suggestions and video responses. Each entry lists the number of unread messages which makes the feature that more convenient as you can now see directly if you have new messages or notifications waiting for you in your inbox.
The inbox at the top lists the total of unread messages and notifications.
Please note that the inbox is only displayed on the frontpage and not on other pages of YouTube.
The script has been tested in the Firefox web browser with the Scriptish extension. It likely works in other browsers such as Google Chrome as well.
