Visual Controls Updated, Remove Third Party Control Panel Applets

The Windows control panel is one of the central hubs of the operating system. It links to administrative tools, lets you maintain your system or troubleshoot it. Third party applications can – and will – add their own icons to the control panel which in itself is not a big issue. Examples of programs that do that are Oracle’s Java, Adobe’s Flash Player, or Nvidia with its control panel.

When you uninstall those programs later, it can happen that their icons in the control panel stay behind. That’s only the icon then with no functionality attached to it anymore.

Visual Controls was created back in 2008 to give Windows users an option to remove third party control panel applets from the operating system again. You can use the software to remove leftover icons or to remove icons from existing programs that you do not want to appear in the control panel.

You can start the program right after you have unpacked it on your system. It requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 or higher to run, which is a given on the majority of operating systems it supports The new version is now fully compatible with Windows 7, and Vista, XP and even Windows 2000. The developer has improved compatibility with older versions of Windows as well in this release. Please note that Visual Controls requires administrative privileges to run.

The program lists all third party control panel applets in its interface once you have started the application.

Just uncheck the applets that you do not want to see anymore in the control panel, and click the apply button afterwards. Applets are listed in alphabetically order, another change in the new version. Once you hit the apply button you will notice that the selected items have been removed from the control panel. You can add them again at a later time by repeating the same steps.

The developer has added several command line arguments to the app which extend the functionality further. You can use the command –enable-global-mode to disable select control panel applets for all users of the system, and –disable-blacklist to display first party applets as well. Both options can be extremely useful for system administrators.

The developer has improved Visual Controls significantly. Better compatibility, and the command line options are especially noteworthy in this regards.

Cookie Controller Gives Firefox Users Control Over Cookies

Cookies have been designed as means to store data on a client’s system. They are used to store session information or preferences for instance, and are nowadays also used for tracking purposes. While there are some attempts to better protect users from tracking, like Mozilla’s Do Not Track preference, cookie handling mostly has remained the same over the years.

If you look at the Firefox browser, you will notice that users can accept or deny first and third party cookies, use exceptions for selected sites, and configure when cookies should be deleted by the browser.

The Firefox add-on Cookie Controller improves the cookie handling in the browser through three status bar icons. Firefox users who install the add-on need to drag and drop some or all of the icons to the status bar, or another location where icons can be placed. The easiest way to do that is to right-click the status bar, select customize from the context menu, and to drag and drop the cookie related icons from the customization window into the browser’s interface.

The first button lets you define cookie permissions for the site you are on currently. You can configure each site to allow or deny cookies, and if cookies are allowed whether they should be stored until the end of the session or until they expire.

You can also list all cookies from that particular domain, and remove DOM and session cookies as well from the context menu. The context menu links to the cookies and exceptions menu of the Firefox browser as well.

The second button displays the number of cookies for the current host and globally, and allows you to browse through the cookies, and to delete cookies individually or in bulk.

The third and final button displays global cookie settings, and allows you to change those global settings with a single click.

The system is actually rather complicated at the beginning, as you need to get your head around the three icons and what they offer in terms of functionality. Once you start to get the hang out of the add-on, you can use it for a number of different asks. From configuring site specific cookie permissions over cleaning specific cookies to quickly changing the global cookie permissions.

RequestPolicy For Firefox Gives You Control Over Cross-Site Connections

The majority of websites make connections to other domains when you connect them. Examples are a site that is using Google Analytics for web statistics or Google Adsense for monetization, embeds videos from YouTube, or uses a content distribution network. Sometimes these requests are needed to use all of a site’s functionality. Amazon for instance loads contents from images-amazon.com. While it is still possible to use the site, part of the site’s functionality is not available until you permit that connection.

RequestPolicy for the Firefox web browser has been designed to put you back in control over the connections the browser makes. It works in this regard similar to the popular NoScript add-on, but with the difference that it does not prevent onsite scripts from running.

When you first install the add-on, you can add sites to the whitelist. The developer has prepared international and location specific lists.

The majority of suggestions allow connections between sites by the same company. Examples are to allow google.com connections when you are on gmail, or fbcdn.net connections when you are on Facebook. These can significantly reduce issues that users encounter after enabling the add-on in the browser. It is however not necessary to add any site combination to the whitelist.

This whitelist approach is different from NoScripts whitelisting approach, as NoScript allows connections from that domain on all websites, whereas RequestPolicy only allows them on one specific site.

RequestPolicy adds an icon to the Firefox status bar that acts as a control panel and indicator at the same time. A red flag indicates that connections have been blocked on a website. A click on the flag displays information about those connections, and options to temporarily or permanently allow those connections to be made on the current site.

The page is automatically reloaded if you allow connections to be made.

The preferences let you manage the whitelist, export or import settings, and modify the strictness of the add-on. The add-on by default uses base domains, e.g. ghacks.net to allow same-site requests. You can change that to full domain names, e.g. www.ghacks.net, or full addresses instead.

What I personally like most about RequestPolicy is the granular whitelisting which allows you to run the same scripts on some sites but not on others (for instance to show Adsense ads on Ghacks, but not on other sites). It is also less intrusive than NoScript if the whitelisting suggestions are added during setup.

