Opera 7.5 Mini for Android introduces new social Smart Page
If you are not using Google Chrome as your browser on your Android smartphone you may have at least looked at Opera’s offerings for the operating system. According to the statistics on Google Play, the browser has been installed on at least 10 million devices. Opera Mini 7.5 has just been released for Android phones running Android version 1.5 or higher introducing a new Smart Page and other features in the version.
You are probably wondering why Opera is making available two different browser versions, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. The main difference is how pages are rendered using the browser. Opera Mini uses Opera servers to render pages while Opera Mobile renders pages on the smartphone directly. This makes Opera Mini ideal if a smartphone’s hardware is not the fastest as it removes the time it takes before the pages are displayed on the screen.
Back to Opera Mini 7.5. Smart Page is a new social tab in the browser that taps right into popular social networking sites to keep you updated with the latest activities. The browser supports Facebook, Twitter and vKontakte, and once you have signed in on the browser you receive the latest updates right on the page without having to visit the sites directly.

Another addition is the My News section which displays news from a variety of sources based on your browsing habits or your preferences. Opera Mini furthermore displays link suggestions on the start page based “on the region your Android phone is located” in.
The speed dial feature is just a tab away in the browser, and since data gets compressed when you use Opera Mini, you benefit from faster browsing and reduced bandwidth usage, which is especially helpful for people who pay per Megabyte or with a plan that is only providing them with a low amount of free bandwidth per month.
Opera Mini 7.5 is available for download on Google Play.
Here is a video by Opera Software highlighting the new features of Opera Mini’s Smart Page feature.

Opera Software preparing Opera for Windows 8
Third party software developers who want their programs to function properly under Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8 need to focus their attention on two new areas. The start page is the first and without doubt the most difficulty to work with as it is restricting apps significantly that run here. The second area is touch, which is one of the improved features of Windows 8, and if you take the hardware announcements of this year’s IFA as an indicator, one of the main focuses of hardware manufacturers when it comes to Windows 8 powered devices.
Browser developers like Mozilla or Google have already started their work on a version of their browser for the operating system’s modern user interface, formerly known as Metro. Opera Software on the other hand kept quite until now, which may be attributed to the much smaller nature of the company, different priorities, or both.
The company has released a new snapshot of its upcoming Opera 12.50 web browser today, and one of the new features that it adds to the table is better support for touch-based devices running on Windows 7 or Windows 8. The changelog lists four touch-specific features that the company has integrated into the snapshot.
Add support for pinch to zoomAdd support for Inertia scrolling of UIAdd support for Inertia page scrollingAdd support for touch based drag and drop of UI elements – with inertiaThe initial improvements are for the classic version of Opera, as opposed to the modern ui version of it. Opera users that use touch-capable devices can use the newest build to scroll and move web pages and elements in Opera using touch, including touch zoom and inertial scrolling.

Opera 12.50 is only available as a development build right now, and while that may not be an issue at all, you may experience issues such as crashes, freezes and maybe even data loss as a consequence. It is therefor recommended to backup the operating system and browser before you install the new version.
Interested users can download the latest Opera snapshot build from the Opera Desktop Team blog website. What’s interesting in this regard is that Opera seems to – at least – think about creating an Opera app for the start page of Windows 8.

Asa Dotzler Recommends Opera For Firefox 3.6 Users Who Don’t Want To Upgrade
If you are a Firefox 3.6 user you know by now that support for that branch of the web browser will end on April 24, 2012. As it stands now,
With Firefox 3.6 out of the picture, Firefox users still using the branch are asked by Mozilla to either update to the current stable version of the browser, which is Firefox 11 at the time of writing, or the
What about Firefox users who do not want to upgrade their browser to a newer supported version?
Happy to try to answer any questions you have. Oh, and if you’re a Windows 2000 user and you simply cannot upgrade your PC to a more modern Windows version, I’m sure the good folks over at
Opera will be happy to help you out. Moving to Opera means you’ll not only get continued security updates, but you’ll also be able to enjoy a modern browser experience.
You may ask yourself why he is only referring to Windows 2000 users in the paragraph above. The reason for him doing so is that Mozilla decided to discontinue support for Windows 2000 starting with the release of Firefox 13 in June 2012.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that our minimum supported Windows version will change from Windows 2000 to Windows XP SP2 in Firefox 13. We never change minimum requirements lightly, but this support change allows us to significantly improve Firefox performance on Windows by using a more modern build system. Windows XP users are advised to
update to the latest service pack, and Windows 2000 users should consider upgrading ahead of the June release of Firefox 13.
What he does not take into account is users who do not want to switch to newer versions of the browser despite the fact that they could.
It is interesting that Asa Dotzler recommends Opera. Many users would have probably guessed that Chrome was was a more likely candidate, but like Firefox will soon do, Chrome is not supporting any Windows operating system before Windows XP SP2. Users working with Windows XP and newer systems on the other hand can switch to Google Chrome instead, which the majority that do not upgrade the Firefox browser will probably do.
There you have it. If you are still running Firefox 3, you are asked to update the browser to a newer version, or switch to Opera. Which will it be for you?

