Firefox 11 Stable Released

Firefox users who cannot wait to update the stable channel of the web browser from version 10 to 11, can download the new version from the official Mozilla ftp server or third party download sites early. Please note that while it is unlikely that the final version will get replaced in last minute, it has happened in the past. It is recommended to wait for the official release announcement if Firefox is running in a productive environment, or if you do not need to have access to the new feature set introduced in the browser right away.

It will take approximately three days before the internal updater picks up the new version and offers to upgrade the browser automatically. You can check for the installed version with a click on Firefox > Help > About Firefox.

firefox 11

The beta release notes highlight the changes that Mozilla has implemented in the new version of the browser. Probably the biggest feature for end-users is support for add-on synchronization as part of Firefox Sync. This feature can be used to synchronize installed browser add-ons between all versions of the browser where sync is enabled on.

Firefox users who are using Google Chrome as well on the system can now migrate their bookmarks, history and cookies from the browser as part of the migration process.

The majority of features are only interesting for web developers and developers in general. Firefox 11 supports the CSS text-size-adjust property, and the outerHTML property. Developers can furthermore make use of the Style Editor for editing CSS, and the new Page Inspector 3D View which is available if the computer is compatible with WebGL.

page inspector 3d

Firefox 11 furthermore supports the SPDY protocol for faster page loads, and XMLHttpRequest HTML parsing.

The change log lists unresolved issues, among them some that have been noticed by some users in previous versions of the browser as well. This includes the slow scrolling in the Gmail window, or jerky scrolling and text input under certain conditions.

It is not really necessary to update the browser right now, instead of waiting the three days before the official announcement is being made. It would be different if stability or security updates were included in the release.

Update: Mozilla is preparing to replace the current version with an update. It is not advised to download the release version just yet.

Portable File Syncing Software Synchroncity 6 Released

More than two years after my initial review of the file sync and backup software Synchronicity comes an update to Synchronicity 6. Has the software changed in those two years, and if it did, for the better or worse? Lets find out.

The program is still offered as a portable version and installer, in a tiny 300 Kilobyte package. When you first launch the app after unpacking or installing, you are asked whether you’d like to enable automatic updates. The program then starts the profile listing where you see all synchronization and backup profiles that you have previously created, and a button to create new profiles.

create syncronicity

The core information about the selected profile are displayed right on the screen. Here you see the selected source and destination root directories, the synchronization method, filters and scheduling.

New profiles are created in a separate window where you can configure the data syncing. Here you select the source and destination directories, with options to sync all or only select folders and files. As far as files go, you can select to either include or exclude (but not both) specific files or filetypes.

The program supports copying all matching files from the source directory to the destination directory, incremental synchronization (which copies everything but keeps the files that are already in the directory), or two-way incremental synchronization which makes sure that files in the source and destination directory are always kept in sync and never deleted.

So far so similar. When you use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-E in the main window, you enable Expert mode, which adds new advanced features to the program. The new settings add backup integrity checks and the dynamic creation of destination folders as options to the synchronization process. Besides expert mode, there is also a hidden feature section that need to be enabled in the profilename.sync file. Hidden features include excluding hidden files and folders, excluding specific folders, diff/file comparisons, text-only logs or beta features like wake-up actions. You can read up on both expert and hidden features in the program here.

Synchronicity 6 in particular comes with new command line options (the /all switch to sync all profiles), new hidden settings like the ability to ignore files that are older than a specified number of days, or the option to send log files to email addresses.

Here is a selection of features that have been added in the past two years:

(Hidden setting) Customizable delay between queued profiles.Send logs by e-mail (see “scripts/mail.bat /?” for more info).(Hidden setting) Forget (discard) files older than a custom number of days.(Hidden setting) Exclude hidden files.Command-line switch to sync all profiles (/all).Improved error reporting.(Expert setting) Estimate remaining time (experimental).(Expert setting) On-the-fly BZip2, GZip compression(Expert setting) Show diff for modified files.(Expert setting) Compare file size in addition to last modified date.Full PDF manual.“/log” command-line switch: forces the creation of an application logSpecial server builds.Localized installer, in most of the supported languages.Add a setting to catch up missed backups (when a scheduled backup has been repeatedly missed, forces its immediate execution).

