ICandy Burlesque: An Update On Classic Vegas

Las Vegas is home to some of the most sinful entertainment on earth. Everywhere you look there is something to satisfy even the darkest of desires. Topless vampires, classy exotic dancers, even a sensual adventure into the far corners of the human mind. Back in the days of "old Vegas" these types of shows ruled the theaters. Big bands, scantly clad women and knockout dance numbers. With the change in times comes a change in the style in which these shows are presented. Can a show like this be presented in such a way that it would be appropriate for anyone to see? Enter iCandy Burlesque: The Show.

Everything you would expect out of an old school burlesque style performance, tastefully done and appropriate for all audiences. By creating a show that is family friendly but still holding true to its distant relatives, it allows a new generation of show-goers to experience that old-school Vegas show feel, while still maintaining an updated image. Even the musical numbers have been updated to appeal to a more modern audience. From the burlesque classic "Let Me Entertain You" all the way to the re-done smash "Lady Marmalade" this show has it all. Even though this is considered an "adult themed" show, the tasteful presentation of it allows it to be a great time for all to enjoy. Don't get me wrong, it still sticks to its sexy roots, but it still manages to do that without having to remove the clothes of its actors. Something that is rare for a show of this style.

This well done show will still appeal to fans of more traditional burlesque shows but at the same time it will be presented so that fans of all ages will get to experience what has become a Vegas mainstay. iCandy Burlesque will take you through old-school burlesque with a modern twist that is sure to excite and entertain everyone. Want to keep your iCandy experience going? Check out the show on the weekends. After each performance the dancers escort guests to the iCandy Burlesque lounge where they can party the night away. Adobe Releases Flash Player Security Update to 11.1.102.63

Adobe today has published an update for Flash Player that brings the current version of the product to 11.1.102.63 on the desktop, and version 11.1.111.7 on Android devices. Adobe classifies the update as a priority 2 update that fixes several critical security vulnerabilities that have been discovered earlier in the product. Priority 2 is the second highest priority rating, and critical the highest severity rating.

[A priority 2] update resolves vulnerabilities in a product that has historically been at elevated risk. There are currently no known exploits. Based on previous experience, we do not anticipate exploits are imminent. As a best practice, Adobe recommends administrators install the update soon (for instance, within 30 days).

The vulnerability affects all previous versions of Adobe Flash Player for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, as well as previous versions of Flash Player for Android.

The vulnerabilities can be used by attackers to cause a crash on the target system running vulnerable versions of Flash, to take control of the affected system. Adobe recommends that users update their Flash Player version to the latest version as soon as possible to protect their system vulnerability exploits.

Flash users who do not know which version of the product they have installed, should visit Adobe’s About Flash page to find out. Flash Player needs updating if the version displayed is lower than 11.1.102.63 for a desktop system, and lower than 11.1.111.7 for Android systems.

adobe flash player version

Desktop users can visit the Get Flash Player website to download the latest version of the product from the Adobe website. Keep in mind that you need to close all open web browsers before you can complete the update of Flash Player on the system. The Google Chrome browser is updated automatically via Google Update, an update for that browser alone is not necessary.

Adobe furthermore has made available an update to Flash Player 10 users who, for whatever reason, cannot update to Flash Player 11. The update resolves the security issue on their system. It can be downloaded here.

Avast Releases Fix Update Utility For Corrupted Installations

The release of Avast 7 has caused anger and confusion in part of the security software’s user base. Especially the fact that Google Chrome was installed in a sneaky way during updates or new installations fueled criticism of the new version. Some users on the other hand reported that the application did not install or update correctly. The installation basically hangs and exits with an error message.

Especially users who try to upgrade from version 6 to 7 are affected by corrupted installations of the security software. The core issue here is that it is not possible to update the program anymore. Some users have experienced other issues as well, like crashing third party applications, slow system starts or shutdowns or related issues.

avast corrupted installation

Experienced users may have resolved the situation already by running Avast’s Software Removal Tool which uninstalls all traces of Avast software on the system. A clean install of Avast 7 runs through without problems afterwards.

Avast has released a Fix Update utility for users of Avast 6 and Avast 7 who are experiencing issues with their antivirus.