Responses so far:
I don’t see a reason why someone would move to Opera/Chrome instead of a newer version of Firefox. If you are worried that your addons will no longer work in the new version then I must tell you that you will still lose those addons if you move to another browser.
Much has changed over the last year and Firefox 11 is much faster and lighter than Firefox 4. I recommend everyone to start using it.
I don’t agree. Firefox 11 is not faster than FF 3.6 with optimized network. And it’s not lighter. They keep adding things that should be add-ons. I started using Firefox because I could choose the functionalities I wanted in my browser. This is not anymore.
The lighter question – if you are referring to memory management – is arguably not true. I was amazed but very happy to see a comment reply from Nicholas Nethercote – the chief of the MemShrink project – recently that admitted Firefox 4's memory management was a big backward step. Furthermore he stated that it would be arou,d Firefox 10 or 11 when the status of memory management would get back to Firefox 3 levels. Well, both 10 and 11 are now available so (with several exceptions I must admit), Firefox is now as ‘light’ as it ever has been.
The exceptions are likely to be the same as they were with Firefox 3. Namely extensions about which if Mozilla was honest, they would admit were a balls-up from the start of the Firefox project , so much so that they’ve spent the last year or so building an entirely new extensions framework called Jetpack.
So what is wrong with extensions? Well in a word: memory. Surprised? LOL. Basically with the original extension authoring methods – let’s call them XUL – Mozilla never built in any sort of memory management. From day one of Firefox, could you see what extension is using up a heap of memory and disable it or ask the author to fix it? No! Can you do that now? Erm, not really, though in theory it’s supposed to be kinda available with Jetpack-based extensions. There’s one other big problem with extensions: zombie compartments! A compartment is a section of memory Firefox is using. Essentially any (and a whole lot of them do) extension can cause compartments of memory to remain used even when the tab that was associated with that compartment is long gone (closed). This is a big problem. So far the effort to rid the top 100 most popular extensions of this problem is going slowly.
EuroScept1C says:Currently the latest Nightly is simply INCREDIBLE! And the best yet to come… Ion Monkey, Azure HWA. We got Pipeline, better Scrolling, more “snappy” browser with time and right now the Australis theme which still is being cooked is clean and beautiful. Newtab Page, new Homepage, Memory-usage improvements and countless fixes/optimisations in background. The dudes who still think Fx 3.6 as the guy above, indeed, let him go at Opera.
I think Chrome helped a lot and forced Mozilla to speed up greatly. First time I’m so excited about Fx. I was always using Fx as a passive user and because of reasons like ABP etc… Now, clearly I use it because of what exactly Fx is.
I switched to Firefox 3 _from_ Opera. Now I run optimized FF build Palemoon 11, it works well and I don’t want to switch back to Opera :)
Still don’t get, what was so bad in FF 4+ to remain on 3.
Hasn’t Mozilla fired that arsehole Asa yet???
Probably too late by now.
When the “product director for the Firefox desktop browser” recommends a different browser (for whatever reasons), you got problems. Big ones.
As much as I agree Asa deserves criticism, I don’t think this is a good basis for it. The number of Windows 2000 users would be minimal. Most things Mozilla are also still group decisions, Asa would more than likely just be the messenger. Whilst I agree that messenger or not, people should be accountable when the message is just wrong, not sure criticism of Asa on this one is all that valid.
After all, basically this article is quite biased against Mozilla despite mentioning, almost sheepishly, that the current darling of the browser world – Chrome – does exactly the same thing as Mozilla: no support for Windows 2000.
In essence is it reasonable to hammer Asa for Mozilla’s decision to copy Google policy re Windows 2000 support? Hmm, not really. Is it reasonable to hammer Asa for arguably trying to be more helpful to users than Google is (presuming Google doesn’t suggest an alternative)? Hmmm, not really.
if it ain't broke, don't... says:what does opera asa suggest i run on my dos3 xt?!1! /trollish
Well, I do not need to switch, since I´m already using Opera ;)
Congratulations. You and your 4 colleagues must be very happy with Opera :)
After years of spreading FUD against Opera’s capabilities, speed and standards compliance, and also denying that Fx “borrowed” almost every new feature (pre-Chrome) from the Norwegian browser, Asa is now recommending it? Hell must’ve frozen over. He’s a tool and no responsible tech writer should give him any attention.
He couldve recommended IE9. Or worse, Chrome!
I am running Firefox 3.6.28. And it’s a beautiful sight indeed.
The best version of Firefox to tweak and tweaked it is to the max.
I run Firefox 11.0 too side by side simultaneously with Firefox 3.6.28.
Not all the time. I am taking my time building Firefox 11 to match
what I have customized in Firefox 3 and trying to mirror those
as best as possible often with new scripts and add-ons.
So for me I use Firefox 3 as a working template.
As for Opera, it is a good out of the box browser.
For people who do not usually make changes,
usually some IE users, Opera makes sense.
For anyone who likes to customize moving
up the Firefox food chain makes more sense.
As a side note I find Firefox 3 as fast as 11.
I suspect the internal plumbing has changed
considerably incorporating much of the new code.
Support for 2000 ended almost 2 years ago and those still running it are a minority of advanced users since a strict SRP would be needed to avoid exploitation of unpatched vulnerabilities. They’re undoubtedly aware of Opera. So I don’t see a need for Asa to comment at all in this case.
As for users of XP SP2 or newer, I see little reason not to upgrade to the current FF build. Most of the new taxing animations, features etc. can be disabled via about:config and most Add-ons have been updated or at worst alternatives are available. If you don’t like the rapid release cycle then ESR is available. Mozilla has done an excellent job of trying to please a variety of users and this is how Asa should have handled it IMO.
Opera 11.50 is as terrible as Firefox 11, not to mention Chrome, which is the worst. I have switched to SeaMonkey, which is far better and far more customizable than Firefox. SeaMonkey has not adopted the preposterous numbering scheme of Firefox and its GUI is not ruined. Unfortunately, not all Firefox add-ons are compatible with SeaMonkey. SeaMonkey is not very good but is the best browser right now. I dream of a browser that does not suck.
Opera 11.61 is the latest, which will be replaced today or tomorrow with Opera 11.62.