Add to that the standard features like the backup scheduler, a preview option to test run a profile, and a bunch of command line options, and you come to the conclusion that the program has evolved in the past two years without becoming bloated. Great program, highly recommended for users of the Windows operating system.

System Ninja 2.3.2 Released With Blacklist Support

System Ninja is a temporary file cleaner like CCleaner or Bleachbit. The program scans a system for junk files, temporary files and other unwanted files, to free up disk space. System Ninja is available as a portable version and installer, which both offer the same functionality.

When you first start the program you are presented with three tabs at the top that lead to the program’s core functionality. The Junk Scanner scans select hard drives for temporary files. It does not offer as many third party cleaning options as CCleaner or Bleachbit, but is pretty solid when it comes to cleaning browser and operating system traces and temp files.

The two remaining tab link to a startup and process manager that can be used to remove programs from the system, and kill running processes, and a PC analysis section that lists hardware information. The startup and process manager are basic, and usually not needed as Windows tools can handle the same job just fine.

system ninja 2.3.2

System Ninja has been updated to version 2.3.2 today. Existing users can check for updates under Options > Settings > Check Now. The program should recognize the new version and offer to update to it automatically. New users can download the latest version from the developer website over at Singular Labs.

The new version introduces new features to the program that include an option to ignore specific programs which basically protects its data from being cleaned by the application. The new System Ninja version ships with Polish, Russian and Swedish interface languages, improved Windows 8 compatibility and an option to include beta versions in the update checks.

The software is not as feature rich as CCleaner. There is for instance no option to add custom folders or locations to the cleanup. Users who are just looking for a temporary file cleaner on the other hand find both programs to be more than capable for that task.

Are you a CCleaner user, or do you prefer a different program to clean up your system?

Internet Explorer 10 Preview 5 Released

Included in today’s Windows 8 Consumer Preview release was an updated version of Microsoft’s upcoming web browser Internet Explorer 10. IE10 Platform Preview 5 is available both in the operating system’s Metro interface, and on the desktop version of Windows 8. Both versions share the same core engine that is optimized for HTML5 contents.

The Metro version is bare bones, as Microsoft has blocked the Internet browser from running browser plugins such as Adobe Flash or Java. The desktop version on the other hand supports plugins just like previous versions of the web browser did. Another difference is the tab-less design of the Metro Internet Explorer which can open only one web page at a time.

Windows 8 includes one HTML5 browsing engine that powers both browsing experiences (the Metro style one and desktop one) as well as Metro style applications that use HTML5 and JavaScript. The common HTML5 engine provides consistently fast, safe, and powerful support for Web standards and the Web programming model, for both browser experiences as well as for Metro style applications.

When you run the HTML5 Test you’ll notice that compatibility with the technology has been improved considerably in comparison to Microsoft’s current browser Internet Explorer 9. IE10 manages to score 314 and 6 bonus points in the test, while IE9 only 141 and 5 bonus points. Internet Explorer 10 still takes the back seat in comparison to other browsers, but the gap has been closed almost completely. The number one browser currently is Google Chrome 16 with a score 371 and 15 bonus points.

html5test

Microsoft has released new HTMl5 demonstrations at their IE Test Drive site to see how the browser performs and compares in these tests.

A plugin-free browser will run into issues on websites that use use plugin technologies. Microsoft recommends that these sites use detectors to replace proprietary technologies with technologies that do not require plugins.

To deliver the richest experience, and one experience that scales across different devices, we continue to recommend that developers detect when plug-ins are not available and rely on native browser patterns.

Microsoft plans to release the final version of Internet Explorer 10 with the release of the Windows 8 operating system later this year. The browser has been announced for Windows 8 and Windows 7, but no version of it has been released until now for the current Windows operating system. Webmasters and businesses can test their websites and services only if they install the developer or consumer preview version of Windows 8.