Here are the instructions on how to use the program to fix Avast on the computer

Avast 7: Run Fix Update first, then go Maintenance > Update and click on Update Program. This should resolve the issue.Avast 6: Run the Fix Update program as well. You will then be asked whether you want to update to Avast 7. Click Yes and the update will be installed. This can take a few minutes before the update completes. Restart the computer in the end to complete the update

The tool can be run on systems that are not affected by the particular issue. It will simply exit in this case telling you that the avast installation does not seem to have the problem that the fix is supposed to resolve. (via Techdows)

Blackberry Playbook OS v2 Update Due Today

It’s been delayed and delayed further, but despite no official confirmation from RIM the long-anticipated version 2 of the company’s QNX operating system for the Blackberry Playbook is due to be released today.  AMong the features on offer are native email and calendar apps, something that’s taken for granted with any other tablet operating system.  When the Playbook was first released, Rim saw the principle way to get email and calendar on the tablet would be to pair it with your Blackberry smartphone via bluetooth.  This approach wasn’t entirely successful however with a great many Playbook users being non-Blackberry phone owners.

RIM finally showed off the native email and calendar apps last month but they have still been surprisingly cagey about this operating system update, seen as a major milestone for the platform despite being mostly intended to fix and patch bugs.  The Facebook app is also rumoured to get an update however.  It’s said that the update will be availble to download from 4.01am in the USA, which would mean lunchtime or early afternoon in Europe.

The Playbook has suffered trememdously in the battles against the iPad and Google’s Android operating system, despite the poor uptake of the latter’s recent Ice Cream Sandwich OS update.  In recent weeks the price of the Playbook has dropped in many markets with many people suspecting that it was to go the same way as the HP Touchpad with a fire-sale followed by oblivion forever.  So far RIM have managed to avoid this fate with the Playbook though the company’s own market share overall is dwindling significantly, with many predicting the death of company before too long.

Other new features in the OS update reportedly include Blackberry Balance, which allows users to use their tablet for both home and work, while seperating the two when they’re either working or at home.  The feature will also apparently include additional security to protect work and business data and keep it seperate from your personal data.  This will also allow corporate users to deploy bespoke apps to users personal or work devices, with the user safe in the knowledge that while their activities online and with apps can be restricted during business hours, they are free to do whatever they like outside of work hours without their business data and files being in danger from online activities.

There will also be a Citrix client that will give users remote desktop working, even with Windows or the Mac.  Finally the Playbook will be usable as a programmable remote control for the home or in the workplace.  The aim here is to make the tablet a useful presentation device in the workplace.  As I mentioed earlier, the rest of the OS update is essentially bug fixes and patches.

If you are planning to install the operating system update when it is released, assuming the information that’s been leaked from RIM is accurate, then you should first make sure you have your device backed up.  You can do this in the Blackberry Desktop Software for the tablet.

So will you be downloading and installing the Playbook v2 OS today?  Are you looking forward to the native email and calendar apps or perhaps another feature?  Why not tell us in the comments below.

Thunderbird 10.0.1 Update Released

Mozilla has just released an update to the Thunderbird email client, shortly after releasing a similar update for the Firefox web browser that brought the version to 10.0.1. Thunderbird 10.0.1 is a stability and security release, and as thus a recommended update for all users of the messaging software.

The update is already available, and Thunderbird users can either download it from the official developer website or use their client’s internal updater to download and apply it. A click on Help > About Thunderbird performs the update check and displays the current version of the program in a small window.

thunderbird 10.0.1

Lets take a look at the changes in Thunderbird 10.0.1.

The security advisory page over at Mozilla offers details on the issue that has been fixed in the update. It affected not only the email client, but also Thunderbird and SeaMonkey as well.

Mozilla developers Andrew McCreight and Olli Pettay found that ReadPrototypeBindings will leave a XBL binding in a hash table even when the function fails. If this occurs, when the cycle collector reads this hash table and attempts to do a virtual method on this binding a crash will occur. This crash may be potentially exploitable.

The change log lists several fixes to improve stability without going into further detail on the subject. Sören Hentzschel mentioned a crash in the client’s importer when importing mails from Microsoft Outlook.

The release of Thunderbird 10.0.1 comes less than two weeks after the last update that moved the version of the email client to 10. Thunderbird 10 introduced a new right-click search option to search directly from within Thunderbird. Results are either displayed directly in Thunderbird in new tabs, or in the default web browser whichever is preferred.

Other changes include new keyboard shortcuts and an extension compatibility change that should reduce the issues that Thunderbird users have in this regard.

Mozilla, developers of the popular Firefox web browser, have just released an update for the browser’s stable branch that moves the version to 10.0.1. The release may come as a surprise to users of Firefox 10, who were updated to that version only ten days ago.

This is not the first occurrence that a critical update is released shortly after a major version upgrade of the web browser. Similar updates had to be delivered after the release of Firefox 9 and Firefox 8.

