Print Multiple Tabs or Bookmarks As One PDF Document In Firefox

The majority of web page to pdf extensions let you convert a single web page into a pdf document. This may often be all that’s needed, but it is not very practicable if you want to create a pdf document from multiple web pages. While you could now do some copying and pasting into Microsoft Office or Open Office, and use the programs to create the pdf document for you in the end, you’d probably be interested in a more straightforward option.

The Firefox add-on Print pages to Pdf could be a solution, provided that you are running Firefox on Windows or Linux. Linux support has just been added by the developer in the latest add-on version, and it currently is limited to 32-bit versions only. It is likely that this is going to change in the near future.

The extension has a whooping file size of more than 8 Megabytes under Windows, which is something that you should take into considerations, especially on computer’s that do not have a lot of RAM installed.

Once you have installed the extension and restarted the Firefox browser, you will notice that a new entry has been added to the right-click context menu in the browser.

print pages to pdf

Here you can select to print the active tabs, or all open tabs, to pdf. You also get the option to print the pages as they come, or only text. Keep in mind that all tabs of the active window will be printed to pdf in this case, and not all tabs in all windows. One option for researchers would be to bookmark all relevant pages into a single bookmark folder to print the whole folder in the end to a single pdf document. I’d suggest you open a new window before you start your research if you plan to print the open tabs to pdf using the extension.

website to pdf

You can also print bookmarks, for instance in the bookmarks’ folder to pdf. Just right-click a folder or selected bookmarks again and select one of the options displayed to you in the context menu.

Before you start converting websites or bookmarks to pdf, you may want to take a look at the extension options. Here you can make a lot of changes. The general tab allows you to change the output directory and menu appearance in the browser. If you have no intention of converting bookmarks to pdf, you can disable the context menu option here. The pdf document is automatically opened once it has been created, which you can block here as well.

The pdf global and webpage tabs can be used to change the output. The global tab displays options to change the output format to postscript from PDF, configure the output paperformat, units and margins, outlines, and to include a table of contents on the first page of the pdf. The table of contents is pretty interesting, as sub headings are for instance added to the contents as well automatically.

The webpage tab handles styling, header and footer layout preferences for all selected pages and bookmarks. From adding custom text or a header file over including or excluding external and local links, to the exclusion of backgrounds and graphics. It is all there and needs to be configured once for all printing activities. The default settings are working well, but customizing them provides you with more flexibility and cleaner looking print outs.

This extension works really well with several print-related add-ons, like Edit Page.

Switch Between Multiple Bookmark Bars In Google Chrome

If you are making use of the bookmarks bar in Google Chrome, you probably have noticed that it offers limited space for your important bookmarks and not the best manageability. While it is possible to remove bookmarks from the bar directly, or to add the current page as a new one, you won’t find options in the frontend to swap bookmarks around. For that, you need to open the Chrome bookmarks manager.

Bookmark bar switcher is a Chrome extension that enables multiple bookmark bars in the web browser. This allows you to switch between different sets of directly accessible bookmarks, useful for instance if you use the browser for work and home related tasks, or if you have that many important bookmarks that they do not fit on one bar.

The extension adds an icon to Chrome’s address bar. A left-click displays all bookmark bars that are available, as well as options to create a new bar, and to open the browser’s bookmarks manager.

bookmark bar

Only the default bookmark bar with all of its sites is listed there after installation. New bars are created easily from the extension’s context menu. All you need to enter is a name for the new bar, which will then become available as a blank bar in the browser.

You can switch between bars with a left-click on the icon and the selection of one of the available bars. Bookmarks can be added to each bar via drag and drop on the frontend, or in the bookmarks manager.

The bars are listed in a BookmarkBars folder in the bookmarks manager. Each bar is represented by its name for easy identification.

The extension has a few limitations that need to be mentioned here: It is not compatible with bookmark synchronizers, and supports only a limited number of bookmark moves before bookmarks cannot be moved anymore. This is due to Google Chrome’s limitation. A restart should fix the issue though according to the author.

An alternative would be the Chrome Bookmarks Manager which displays all bookmarks and a search option underneath an address bar icon.

Add Multiple Clocks To Thunderbird

I recently switched from using the Fox Clocks extension in Thunderbird to the lightweight Simple Clocks alternative (with a size of 100 Kilobyte compared to Fox Clock’s 700 Kilobyte). Both programs can be configured to display the time of select locations in the world. That’s extremely useful if you are communicating with people from all over the world. The information can aid you in a variety of things, from calling contacts at appropriate times to postponing a reply to the next day as it won’t be read by the client until the next day.

Simple Clocks can display clocks both in the Thunderbird status bar or in a toolbar instead. When you first run Thunderbird after installation of the extension, you need to start adding locations as the locations list is empty on first start.

This is done with a right-click on the status bar icon and the selection of Locations from the context menu. Here you can then use the countries and timezones menu at the top to select a location with the mouse (a double-click adds the location to the status bar), or enter your own country, city and timezone information in the program.

All locations and their current time are displayed in the status bar afterwards. The selection of options from the context menu opens a configuration window. You can change the time format from 12-hour to 24-hour here, select whether you want to add date information or move the clocks to another location in the status bar or to a toolbar.

Simple Clocks can display flags next to each location and time. If you select that option, you first need to download flag information in the Flags tab.

Another interesting option is the ability to change style options. You can change global styles in the settings window, or styles for individual locations in the Locations window instead.

Alarms can be configured for each location individually, and a message can be attached which can act as a reminder for important tasks.

Thunderbird users can download the excellent extension from the official Mozilla Add-ons repository.

Keep Track Of Multiple Timers With WatchMe

There are a lot of programs out there that let you time one or multiple activities on a computer. Cherry Tomato does that for instance automatically by gathering information about the windows that are in the front of the screen. Other programs like Chronometask, Free Light Timer or Time ComX offer timing functionality as well.

Most however do not allow you to keep track of multiple timers the way WatchMe does. The program allows you to create multiple timers to keep track of your day to day activities. The main program window displays all timers, controls to start, stop and reset their time, individual times for each timer and the total time of all timers.

watchme timers

You can start, stop and reset each timer individually. New timers can be added easily from the Timers menu. The program even supports tabs to group timers, for instance by day of the week or type of work.

Besides the ability to name each timer individually, it is possible to add notes to timers, which can be useful to document processes or keep track of things that have been done in the time. Timer alerts can be configured to notify you when a set period of time has elapsed.

You can further configure the program in the Options. Here you can change the default time format from the default hours:minutes:second to another one, e.g. minutes or $ per hour, change colors, enable the stay focused option or enable warnings.

watchme options

There are also options to export data as csv or xml files to import them into other applications like Microsoft Excel or other timer applications.

WatchMe can be a very useful application for users and businesses alike. This can be used to keep track of different work related tasks. Tech support for instance could use timers to keep track of the time they spend on the phone, replying to emails, using remote desktop sessions, communicate with employees in person or walk around in the building to get things fixed.

Windows users can download the latest version of WatchMe from the developer website. The program is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system (starting with Windows XP). It also requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 to run. (via Lifehacker)