You can read Dean Hachamovitch’s update announcement at the official Internet Explorer Blog.

Secunia Personal Software Inspector 3.0. Beta Released

Making sure your system and the software running on it is up to date is one of the things that you need to do to protect it from malicious attacks and malware. And while updating works more or less automatic when it comes to the Windows operating system, the same cannot be said for software that is running on it. Windows 7 and previous Microsoft Windows systems do not include options to scan for and install third party software updates.

This changes only slightly with the release of Windows 8. While it still won’t be able to update desktop applications natively in the operating system, it will be possible to update web apps via Microsoft’s Windows Store.

Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) is a free program that scans the system for programs that are installed in an outdated version.

The developers have just released the first beta version of Secunia PSI 3.0 for Windows. The new version introduces automated patching of applications to the program which makes the updating of software more comfortable and at the same time faster than before.

When you start the program for the first time after installation, you are asked to run a scan on the system. Secunia compares the list of installed software with the latest versions stored in their database. A list of outdated programs are then displayed in the program interface.

secunia psi 30

Depending on the software, it is now possible to run an automatic update or a manual update. Some applications may require additional information, language for instance, before they can be updated on the system. A manual update usually opens the website of the software developer from where the new version of the program needs to be downloaded and installed manually.

Users of previous Secunia versions may also notice the simplified – some would say minimalistic – user interface. The first screen displays a single scan button on start that needs to be clicked on to run the initial system scan. The next menu lists the software that requires an update, a scan again button and a need help link.

Information that were displayed in previous versions, the threat level of applications that were not up to date for instance, are missing. No option is provided in the beta to switch back to an expert version that displays those information again.

The minimalistic design and concentration on the program’s core feature should appeal to Windows users who use the program to update their software. Experienced users on the other hand will certainly miss some of the features that previous versions of Secunia PSI offered.

Secunia PSI 3.0 is compatible with all recent 32.bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview to be Released [Updated]

The waiting and uncertainty are finally over and at long last all our questions will be answered as Microsoft are set to release the Windows 8 Consumer Preview (beta) later today during an event in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress event.  The launch, which takes place at 3pm local time (2pm GMT, 9am EST, 6am PST) will see a download link go live sometime during the event and we’ll post that link here for you straight away, so stay with gHacks!

I’ve had a very full mailbag since September when the Developer Preview was released to much hype and publicity.  The questions, mainly coming from IT Pros have concerned their traditional ways of working.  They wanted to know if Metro was just going to be it as far as the interface was concerned or if they would be able to set the desktop as their default user interface.  Indeed I’ve already given a few talks to IT Pros and businesses on this subject and there are more still booked in for the next few months.

It’s not unexpected or unreasonable for people to be concerned, Microsoft have chosen the Mobile World Congress event at which to launch the beta.  This is the biggest annual trade show for companies displaying and showing off their latest mobile computing wares, which include tablets.  It’s very clear then that what people are going to see and hear today will be Metro, Metro, Metro as Microsoft have got a significant amount of catching up to do in the tablet marketplace, and are, effectively, putting all their eggs into one basket.

This doesn’t mean that Windows 8 won’t offer adequate features and an interface for the rest of the world, and we’ll find out later today what the situation is.  Personally I’ll be focusing on finding the answers to the questions people have been asking me the most, and “Can the desktop be set as the default interface” is at the very top of my to do list.  This will be the first thing I do and the first thing I look for.

Windows 8 Videos:

It is just one of a great many questions people have however.  These include how extra functionality is being built into Metro both in terms of mouse gestures and menu features for apps.  While many people are resistant to Metro, not just for only being able to run one or two apps on screen at any one time (not very useful on many large desktop screens these days) there are also a great many people very excited about it.

Suffice to say we’ll soon see what the real deal is, and if it’s even feature-locked and finished as we would expect it to be.  There have been many rumours flying around in the last couple of weeks about difficulties Microsoft was apparently having getting the beta ready in time.