Firefox 10.0.1 fixes critical issues that came to light shortly after Firefox 10 had been released to the public. This includes at least one startup crash when the browser is opened by the user, and one Java related issue that is causing text fields to hang in the browser. Firefox users can resolve that issue manually by minimizing or resizing the browser. The patch released later today will fix the issues permanently though.

The product planning summary lists additional issues that the developers are currently looking into. This includes issues with AVG’s SafeSearch extension that is blocking the enter key from functioning correctly in the browser’s address bar. While it it possible to click on the go button to be taken to the site, it is a issue that the developers want to resolve as quickly as possible.

Other issues mentioned in the summary are additional crashes, and incompatibilities with Norton products and RealPlayer Video Downloader.

The release is already available on the Mozilla release ftp server and on third party download portals such as Softpedia. It is likely that the new version will be pushed to all users later today. At that point it will also be offered for download on the Mozilla website and as an update in the browser.

Please note that both the standard Firefox 10 build and Firefox 10 ESR will receive the update to Firefox 10.0.1.

Reset Firefox Feature Gets An Update

When it comes to repairing the Firefox web browser because of issues that you experience while using it, you are often in for a rather long winded troubleshooting process. Less tech savvy users might try to re-install the browser only to find out that reinstallation likely did not resolve the issues at all. Others might start Firefox in Safe Mode to reset the user preferences to Firefox defaults or a migration of their existing profile to a new one.

Creating a new profile usually resolves issues as most are user profile related and not browser related. The process however is complicated and not as straightforward as it can be.

And this is without doubt the core reason why Mozilla plans to integrate a reset feature into the browser. The idea here is to reset the browser by creating a new profile and migrating core user data to that profile. Something that would take half an hour or longer to complete can now be completed with a few clicks in the browser’s user interface.

The reset Firefox option can be accessed in three different ways according to the updated Mozilla wiki document on the topic.

During installation, either by automatic detection or user request, that the new installation is actually an attempt to repair the web browser.Three crashes in a row on startup will trigger a prompt that offers to start the browser in safe mode or to reset Firefox.Actively clicking on the Reset Firefox option on the Troubleshooting page in the browser.

reset firefox

Once the command is invoked, it will run a number of tasks:

Confirm with the user what actions are about to be takenCreate a new user profileMigrate user data: Bookmarks, History, Saved passwords, Autofill form data, Extensions and themesReset toolbars and controlsReset all user preferences to Firefox default/li> Disable all add-ons and switch to the default themeThen Firefox will restart using the new profile.

Add-ons and themes are migrated to the new profile, but deactivated in the process. This could cause some confusion but may be necessary as add-ons may be the cause for the experienced issues. Users can go into the add-ons manager to re-enable the add-ons and their favorite theme.

Advanced users may also need to make changes to the advanced user configuration again as everything is reset to factory defaults.

Mockups have been posted which are attached below.

The resetting feature is still in development, and it is not clear when it will be integrated into the Firefox browser. Check out the wiki entry for updates. (via Techdows)

An Update On The Website I Bought Last Year

In Why Website Investments Are Better Than Stock Market Investments I mentioned that I bought several websites last year as an investment. When it comes to buying websites, there are always two options: First you can continue running and improving the site to earn monthly revenue from it. That’s great unless it requires to much of your precious time. Passive sites, that is sites that require little to no attention at all are best for this as you can spend your precious time elsewhere without jeopardizing the monthly revenue.

The second option is to buy sites to flip them later which is called site flipping. You buy low, can optionally improve the site to increase its traffic or revenue, to sell it for a profit later on.

My intention with the site that I bought for $23,000 last year was to stabilize its earnings, reap in the rewards for a year to sell it for a profit after 12 months. I’d like to post an update on what happened to that site and where it stands now.

Here is the revenue that the site generated in the last months:

July: $3471.80August: $3384.60September: $1957.62October: $1774.65November: $1804.44December: $2209.74

The total is $14602.87 for the last six months of operation. Not all of it is profit though, more about that later. You may have noticed that the revenue dropped considerable in September, this can be attributed to the fact that it is a seasonal product that is more popular in spring and early summer.

You need to subtract your expenses from the revenue. With site hosting and the domain name at about $10 per month, and a monthly SEO campaign for $399, total expenses came down to $2454 in that time. The net revenue therefor was $12148.87 in the last six months.

Since I have paid $23,000 for the site, I made more than half of my investment back at the six month mark. If thinks pick up in the coming months, I may make all the money back in the next five months. Everything is profit afterwards.

earnings The site earns 10% from those sales.