Soluto Moves To The Web, Adds Remote Control Options

Remember Soluto, the software that allowed you to optimize the startup time of the Windows operating system? Appears that the developers have moved their application from the desktop to the web. Instead of downloading the program right away, installing it and using it locally, Soluto users now need to create a web account first before they can link up to five PCs with their account. These PCs can be their own, or PCs from friends, family or colleagues that they are asked to take care of.

The desktop application sends information to the web service where they are processed and displayed to the account owner. Soluto has evolved with recent releases. It can still be used to optimize the startup of Windows PCs, but it can also be used for a lot more than that. You’ll first notice that when you open the web interface after you have added your first PC.

The PC is controlled from this startscreen. You get some basic information and quick links to program sections such as Apps, Internet or Protection at the top. Here is an overview of each module:

Apps

Lists updates for installed applications, with options to run the update directly from the web interface.

Just click the update or update all button to update all applications silently in the background. It is furthermore possible to install popular applications such as Open Office, Teamviewer or Adobe Reader from the web interface. All of this happens without disturbing the user working on the PC.

Background Apps

This section lets you optimize the system startup and resource usage by removing applications from the boot process. Soluto divides applications in “safe to remove from boot”, “potentially removable”, and “required (cannot be removed).

Each application is listed with a short description, a recommendation and a pie chart that is visualizing what other Soluto members have done.

Options are to to pause the application from running, to delay it or to make no changes to it.

Internet

Here you see a list of Internet related settings and information. From the default system browser over the current homepage and search engine to the current Internet Service Provider and installed add-ons and plugins.

Soluto lets you manage all aspects right from within the web interface. You can change the default browser, modify that browser’s homepage or search engine, and enable or disable installed add-ons or plugins.

The program displays the same descriptions, recommendations, effects and user pie charts to aid you in the decision making process.

Misc

The protection and hardware sections list information about installed security software and the computer’s hardware. This includes temperature levels, hard drive space, fragmentation level or the ability to enable or disable the firewall on the system.

Once you are a user you can invite other people so that you can help them with their PC. Once that is set up, you control their PC in the same way that you are controlling your own.

The Soluto desktop application needs to be running for that though. The interface lists all the optimizations and changes that have been done to the system, with options to disconnect the PC from Soluto at any time.

Verdict

The idea to control computer systems over the Internet is not new, but Soluto makes it as easy as possible. Controls are limited but end users who give up control still need to put a lot of trust into the person managing their PC from a far.

Tech savvy users may miss a few options, like the system’s actual boot time for comparison purposes, or options to install custom apps on the PC.

Interested users can visit the Soluto website to set up an account. The service is currently in beta.

Soluto will still undo all changes that you are making if you uninstall the software at a later time. Keep that in mind before starting to use the program.

How To control Non-Active Windows With The Mouse

You can only control the active window with your mouse in a default Windows installation. If you need to do something in another window, you need to activate it first, before you can do so. This can for instance be done with a left-click on the window, the program’s taskbar or system tray icon, or a keyboard shortcut like Alt-Tab to bring that window to the front.

Sometimes though you just need to work in that window for a second or so before you continue your work in the other window. This can be you blogging and listening to music at the same time, if you want to skip a song or change the volume for instance. It could also be useful in Windows Explorer when you want to drag and drop files to a folder that is not visible in the file manager’s sidebar.

With Mouse Hunter installed and running in the background, you can control some window functions with your mouse even if that window is not active. This includes scrolling the window up or down or using other functionality that is assigned to the mouse wheel. For media players like SMplayer, this could mean going forward or backwards, or changing the volume of the media that is playing currently.

I often display two web browser windows side by side, for instance the admin interface of this blog when I’m writing an article, and the developer website of the program or service I’m writing about. Instead of having to click around to activate and re-activate windows, I can simply use Mouse Hunter to scroll on the developer site to read up on everything that they have to say about the app or service.

Another application is in Windows Explorer, where I may have selected some files that I want to move or copy to another folder in the sidebar. Once selected, I cannot scroll the sidebar without losing focus on the selected files.

Windows users who like to test the program’s functionality can download it from the developer’s website. The program is freeware and compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the windows operating system.

Manage Social Site Notifications With Notification Control

You probably remember the My Permissions service which I reviewed about a week ago. It basically listed direct links to a dozen or so permission pages of social networking sites. Among the sites where some of the most popular sites on today’s Internet, including Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn or Dropbox.

The service offered little more than direct links though which users could bookmark in their web browsers to access the permission pages directly.

Notification Control, created by Ben Lang and Tim Kendall, has been inspired by My Permissions. The core difference is that Notification Control links to the notification pages of popular services on the Internet.

All you need to do is to click on one of the links to be taken directly to the notification page of the linked services. There you can then change if, when and how you are notified. You could for instance block all notifications to your email account if you do not want to receive notification emails anymore, or enable them again in case you’d like to receive emails again.

A total of 12 services are currently supported, among them Facebook, Twitter, eBay, FourSquare and Google+. Users benefit the most if they use more than one of the services, and chance is good that the average user does.

I’d still recommend to bookmark the notification control panel directly, or at least the general control panel of all sites so that you are able to access the pages directly and without intermediary page. Most users do not need to modify notification settings on a regular basis though.

What’s your take on My Permissions and Notification Control? Do they provide a useful service or is it not useful at all?