As I said, we’ll let you know immediately the download is available.  Will you be getting it today?  Are you excited, indifferent or wanting to wait until you get more information?  Do you even care about downloading the beta?  Why not tell us here in the comments.

The download is now live HERE, but please remember this is just a beta, so shouldn’t be considered finished and stable for everyday use!

CCEnhancer 3.0 Released, Now With BleachBit Support

One of the main selling points of the popular file cleaning software CCleaner is its extensibility. Instead of just having to live with the cleaning options that the software developers have integrated into their program, users can add custom locations to CCleaner that they want cleaned whenever the program is run.

The basic idea behind CCEnhancer was to provide users with a collection of additional cleanup locations. This collection has grown to several hundred rule sets ever since the first version of the program was released by the developer.

The program installs the rules into CCleaner which become available immediately afterwards in the program interface. CCEnhancer technically adds new definitions to CCleaner’s winapp2.ini file, which contains all of the program’s cleanup information.

ccleaner enhancer 3

CCEnhancer installs the latest rule sets automatically if CCleaner has been installed on the target system. Users of the portable version may need to click on Settings > Portable Locations to add the portable paths in there for CCEnhancer to recognize them.

The new version of the application comes with debugging capabilities. This basically checks the winapp2.ini file for errors which can be handy if the installation did not complete successfully, or if you are experiencing issues with CCleaner after installing the new rule sets.

ccleaner

The developer of CCEnhancer has improved the program’s detection mechanism and added capabilities to update multiple CCleaner versions simultaneously. That’s useful for instance if one version of the program is installed on the computer, while a portable version is stored on a connected USB device.

BleachBit users can now benefit from the rule sets of CCEnhancer as well, as the author has added support for the junk cleaner to the latest version of the program.

Additional – minor – features have been added to the program. This includes a program interface that can be resized now, or an updated translation engine to better support additional interface languages.

Interested users can download CCEnhancer 3.0 from the developer website over at SingularLabs. The program is compatible with all recent Microsoft Windows versions.

Avast Free Antivirus 7 Final Released

Avast on Thursday has released the final versions of their 2012 security lineup. Avast Free Antivirus 7, Pro Antivirus 7 and Internet Security 7 are now available at the official site and in-software updates. The new version ships less than three weeks after the beginning of the official beta test which we have covered earlier this month here on Ghacks.

The company has added two new features to the security software, and improved several existing ones. Avast has moved the virus definition databases to the cloud to provide users with real-time definition updates. Instead of delivering traditional update packages, definitions are now updated whenever they are created. This improves security by reducing the time it takes to update the databases on the client PCs.

The second new feature is a file reputation system which provides information about a file to the user before it is opened, and is also used internally for the decision making process. This is basically a cloud based reputation service that looks at how Avast users who came into contact with the file handled it.

A Remote Assistance feature has been added to all Avast 7 versions. This basically gives someone else control over your computer, which may be helpful for tech support for instance. If you are the tech guy in your family, you could use it to remotely log in to other computers to fix issues without being locally present.

Avast has improved additional program features that are not included in the free antivirus version. This includes the automatic sandbox and browser sandboxing module. Avast moves suspicious programs automatically in a sandbox where the program’s behavior is analyzed. This serves two purposes: It first ensures that the program cannot harm the underlying system, and second that Avast can generate a report that recommends how the program should be treated in the future.

The free version of Avast Antivirus supports all realtime-shields the program ships with, compatibility with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows (including Windows 8 Beta support), and a customizable installation option that makes sure that Avast Antivirus can be installed next to other security software as a second line of defense on the system.

Interested users find Avast Free Antivirus 7 download links on this page on the Avast website. It redirects to CNET where it is offered without the CNET installer.

Update
: Please note that Avast 7 will install the Google Chrome browser if you are not paying attention to the installation menu.

VLC 2.0 Has Been Released, Download Links Inside

We have followed the latest VLC development ever since Videolan pushed the first build of the media player’s new version to the public ftp server. It did not take long after that initial release before the first release candidate build was made available.

