Move Facebook friends to acquaintance list for less news feed posts
If your Facebook news feed is filling up daily with posts from friends that you are not really that much in contact with, if at all, you may want to do something about it to give messages from friends that you care about more exposure in your feed. While you could do that manually by going through the list of friends on Facebook to move friends to the list of acquaintances or restricted friends, Facebook may help you out with the initial sorting.
All you need to do is visit the friend’s organizer page on Facebook to have the site go through your list of friends to suggest friends that you have not interacted with lately. You can move some, all or none of the friends to the list of acquaintances.

Acquaintances are still friends but posts made by them will show up rarely in your news feed. You can also post messages that only friends, but not acquaintances, see.
Facebook in the first step looks at people in smart lists, and then in a second step at all of your friends on the site. Smart lists are automatic lists of friends based on common parameters such as location, job or school.
Please note that Facebook only lists about 30 of your friends per page, and that you need to click on the include link at the bottom to display all suggestions on the page.
The built-in tool is a little known feature that Facebook makes available to all of its users. If you think that your news feed is flooded with posts by friends that you are not that interested in, you may want to give it a try to reduce the number of news items that you have to browse through on the social networking site. This has the added benefit that it becomes less likely that you will miss an important update by a friend you are interested in or in contact with.
You can manually move friends to the list of acquaintances or restricted users with a click on the friends symbol on the friend’s profile page and the selection of add to another list from the context menu. (found at Caschy)

Facebook Messenger for Windows Now Officially Available
Facebook Messenger leaked back in December, and Facebook decided to keep the link active that was pointing to the program’s download. Today, Facebook is officially releasing Messenger for Windows, promising that Mac users will get their version of the messenger application soon as well.
Facebook Messenger basically gives you an option to chat with your Facebook friends and contacts without having the Facebook.com website open at all.
Installation of the program should not be a problem, as it is silent and without settings that need to be made. The Messenger is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Once installed, you can start it and enter your Facebook login details to get started.
The Messenger opens the main interface that combines Facebook’s header with the news ticker and chat sidebar after log in.

Here you see the friend requests, messages and notifications on top, followed by the live ticker that updates whenever a friend likes, posts or befriends someone on Facebook. This way you see more news and contacts available for chat.
You can start a chat with a left-click on one of your contact’s names. A search is provided to find a specific contact. Only five friends are displayed by default in the interface. You can use the attach to sidebar button to attach the interface to the right side of your monitor, so that it takes up all vertical screen estate there.
Facebook Messenger stores your log in information unless you sign out before you close the application. If you do not sign out, you are automatically logged in again when you start the application again at a later time. You can log out of Facebook with a click on the settings button next to search, and the selection of log out. Here you can also go offline, which may be useful to block chat messages in case they are too distracting or unwanted at that time.
You can chat with multiple friends at the same time. Each friend is displayed in a tab in the chat interface.
The biggest advantage of Facebook Messenger is that it provides access to chat and notifications in a much smaller window. If you are keeping your web browser open only to chat on Facebook, or prefer your chat window and notifications to be visible all the time, then the Messenger app might be for you.
Keep in mind though that it does not support all the features just yet. You cannot chat with groups, do video calls or edit settings other than the settings mentioned above. If that does not bother you, Facebook Messenger for Windows might be just for you.
Update: Facebook Messenger for Windows is currently only compatible with Windows 7. Facebook is however working on versions for Vista and XP.

Facebook Logout Ads, Bing First to Advertise
In the past year, Facebook and Microsoft have started to work closely together. Microsoft has for instance added Facebook to its recently purchased Skype software, and to the company’s Bing search engine, where Facebook users who are logged in to their account will see their friend’s likes in the search results.
Bing on the other hand became Facebook’s web search provider. Facebook yesterday has launched a new ad unit that is poised to increase the company’s revenue noticeably.
The new Facebook logout ad unit is displayed to users who log out of their account on the social networking site. The Facebook header with the company’s logo and log in options is still showing up on the logout page, but the rest of the page is filled with the new ad unit.

The first company to take advantage of the new ad format? Microsoft with their Bing search engine of course. The ad looks like a cross-breed of Bing’s homepage and a new Facebook timeline profile. The Bing logo, search form and background image are displayed on top, while likes and popularity information are displayed in the ad’s footer.
Users who use the search form to search on the Internet will notice that their results open in a new tab in their browser, and not in the same tab.
According to Techcrunch, there are 37 million users in the U.S. alone that log out of Facebook every day.
Some Facebook users are already seeing the new ad unit when they log out, while other’s do not. It is not clear if the ad unit is only displayed to Facebook users from the U.S., or if it’s visible worldwide. With Bing being mediocre in localized markets, it is likely that the campaign is targeting Facebook users from the U.S. only. There has been no official confirmation though yet.
The ad campaign could help Bing snag away additional search market shares from its main competitor Google. Facebook users who are not interested in the ad can click on the close button to see the usual Facebook logout page instead.

