Download Tumblr Photos With TumblRipper

The micro-blogging service Tumblr has risen considerably in popularity in the last two years. It basically offers free micro-blogs to registered users, who can post media or textual contents on the blogs then. If you have never heard of Tumblr before, you are probably wondering how it compares to WordPress. The one big difference is that Tumblr is a more bare-bones system concentrating on the simplicity of the platform itself. This attracts a user-base that wants to start posting right away, without first installing dozens of plugins, widgets, and theme modifications. Tumblr offers built-in social networking features, like the ability to share someone else’s post on Tumblr easily.

A good starting place for new interested users is the explore page on Tumblr which highlights some of the more popular blogs on the site.

If you have a particular photo blog that you are interested in on the site, you’d probably look for a way to download some of the photos posted on it to your computer. While you could do that by right-clicking and selecting Save for every photo your are interested in, you’d probably do not want to do that if the blog is hosting dozens or even hundreds of photos.

Enter TumblRipper, a portable application for Windows that lets you download all posted photos of a Tumblr blog to your computer. When you start the program, you are asked to enter the url of the the desired Tumblr blog and a local directory for the downloaded photos.

download photos tumblr

A click on the load button afterwards downloads the photos to the local PC. The program displays status updates in its interface, highlighting the amount of photos found on the blog, and the downloading progress. Photos are automatically downloaded in the best available resolution, and existing photos will be skipped automatically, provided that you have not changed the save directory in the meantime. A small text file is created in the download directory as well containing the url of the blog that was saved.

If you are regularly downloading photos from Tumblr, you may want to give TumblRipper a try, as it can automate the process for you. If you are more of a selective downloader, the program’s all or nothing approach may not be suitable for you. You can naturally use the program to download all of your own Tumblr photos as well. How To Download Photos From 500px

500px is an online photo community that puts the site’s focus both on social aspects like commenting or rating photos, but also on revenue streams for photographers who can sell their photos on the site. Visitors can explore the various site sections, like upcoming or editor’s choice photos which are displayed as smaller thumbnail images on those pages.

For each photo, information about the camera used to make it are listed, next to user comments, related photos and the photographer’s homepage. Especially the information about the camera settings can be handy for aspiring photographers who have just started taking photos.

Photos can be viewed online, but they cannot be downloaded. When you try to right-click a photo on the site you receive a copyright notification and no context menu.

One of the easiest ways to download photos to your computer, is to disable JavaScript on the site. NoScript users can simply block scripts from running on the main domain to do that. Once done, the normal browser context menu comes up that lets you save photos to your computer right away.

500px save photos

Some users may not have access to add-ons like NoScript to turn off the anti-download protection on the site. That’s where the Simple 500x Download userscript steps in.

The userscript adds a download button to all photo pages on 500px.com. A click on the button opens the photo in a new browser tab from where it can be downloaded to the local computer system. A right-click on the download button and the selection of Save link as saves the photo directly to the computer without opening it up first in a new tab.

It needs to be noted that photos are automatically stored in the browser’s cache when they are viewed on the site. It is therefor theoretically possible to extract them from the browser cache directly.

Have you been to 500px before? If so, what’s your impression of the site?

FotoForensics Indicates If Photos Have Been Digitally Modified

The rise of digital cameras and the move to digital photo formats made image manipulations a lot easier. Now everyone can fire up Photoshop or a comparable tool to make modifications to photos that are not detectable for the human eye. Often, this is used to optimize the output, e.g. increase an area’s brightness level or remove a mole from a face.

Some use it for larger scale modifications, for instance by removing people from images or placing other objects in photos. That’s not an issue if this is disclosed, but that is usually not the case. This is especially important in advertisement, as it may give you the wrong impression of a product.

Back in 2010 I reviewed the Error Level Analysis web service that you could use to analyze photos for modifications. It appears that this service is being shut down soon.

FotoForensics has been created to fill the gap that it is leaving on the Internet. The new service improves upon the old in several ways. It supports both jpg and png image formats, and allows you to not only upload a photo from your computer, but also to analyze a photo that is already hosted on the Internet.

All you need to do to get started is to select either option. The program processes the selected image and displays its results on the next page.

foto forensics

This won’t do you any good if you do not know how to interpret the results.

JPEG images use a lossy compression system. Each re-encoding (resave) of the image adds more quality loss to the image. Specifically, the JPEG algorithm operates on an 8×8 pixel grid. Each 8×8 square is compressed independently. If the image is completely unmodified, then all 8×8 squares should have similar error potentials. If the image is unmodified and resaved, then every square should degrade at approximately the same rate.

ELA saves the image at a specified JPEG quality level. This resave introduces a known amount of error across the entire image. The resaved image is then compared against the original image.

If an image is modified, then every 8×8 square that was touched by the modification should be at a higher error potential than the rest of the image. Modified areas will appear with a higher potential error level.

A good getting started guide is the tutorial on the Foto Forensics website that demonstrates different modification levels with sample photos.
