Display Realtime Currency Exchange Rates In Firefox

Having currency exchange rates displayed in your web browser can be useful in several situations. Maybe you prefer to buy some goods overseas and want the exchange rate right in your browser to make a rough product price calculation. Or you are trading on the foreign exchange market and want to make sure that you have the latest currency exchange rates displayed at all times in the browser. It can also be handy if you are planning your next out-of-country trip and need to convert currencies to get a better feeling for prices in the other country.

The Firefox add-on Dcurrency displays exchange rates of up to three currencies or metals in the Firefox status bar. It will automatically display three different currencies in the status bar upon installation. Each currency can be swapped for another one with a right-click.

The first currency on display is the reference currency which is always listed with a value of 1. The two remaining currencies or metals are then displayed with their exchange rate.

The program can display rates for six metals: Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Palladium, Platnium and Silver. These are displayed in the same fashion as currencies.

Yahoo Finance is used by the extension by default, with options to switch to Google Finance instead if that’s the preferred service. Rates are updated once every 15 minutes, with options to reduce the interval to one minute. It is however possible to update the exchange rate directly with a left-click.

One handy tool is the converter mode which you can enable in the extension options. This replaces the value of the reference currency with a form to enable currency conversions right in the Firefox status bar.

The add-on can display exchange rate graphs which visualize exchange rates over time.

Especially the option to look up exchange rates right from the status bar can be useful for Firefox users who sometimes need to make those currency conversions.

Firefox users can download and install Dcurrency from the official Mozilla Firefox add-ons repository.

Display The Inbox On The YouTube Frontpage

With YouTube’s redesign now live on the site and with no turning back opportunity anymore, it is time to realize that the changes have not all be for the better. If you are not logged in or an active YouTube user you can probably live with the new frontpage design and all, but if you are an active user who gets lots of messages and stuff you’d probably like a way to reach those messages more easily.

You see, YouTube made the decision to move the easily accessible inbox from the front page behind the account name in the top right corner of the screen. To reach the YouTube inbox, you need to first click on the name and then on Inbox to be taken there. Once there you still may need to select a different entry, e.g. comments instead of personal messages which means yet another click before you land there.

The free userscript YouTube startpage inbox changes this by adding the inbox and all of its links back to YouTube’s homepage.

youtube inbox

Once installed, you will see direct links to all inbox entries on the homepage again. The script adds them to the right sisdebar just above the recommended video section there. The links point to personal messages, shared with you, comments, contact suggestions and video responses. Each entry lists the number of unread messages which makes the feature that more convenient as you can now see directly if you have new messages or notifications waiting for you in your inbox.

The inbox at the top lists the total of unread messages and notifications.

Please note that the inbox is only displayed on the frontpage and not on other pages of YouTube.

The script has been tested in the Firefox web browser with the Scriptish extension. It likely works in other browsers such as Google Chrome as well.

Display Your Internet Connection Speed In Your Taskbar

Sometimes you may want to display information about your Internet connection right on the desktop, for instance to test the speed of a new dedicated server that you just bought, or to make sure that you are uploading or downloading at full speed. Having direct access to realtime stats can also be helpful if you are troubleshooting a particular connection.

We have reviewed programs in the past that display the network traffic in the taskbar and on the desktop, with Net Traffic being one of them.

NetSpeedMonitor is another professionally looking option for the Windows operating system. And unlike Net Traffic, it displays the upload and download bandwidth right in the taskbar.

The network monitor can keep a history of the network adapters upload and download speed which it will do by default. You can disable that during setup and later on in the options, which you may want to do if you are only interested in realtime connection speed information.

net speed monitor

The program displays the upload and download bandwidth in kbit per second. You can customize the layout in the program options. Here it is possible to change the font type and size, rendering, prefixes, and the bitrate among other things.

The traffic history can be used to check a system’s monthly bandwidth utilization which can be useful to check that you do not hit bandwidth caps or to troubleshoot recurring issues with the Internet connection.

A data traffic menu is activated if traffic is logged on the system which details sent, received and total traffic per day or month.

The data is populated automatically when the program is running and monitoring is enabled. Monitoring can be turned off, which can be useful if you are working with a laptop in multiple locations and do only want to monitor traffic in some locations.

NetSpeedMonitor can display the list of active connections in another program window. Here you see the process, local and remote IP as well as the state of the connection.

The only downside here is that traffic information are not displayed in the window.

Windows users who like to display realtime traffic information in their taskbar, and those who want to record the bandwidth utilization of their Internet connection, can download the latest version of NetSpeedMonitor from the developer website.

Display Direct Website Links in Google Search

Sometimes I’m searching on Google to copy the search results link into another application. This is an extremely frustrating experience as links are manipulated by Google. When you copy a link in Google’s search results you’ll notice that the link target are displayed correctly when you hover the mouse cursor over the link, but when you copy the link to the clipboard, you will notice that Google has in fact changed that link. This leaves the option to open the site first to copy it from the browser’s address bar, or to use a tool or extension that removes the data that Google adds to links in the search results.

The link to Ghacks in Google Search for instance should be http://www.ghacks.net/ and not http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=ghacks&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ghacks.net%2F&ei=MooNT_vzE5GnsgaegJXbBA&usg=AFQjCNEbVP7B0UnFl1Q9J0q_Vbl9uYoYOw which it is when you copy the link to the clipboard.

Here are two options to display direct website links in Google Search:

Google Search link fix

The Firefox add-on modifies all link targets in the Google search results and all other Google properties where this behavior can be observed, so that they point to the direct web address.

Just install the extension in the Firefox web browser, a restart is not required. If you are on Google Search currently you need to reload the page or run a new search before the extension starts replacing the links.

Firefox users can download the extension from Mozilla’s official Add-ons repository for the browser.

Don’t track me Google

This is a userscript that does the exact same thing the Firefox extension does. It is compatible with Firefox and Google Chrome, and maybe other web browsers as well. The userscript in addition hides the referral link so that sites you visit do not know where you came from.

Chrome users can install the userscript right away, while Firefox users need to install the Greasemonkey or Scriptish add-on first before they can do the same thing.

The userscript can be downloaded and installed over at the official Userscripts website.