YouTube AdsFree For Opera Removes Advertisement On YouTube
Google in recent years has started to add advertisement to the popular video hosting platform YouTube. Ads on YouTube nowadays come in a variety of ways, from sponsored channels to banner ads or in-video advertisement. The video hosting site currently supports two different kinds of in-video ads. First a video ad before the actual video requested by the user, and then ad overlays when the requested video is playing on the screen.
These ads either benefit YouTube and Google completely, or if revenue sharing is enabled, the original uploader of the video as well.
A percentage of the site’s user base may prefer to bypass ads to fully enjoy the contents without overlay images being displayed to them while the video is playing.
YouTube AdsFree is an Opera extension that removes the majority of ads on YouTube. The latest version of the extension blocks the ad servers so that the ads cannot be displayed anymore on the screen. The description lists popup ads as the main ad form that gets blocked. These are the overlay ads when you start watching the videos.

The extension furthermore blocks full window ads and promoted ads on YouTube and on websites who have embedded the videos. There is also an option available to remove branded banners, for instance on the VEVO channel, from being displayed on YouTube.
It is not really clear if the ad blocker covers 100% of ads, or if some ad forms remain on the site. While I personally have not seen any video ads before the actual video, it could be that these ads are still shown on YouTube.
Opera users who would like to try out YouTube AdsFree can install the latest version of the extension on the Opera Extensions website.
If you are not using Opera as your main browser, you may be interested in this guide that explains how to skip ads on YouTube.

Opera Mobile 12, Mini Next Relased
Norwegian based Opera Software has just released Opera Mobile 12 and Opera Mini Next. Unlike on the desktop, where the Opera browser does not get much traction, it is Opera who is the leading browser on mobile devices.
Opera maintains two different mobile browser versions. Opera Mobile, which has just been released in version 12, is a full web browser that is installed locally on the phone. Opera Mini sports all the features of Opera Mobile, with the main difference that the rendering engine is not installed locally, but on Opera servers.
Opera Mobile 12 for Android and Symbian has already been released. The new version is available on Google’s Android market, and on the Opera Mobile website.