The developers today have released the final version of the media player. Interested users can download it directly from the official website where it is available for Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh and Linux operating systems. The 64-bit version of Windows has not been posted yet on the VLC 2.0 download page. Only a 64-bit Mac OS X version has been posted yet. It is not clear if the developers have postponed the released of the 64-bit Windows version, or if they plan to release the first official 64-bit release for the operating system in one of the next releases instead.

The release notes lists all the important changes of VLC 2.0 Twoflower sorted into groups such as video, audio, formats or professional users.

The developers have added experimental Blu-Ray disc support to VLC 2.0. It is experimental because of its limitations. This first version does not support menus yet, and does not ship with AACS and BD+ DRM libraries that are needed to play back copy protected Blu-Ray discs.

vlc 2.0 media player

Other changes include a rewritten video output core and modules, new video outputs for Windows 7, Android and iOS, and multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4 and WebM. The developers have added support for several professional codecs and formats, including HD and 10bits codecs as well as SDI and HD-SDI card support for input on Linux.

Mac users benefit from extensions support and OS X Lion integration, continued support for OS X 10.5 and Power PC users, and support for all QTKit devices.

VLC 2.0 improves the decoding performance on multi-core processor systems, systems that support gpu hardware decoding and mobile hardware the player runs on. A click on Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs > Use GPU accelerated decoding reveals whether gpu hardware acceleration is enabled in the media player. It is turned off by default.

Users who do not want VLC to remember which videos they played in the media player can disable the history feature in the Interface Settings under Save recently played items.

Have you worked with VLC 2.0 already? If so, what is your opinion of the new release? Oh, and if you prefer direct links to the downloads, use this link.

Thunderbird 10.0.1 Update Released

Mozilla has just released an update to the Thunderbird email client, shortly after releasing a similar update for the Firefox web browser that brought the version to 10.0.1. Thunderbird 10.0.1 is a stability and security release, and as thus a recommended update for all users of the messaging software.

The update is already available, and Thunderbird users can either download it from the official developer website or use their client’s internal updater to download and apply it. A click on Help > About Thunderbird performs the update check and displays the current version of the program in a small window.

thunderbird 10.0.1

Lets take a look at the changes in Thunderbird 10.0.1.

The security advisory page over at Mozilla offers details on the issue that has been fixed in the update. It affected not only the email client, but also Thunderbird and SeaMonkey as well.

Mozilla developers Andrew McCreight and Olli Pettay found that ReadPrototypeBindings will leave a XBL binding in a hash table even when the function fails. If this occurs, when the cycle collector reads this hash table and attempts to do a virtual method on this binding a crash will occur. This crash may be potentially exploitable.

The change log lists several fixes to improve stability without going into further detail on the subject. Sören Hentzschel mentioned a crash in the client’s importer when importing mails from Microsoft Outlook.

The release of Thunderbird 10.0.1 comes less than two weeks after the last update that moved the version of the email client to 10. Thunderbird 10 introduced a new right-click search option to search directly from within Thunderbird. Results are either displayed directly in Thunderbird in new tabs, or in the default web browser whichever is preferred.

Other changes include new keyboard shortcuts and an extension compatibility change that should reduce the issues that Thunderbird users have in this regard.

Mozilla, developers of the popular Firefox web browser, have just released an update for the browser’s stable branch that moves the version to 10.0.1. The release may come as a surprise to users of Firefox 10, who were updated to that version only ten days ago.

This is not the first occurrence that a critical update is released shortly after a major version upgrade of the web browser. Similar updates had to be delivered after the release of Firefox 9 and Firefox 8.

Firefox 10.0.1 fixes critical issues that came to light shortly after Firefox 10 had been released to the public. This includes at least one startup crash when the browser is opened by the user, and one Java related issue that is causing text fields to hang in the browser. Firefox users can resolve that issue manually by minimizing or resizing the browser. The patch released later today will fix the issues permanently though.

The product planning summary lists additional issues that the developers are currently looking into. This includes issues with AVG’s SafeSearch extension that is blocking the enter key from functioning correctly in the browser’s address bar. While it it possible to click on the go button to be taken to the site, it is a issue that the developers want to resolve as quickly as possible.