My main intention then is to sell the website again for a higher price than I paid. Why a higher price? Because revenue history pays an important role. Buyers pay more for sites with a larger revenue history. If a site’s earnings have been steady for a year, it is more worth than a site who earned money for just one month. It is a risk factor that needs to be part of any calculation.

My intention is to sell the site for 24 times its monthly profit which would be around $50,000 which would all be profit. I may have to use a website broker for that who usually charge you between 10% and 15% for their service. This leaves me with $42,5000 to $45,000 in profit which is not bad for a year and an initial investment of $23,000.

Risks

Investments always come with certain risks, a stock may tank, a bank may file for bankruptcy, a house may be destroyed by an act of god. You face two core risks when it comes to web investments.

1. The seller may have not revealed all the information to you. Let me give you a basic example. A seller not mentioning that part of the site’s traffic was paid for, which for obvious reasons should have been included in the site’s evaluation. You may be able to settle this with the seller directly, but more often than not in court.2. Acts of god, or more precisely Google or other traffic sources the site depends on. Algorithm changes, blackhat attacks against the web property or issues with a script the site depends on can turn revenue from normal levels to zero. While you could try to get those issues resolves, it would mean that you had to spend additional money to do so (Unless you are a do-it-yourself webmaster. Even then you’d have to spend your time fixing the site instead of using it for other projects of yours).

Check out 8 Essential Tips For Web Investors for additional tips and information.

Closing Words

Site flipping can be highly profitable, only comparable in revenue to high risk stock market investments. Most of the risks can be mitigated on the other hand with a careful evaluation.

I plan to re-invest the money into one or two web properties after the purchase.

You may also be wondering why I do not keep the site instead and let it earn the $2000 for me every month. The reason is simple: It would have to earn that amount of money for two years to even the sales price. In those two years, I could try and quadruple the money with two new investment cycles instead, provided I find the right web properties to invest in. Instead of having one site earn $2000, I’d end up with sites earning $8000 per month. after two years.

Microsoft Releases First 2012 Security Update

Microsoft today has released seven security related bulletins that fix issues in the Windows operating system and in Microsoft’s Developer Tools. One bulletin has received the maximum severity rating of critical, the highest available rating, while the remaining six bulletins have all received a rating of important, the third highest rating.

It is interesting to note that the severity rating of the first bulletin is critical on Windows XP and Vista, while only important on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. When you look at all bulletins you will notice that Windows XP is affected by all, Vista by five and Windows 7 by four of the vulnerabilities addressed in the bulletins.

The Security Bulletins have just been posted on Microsoft’s Technet website. Here is this month’s summary with links to each security bulletin.

MS12-004 – Vulnerabilities in Windows Media Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2636391) – This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted media file. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.MS12-001 – Vulnerability in Windows Kernel Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (2644615) – This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to bypass the SafeSEH security feature in a software application. An attacker could then use other vulnerabilities to leverage the structured exception handler to run arbitrary code. Only software applications that were compiled using Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003 can be used to exploit this vulnerability.MS12-002 – Vulnerability in Windows Object Packager Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2603381) – This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a legitimate file with an embedded packaged object that is located in the same network directory as a specially crafted executable file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.MS12-003 – Vulnerability in Windows Client/Server Run-time Subsystem Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2646524) – This security update resolves one privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008. All supported editions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are not affected by this vulnerability.

The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to an affected system and runs a specially crafted application. The attacker could then take complete control of the affected system and install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. This vulnerability can only be exploited on systems configured with a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean system locale.

MS12-005 – Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2584146) – This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Microsoft Office file containing a malicious embedded ClickOnce application. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.MS12-006 – Vulnerability in SSL/TLS Could Allow Information Disclosure (2643584) – This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0. This vulnerability affects the protocol itself and is not specific to the Windows operating system. The vulnerability could allow information disclosure if an attacker intercepts encrypted web traffic served from an affected system. TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2, and all cipher suites that do not use CBC mode are not affected.MS12-007 – Vulnerability in AntiXSS Library Could Allow Information Disclosure (2607664) – This security update resolves one privately reported vulnerability in the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting (AntiXSS) Library. The vulnerability could allow information disclosure if a an attacker passes a malicious script to a website using the sanitization function of the AntiXSS Library. The consequences of the disclosure of that information depend on the nature of the information itself. Note that this vulnerability would not allow an attacker to execute code or to elevate the attacker’s user rights directly, but it could be used to produce information that could be used to try to further compromise the affected system. Only sites that use the sanitization module of the AntiXSS Library are affected by this vulnerability.

The updates are already available on Windows Update. The easiest way to open the updating tool is to click on the start menu orb and select Windows Update from the program listing there.
