Chill, the Video Pinterest?

With the success of an idea on the web come clones, and services that refine the idea, or find a niche that is not yet dominated by the first mover. The success of Pinterest, which certainly was surprising to some, has sparked the creation of Pinterest-like sites for all kinds of things. We have seen music and video sites adopt the system the system in masses for instance in past months.

Chill is one of the latest sites. It is a video pinboard community where logged in users can post videos that they have stumbled upon, comment on and like videos, and create video groups like The Ultimate Steve Jobs Collection.

Even the posting of videos on the site works in the same way. Just drag and drop the Chill bookmarklet to the browser’s bookmarks bar, and click on it when you have found a video that you want to post on the site. You can also click on the post a video button on the Chill website directly.

Users can currently only register if they link their Facebook account to the service. While that is a comfortable option for some, others may not want to link their account or may not even have one.

Since it is possible to post videos on Pinterest, the main question is if Chill is unique enough to survive on its own. And Pinterest is not the only site the service has to compete with. There are also regular video hosting sites, like YouTube or Vimeo that it has to compete with as well.

When you look at the features it offers, you end up with a site that allows you to post videos into categories, make them available to others, and use the site as a video discovery service.

ReadWriteWeb notes that Chill has received over 500,000 unique visitors in its first month, which definitely is an impressive figure. It is however too early to tell if the site will continue to grow in the next months, or if it is one of those one-hit wonders that you happen to see fairly often on the web.

Have you tried Chill yet? If so, what’s your impression of the service?

Make The Most Out Of Pinterest With These Browser Add-ons

Web browser add-ons can improve your Pinterest experience significantly. Let me give you a quick overview of what the service is about. Pinterest lets you pin photos and videos to online pinboards. These are publicly accessible, and all Pinterest users can comment on them, share them or pin them to their pinboards as well. Links to the original site the photos or videos were found on are retained, which makes it a visual bookmarking service as well.

There are three options to pin photos or videos to your own pinboard. You can use the bookmarklet and run it on the page that contains the photo or image, paste the web address of the page on the Pinterest site into a form, or pin an item that has been posted by another Pinterest user.

When you look at browser extensions, you will notice that Google Chrome got the bulk of it, while both Firefox and Opera only one each. Lets take a look at the add-ons:

Pin It Buttons – Instead of having to use the bookmarklet, these extensions add a button to the browser that you can click on to pin a photo or video on that website. Chrome: One Click Pinterest Button, Opera: Pinterextension

Right-click Pinning – These add a right-click context menu option to pin the selected item to one of your Pinterest pinboards. Chrome: Pinterest Right click, Firefox: Unofficial Pinterest Addon

Keyboard shortcuts – Adds a shortcut to pin items on a page with a keyboard shortcut. Chrome: Pin It!

Image Zooming – Lets you zoom in on images right on the Pinterest website without having to click on the item. Works similar to Hover Zoom. Chrome: Pinterest Zoom

Pin Screenshots – Lets you pin screenshots of web pages that you are currently on, or upload photos from your desktop to pin those. Chrome: Screen 2 Pin

Closing Words It is interesting to note that there is no userscript, and only one Firefox add-on available for a popular service such as Pinterest. Google Chrome on the other hand has been blessed with extensions in comparisons. Is it because many developers are using that browser now? What’s your opinion here? Also, let me know if you come across other add-ons for Pinterest. And if you are not currently a user, you can grab your Pinterest invites here.

By now you have probably heard about the next big thing that is currently taking off on the Internet called Pinterest. It basically lets you create pinboards online, and combines those with social networking features like friends and a commenting system. Users of the site can either use a bookmarklet to select new photos or videos that they want to add to one of their pinboards, or on-site functionality to do the same.

At its core, it is nothing more than a photo and video sharing community that uses pinboards instead of photo albums for the sorting. One of the core difference is that each pin links to the original site, which makes it more of a cross breed between a photo sharing and bookmarking service.

Visitors can check on all the pins that users of the site have made. Popular categories include recipes, fashion and clothing, as well as people, location and furniture.

One of the things you can use Pinterest for, besides keeping a growing collection of interesting things you find online, is to get inspiration. This can be fashion related for instance, or for new recipes that you would like to try out once you see a yummy photo of the food on the site.

Pinterest is an invite only site right now. Interested users can leave their email address to get an invite eventually, or find someone who is already using the site to get invited this way. Since I’m already using the site, I figured it would be nice if I’d offer to invite you to join Pinterest. Just leave a comment below using a valid email address, and you can be sure to receive an invitation in less than 24 hours (usually a lot faster than that).

I will send out invitations for as long as I’m able to. I’m not sure if you are only allowed to invite a select number of people.