Other issues mentioned in the summary are additional crashes, and incompatibilities with Norton products and RealPlayer Video Downloader.

The release is already available on the Mozilla release ftp server and on third party download portals such as Softpedia. It is likely that the new version will be pushed to all users later today. At that point it will also be offered for download on the Mozilla website and as an update in the browser.

Please note that both the standard Firefox 10 build and Firefox 10 ESR will receive the update to Firefox 10.0.1.

Clipboard Magic 5 Released After Six Years

Remember Clipboard Magic? No? Then you are in good company as the program has not made the news in the last six years. The developer of the clipboard manager has released version 5 of the program after six years of radio silence. Clipboard Magic 5 at its core is a clipboard manager for the Windows operating system that improves the standard clipboard functionality significantly.

All text that you copy to the clipboard is saved automatically by the program, so that you can access each entry for as long as the program is up and running. You can paste a saved entry easily by selecting it first with the left-mouse button or cursor keys in the program interface, and then using the shortcut Ctrl-v to paste it into another application. Even better, you can copy multiple saved clips to paste them all at once into another application.

This is done by selecting multiple clips in the Clipboard Magic interface, selecting Edit > Copy all clips to the clipboard (or alternatively Shift-Ctrl-A), and then pasting the contents directly via Ctrl-V or the mouse.

All major program features are accessible both via menus and the mouse, and keyboard shortcuts. The program supports two special pasting shortcuts. You can use Shift-Ctrl-[0-9] to paste the last ten saved entries directly without selection. The shortcut Shift-Ctrl-P allows series pasting. The shortcut may interfere with other programs like Firefox (where it launches private browsing mode). You can change both keyboard shortcuts in the program options.

Clipboard Magic users can furthermore edit saved clipboard items, add items manually to the program, and use the programs find and replace feature to modify contents right in the program interface. Entries can be edited with a simple double-click on the entry’s line in the program window. You can leave the editing window again with a click on View > Zoom out or the shortcut Ctrl-PageDown.

Clip lists can be saved in a native format or as text documents. Both can be loaded into the program again at a later time.

The program preferences offer extensive configuration options. From changing shortcuts to configuring auto saves, visible toolbar buttons, to the number of rows and the font face used in the program window. You can furthermore load the last used list on program start automatically.

clipboard magic options

Clipboard Magic is fully Unicode compatible. It is compatible with all versions of the Windows operating system from Windows ME up to the latest version (currently Windows 7). Interested users can download the latest program version from the developer website.

Screenshot Captor 3 Released

One essential tool in a blogger’s repertoire is a screenshot capturing software. These programs range from basic applications to sophisticated tools that offer editors and other features that make life a lot easier.

Screenshot Captor is one of those Swiss army knifes in the screenshot taking world. The program supports all the capturing options that users expect, from capturing the whole workspace to individual windows, free form rectangles or scrolling windows. All modes are selectable from within the program interface, or by keyboard shortcut. New users find all shortcuts listed under the capture menu in the program window.

Screenshot Captor displays a preview window after capturing a screenshot that offers options to process the image directly. Here it is possible to print it, create a thumbnail of it, save it, copy it to the clipboard or use the send to menu to transfer it. Options are provided to bypass the preview window if it is not needed.

You can send the image to the main program window where you can process it further. Screenshot Captor offers all the tools that users except from a screenshot editor. This includes adding annotations and watermarks, highlighting or blurring areas, drawing arrows, or resizing or cropping images directly.

Screenshots can be saved in a wide variety of formats, including png and jpg, but also jpeg2000, bmp or pdf among others. The program can be configured to remove all meta data from the image. A preview is available that displays both the original image and the new version that will be saved to the system.

Screenshot Captor 3 ships with a set of new features. You can for instance configure the program to upload screenshots automatically or on-demand to image file hosting sites such as Flickr or Imageshack, or to an ftp server. Especially the scrolling window capturing tool in Screenshot Captor 3 needs to be mentioned, as it handles many scrolling windows with ease that other screenshot taking programs fail to capture.