Both versions of Opera Mobile 12 include new features, of which most are directed towards better HTML5 compatibility:
Ragnarok, our HTML5 parser, for better web apps and increased compatibility with websites.ECMAScript 5.1 for those who are too damn groovy for JavaScript.Orientation SupportFor Android only, support for camera use in the browser using the same, newer, getUserMedia syntax as Opera desktop Labs.CSS3 radial gradients and the fabled -o-double-rainbow.CORS (cross-origin resource sharing). For Android only, hardware-accelerated WebGL for all things 3D and web. With WebGL on mobile, it’ll be even easier to make games cross platform and distribute.
A set of demos, called Shiny Demos, has been released by Opera to demonstrate the browser’s feature set. Opera Software furthermore noted that the Opera Mobile Emulator, a web based emulator for the browser, will be updated in the next weeks to reflect the changes in Opera Mobile 12.
Opera software has released Opera Mini 7 for Apple iOS devices. The new version is available in Apple’s Appstore. Opera Mini is now also available in a Next version, a preview version of the mobile browser. Opera users on Android, Blackberry and S60, or on devices supporting Java, can point their smartphones to m.opera.com/next to install Opera Mini Next on their device.
You can read the full announcement about the new versions on the Opera website.

How To Change, Disable Opera Speed Dial
The question came up here whether it is possible to disable Opera’s built-in Speed Dial feature. Speed Dial displays a number of websites or Speed Dial extensions on the browser’s new tab page. Speed Dial was initially designed as the means to quickly access popular sites right away from the new tab page without having to enter the site’s name first or select the site from the bookmarks. Other browser vendors have started to integrate similar options into their browsers (the last to do are Mozilla with Firefox natively).
Speed Dial extensions are a relative new feature of Opera that allows users to install extensions to display dynamic contents on the browser’s new tab page.
Opera users who want to disable the new tab page, for instance to speed up the opening of new tabs in the browser or because they simply do not use the feature, can disable Speed Dial. The option to do so is however not listed in the options, but in Opera’s advanced configuration listing.

The easiest way to open the preference is to load opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialState in the Opera address bar. This should put the focus on the Speed Dial State preference in opera:config.

To change Opera’s Speed Dial functionality or disable it, simply change the value of the parameter. Here are all values and their effect.
0 – This hides the Speed Dial on the new tab page. A Show Speed Dial link is displayed in the lower right corner of the screen. When you click on it, you see the standard Speed Dial tab page again.1 – The standard view mode.2 – Read only mode. This blocks all changes to the Speed Dial display, useful for Kiosk mode for instance.3 – A value of 3 disables Opera’s Speed Dial feature. A blank page is displayed instead. If you want to disable Opera Speed Dial, change the parameter’s value to 3 and click on the Save button after scrolling down. The changes take effect immediately and without restart of the browser.

Opera 11.61 Has Been Released
Opera Software has just released a new version of the Opera desktop browser bringing the stable channel of the browser to version 11.61. Opera users should receive update notifications in the browser, those who do not want to wait for them to pop up can run a manual update check the following way: A click on Opera > Help > Check for Updates runs a manual check for updates.
The browser should pick up the new version information from the server and display an update window right away. A click on Download and Install updates the browser to the latest version.

Opera 11.61 is a stability and security upgrade, which makes it a recommended update for all Opera users. Two security issues are fixed in the new version, one that allowed manipulation of framed content to allow cross-site scripting, and another were script events “could be used to reveal the presence of local files”.
The change log lists about 50 additional changes and fixes that went into the new version of the browser. This includes several crash related fixes, including the following ones:
Crash when clicking “Use master password to protect saved passwords” checkboxOccasional crash when clicking a link or opening a new tabOpera crashes when closing a tab that has the Star Menu openedOpera crashes on updating mail from version 9.27Crash in host resolver when closing browser after loading large number of tabs simultaneouslyInterested users can access all change logs on this page. Opera 11.61 has been released for all supported operating systems. New users and those who do not want to use the internal updater can download the latest version of the browser from the official Opera download page. It is suggested to update as soon as possible to fix the security vulnerabilities in the browser.