How To Move The Facebook Chat Window
We have covered quite a few Facebook modifications and tips in the past that let you get more out of Facebook Chat. A userscript for instance to add easier access to emoticons in chat or how to hide from friends on Facebook chat.
Pretty Facebook Chat is a Google Chrome extension that lets you customize your Facebook Chat experience further. You will notice the red dot that the extension adds next to Facebook’s Chat menu on the lower right corner of the page. This is used to turn the extension on or off. Once you start a chat with someone on Facebook, you will notice the modified user interface right away.

The first thing that becomes obvious right away is that the chat window is no longer attached to the page. You can drag and drop the chat around on the page to move it to a position that you find more comfortable. You can however only move it around in the Chrome window, and not to a location outside of it.
You may also notice that the chat window is larger than the standard window on Facebook, and that its author has added interface customizations to it, like shadows or little animations.
Another thing that you will notice is the emoticons button that has been added to the window. You can click on it to display a large list of emoticons and images that you can add to the chat with a click. This even includes a list of miniature profile pictures that can be added to individual messages.
Here is a video that demonstrates the capabilities of the extension.
Facebook users who use the Chrome browser to connect to the site may want to take a look at the extension to spice up their chat experience on the site. The extension is available for direct installation at the official Chrome Web Store.

Mentor FM Tunes Into Your Facebook Account To Play Music You Like
Mentor FM is one of those tools that it is pretty awesome and scary at the same time. The Internet radio tunes into your Facebook account to play music that you like. The awesome part is that it usually gets things pretty right in this regard. All you need to do is to give the app permissions to connect to your Facebook account before you can start listening to a playlist that has been specifically made for you.
The scary part is actually what makes the application that good: Facebook seems to know your music taste pretty well. The application displays up and down vote buttons on the radio page that you can use to further finetune the music listening experience.

Basic playback controls are displayed on the page as well. Here you can change the volume of the music, pause, stop and play songs or skip ahead to the next song if you do not really like the one that is currently playing.
Mentor.fm displays the artist or band, and the genre of the music on the page as well. It feels rather strange that the name of the song is not among the information displayed there.
If the playlist is not what you are looking for, you can let the radio station load a new playlist with different songs.
The surprise me mode finally lets you look beyond your music taste to discover a different kind of music. When I first used surprise me the radio started to play songs from artists such as Emilio Santiago, Jazzkantine or Renata Tebaldi, music that I would not listen to at all otherwise.
The site is a music experiment, that will be online for about 2 months before the makers will take it offline again. One of the interesting aspects of the site is that you can just turn on the radio and start listening, without having to perform searches or songs first. The service uses a user’s likes on Facebook and generates the playlist from those information. (via Freeware Genius)

Facebook Users Can Soon Listen To Music With Their Friends
When I discover a great video or music track on the Internet I often want to share it with friends who I know have a similar taste when it comes to entertainment. What I really like to do is to watch videos together with friends. This works considerably well as we are often using Teamspeak or comparable voice over IP software for communication.
Facebook has just announced that the company will soon enable a feature on the social networking site that allows users to listen to music together on the site. Friends currently listening to music will have a music icon next to their online status in the Facebook sidebar.
Just hover with your mouse over the username and click on the listen with button to listen to the same music your friend is listening to.

The music will automatically be synchronized so that you start listening to the music at the same position that your friend is currently at.
Alexander Roche’s blog post at the official Facebook blog even hinted at the possibility that it will be possible to listening to music in groups, with one friend playing the DJ while everyone is listening to the music.
Information about the current session can be displayed in chat, with the possibility that other users join in to make it a group listening experience and chat session.
Music is powered by third party applications that users need to first enable on their accounts before they can listen with others to the same music.
Facebook notes that only “the people you’ve shared your listening activity with can see when you’re listening with a friend”. General privacy related settings for the application can be set under App Settings which for instance allows you limit music information to just yourself or a close group of friends.

The new feature is currently being rolled out. Official information indicate that it will take a few weeks before every Facebook user can make use of the new feature. This only affects Facebook users who have a music app installed or will install one on the site.
What’s your take on the new feature?