Another feature that sets the program apart is that it is highly configurable. This includes automatic processing options, the ability to take and save screenshots directly or support for third party applications that you can send the screenshots to.

New users may feel overwhelmed at first because of the sheer size of options and menus that the program offers. Mouser has created demonstration videos that explain all the program’s key concept in a few minutes each. Especially the first video, which offers a quick overview, is recommended.

You can download the latest version of the program from the Donation Coder website. The program is compatible with all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system, from Windows 9x to the very latest version.

Verdict

Screenshot Captor is a professional screenshot taking application for Windows. It offers a rich feature set and ships with features that are usually only available in commercial applications.

Skype 5.8 For Windows Released

Microsoft today has released an update for the popular voice over IP, messaging and video calling software Skype. Skype 5.8 for Windows is currently only available on the Skype homepage and not via the program’s update checker. Existing Skype users who click on Help > Check for Updates are receiving notifications that they are running the latest version. It is likely that the updater is going to pick up the new version later today.

Skype users who try to update by downloading Skype 5.8 from the official website will notice that they need to log in on Skype before they can do so. Users who do not want to do that can download the latest (English) version from download portals such as Softpedia instead.

skype 5.8

Skype 5.8 introduces several new and improved features in the Windows client. A blog post at the Skype website provides information about those changes.

The release brings full HD video calling if you happen to own a Logitech C920 webcam and have at least 2 Mbps of upload and download speed available, beta support for Facebook audio and video calling from within Skype, and group screen sharing which allows “users to share their entire screen or a single application window with other participants on a conference call while continuing to stream video”.

The group sharing feature could open up new applications for Skype, for instance as a tool for presentations.

Skype 5.8 furthermore supports Push to Talk now which allows Skype users to set a hotkey with which they can toggle the microphone on or off. Skype users can enable the Toggle mute hotkey (Push-to-talk) under Tools > Options > Advanced > Hotkeys.

The blog post mentions two features that are not explained further. First the Skype updater service, which may indicate the move to an updating service for the Skype software from an in-software updater, and the Bing toolbar integration.

Update: Skype automatically enabled “Start Skype when I start Windows” after upgrading to the latest version. You can disable that option under Tools > Options > General Settings.

Email Client Thunderbird 10 Released

Regular readers know that Mozilla has synchronized the release schedules for both the Firefox web browser and the Thunderbird email client. Both applications share the same rapid release process, and both are usually updated at the same day.

Mozilla today, after releasing Firefox 10, has also released Thunderbird 10, a new version of the email software.

Thunderbird too is now flagging add-ons as compatible by default. Add-ons ship with minimum and maximum version compatibility information. The issue previously was that add-ons were flagged as incompatible if the author failed to update the version information in time. This made it difficulty for developers to keep their add-ons compatible with the latest releases.

Another change is the native integration of the Open Search extension in the email client. A right-click now displays an option to search for the selected term on the Internet. This is handled in the email client and not in the default system web browser.

search the web

The rendering component uses the Gecko 10 engine that the Firefox web browser uses as well.

Users who do not want their searches to open in the email client can set the preference mail.websearch.open_externally to true. This is done with a click on Tools > Options, switching to Advanced > General, clicking on Config Editor in the menu and filtering for the above preference. Just double-click it to toggle its value from false to true. Is there a way to disable web search completely? Not that I’m aware off. Maybe there is a preference but I have not found it yet.

Two new keyboard shortcuts have been added to Thunderbird 10, in addition to the changes outlined above. It is now possible to add attachments to messages with the Ctrl-Shirt-A (Command-Shift-A) shortcut. Named anchors can now be removed with Ctrl-Shift-R (Coammdn-Shift-R), and messages in the message reader and compose window can now be zoomed with the scroll wheel (Ctrl-Scroll Wheel).

Thunderbird users should have received update information by now in the email client. New users can download the latest version for all supported operating systems and languages from the Mozilla website.
