Bing Launches Linked Pages

One of the issues that you may have when searching for friends, family or people online is that you will get all sorts of results. Depending on the person’s Internet activities and popularity on the Internet, you may get some, none or a lot of results about that person on the first pages of the search engine you are using. Other factors like the person’s name play a role as well. If you are searching for a popular name, you may have to wade through hundreds of results before you get the first hit.

Bing’s Linked Pages feature was launched today to provide Facebook users with an easier option to find friends, and to make themselves more visible in the search engine.

Here is how it basically works out. You link Bing to your Facebook account, and once you have done that, you can select web pages that you want to be associated with.

You get started here on the Linked Pages page on Bing, which on first use will ask you to enter your Facebook login information to link Bing to the account. You are then automatically redirected to your name’s search results page on Bing. Here you can start to select web pages that you want to be associated with.

Just click on the Link to me button to add a link to that page to your name. If you make a mistake, you can click on unlink me to remove the link again. You can also start searching for other pages and websites that you own or work with, to add those to your account as well.

Your Facebook friends will then see those pages displayed prominently when they search for your name in Bing.

You can also link your Facebook friends to pages, to help them “show up better on Bing. It looks as if those links are only available to the user who added them.

The service has some limitations. It first is only available for Bing US. You may be able to make use of it if you change your location to the US if you use a different localized version of Bing otherwise. The second limitation is that only your Facebook friend’s can see the links that you have added to your name on Bing.

It is likely that Microsoft will use the information to create better search results, but for now, that is all you get.

I personally like the idea of selecting the links that I want to be associated with. This gives users more control over how they appear online. Everyone should keep in mind though that it is still possible to find other pages about you.

What’s your take on the new feature?

You can read about the announcement here on the official Bing blog.

Resize Images Directly On Web Pages In Firefox

It happens that you stumble upon a site where images are posted that are simply to small to make out all of the details. Some let you view a larger version of the image when you click on it, while others do not offer larger versions of the images at all. This can be a problem, for instance on shopping sites if you’d like to zoom in on a photo of an item that you consider purchasing.

We have covered extensions and userscripts before that can do that, like the Image Zooming extension or the userscripts Mouseover Popup Image Viewer and Zoom Image.

The Image Resizer/Scaler extension offers a different solution, that many Firefox users may find more comfortable and less obtrusive to use. Instead of zooming an image on mouse over, or on right-click, the extension adds drag zooming to the web browser.

All that it takes to zoom an image is to hold down the left mouse button while the mouse cursor hovers over it, to either zoom in or out by moving the mouse into the upper left or lower right direction. The cursor changes once you start moving the mouse to indicate that you can now zoom in or out with the mouse.

You need to keep in mind though that the image is limited to the space it was posted on, which means that you may not see all of the image if you zoom out to much. This is for instance the case on Google+ where images cannot go beyond the post width.

Two additional features have been added by the author of the extension. A right-click on the image resets it to its original size, while a double-click maximizes it automatically. You can also hold down the Ctrl key to disable the feature for the time being on the current page.

All in all a useful extension for users who want mouse image zooming capabilities in the browser.

Oogle Highlights Google Image Results On Pages In Chrome

If you are using Google Image search for your image finding needs you’d probably noticed that it is sometimes not as easy to find the image on the page if you are clicking through. This is especially true for pages with dozens or even hundreds of images on a single page.

The Google Chrome Oogle extension improves this essential part of the image search experience in multiple ways. When you click on an image in the search results you are still taken to the page the image was found on. Instead of having to scroll down until you locate it by yourself, this is now handled by the extension automatically.

It will automatically scroll to the location of the image on the page so that you can see it right away. To top it all off, it furthermore highlights the image with a border so that you can recognize it even if other images are displayed next to it on the page.

Identification works very well most of the time. The developer has stated however that there are pages where it does not work yet.

Chrome users can change the highlighting color from black to another color in the extension’s options.

Just enter another color into the “highlight image in page with a shadow in” form. You should see the new color immediately being applied to the border of the form.

The options furthermore allows you to switch between the new and old style of image results, and to enable Google’s lightbox which overlays the image you have been searching for on the page it has been posted on.

Oogle is a basic extension that can speed up the a user’s workflow considerably when searching for images on Google’s image search engine.

The ability to highlight and scroll to the image sets it apart from other solutions. Chrome users can download and install Oogle from the official Chrome Web Store.
