Shumway: Mozilla-backed Virtual Flash SWF Technology

The Shumway project tries to do the latter. It is officially backed by Mozilla but community-driven, and aims to create a technology that can interpret Flash contents without “native code assistance”. This basically means a technology that can display Flash contents in the browser even if Flash is not installed on the computer.

This sounds familiar to Mozilla’s pdf.js project where the organization created a PDF reader for Firefox that is purely based on JavaScript, HTML and CSS. The PDF reader has been integrated into nightly versions of the browser. As far as Shumway goes, it will take some time before we are going to see working prototypes of the project.

And while integration with Firefox is possible, it is not a dead-given at this point in development as the developers note.

Creating a pdf renderer and a Flash interpreter are two different beasts, with the latter being more complicated than the former. To give one example: Once you have rendered the pdf document in the browser, you do not really have to take performance into consideration any longer. With Flash, especially when it comes to interactive elements or games, performance is always an issue.It is a complex beast that the developers of Shumway have to tackle, and it is not really clear yet if it is possible to create a 100% compatible version in the end.

Shumway is by no means the only project that aims to create an alternative to Adobe Flash. For Linux, there is Lightspark and Gnash, and Google too has created a Flash SWF to HTMl5 converter called Swiffy.

For Mozilla, the idea makes sense, considering that the company is not in the same boat as Google or Microsoft that both have access to Flash’s source code to implement the technology natively into its browsers. For Mozilla this meant no Flash support under Windows 8 Metro, and that’s exactly what Shumway will take care of.

Kaspersky Releases KIS Technology Preview For Windows 8

2012 is a special year for security software companies like Kaspersky, as they not only have to deliver their yearly updates to their customer base, but also make sure that their products are compatible with Microsoft’s soon to be released operating system Windows 8.

Kaspersky today has released a technology preview of Kasperksy Internet Security 2013 that has been specifically designed for Microsoft’s new operating system. Beta users should not confuse the release with the previously released KIS 2013 Beta for previous Windows operating systems.

The 143 Megabyte download includes the full Internet Security 2013 product for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 8. The product will be automatically activated for 90 days after the day of installation on the system.

The company notes that “the software is distributed as is”, and that it “may be unstable”, which indicate that it is a beta product aimed at sorting out as many of the bugs that the testers find.

The download page does not reveal many information about new and improved features in this particular version. According to the page, the product’s speed has been improved significantly and will not “reduce PC performance” anymore. The only other changes mentioned are integration between the KIS Technology Preview and the Windows Security Center, and support for new security features of the Windows 8 operating system.

Kaspersky has created a new support forum for beta users to report bugs and exchange information.

Kaspersky is not the only company that is readying their product line for Windows 8. Avast in late February released this year’s security lineup with full Windows 8 support.

Should you install a beta security product? That depends. It may make sense if your company or you are running the latest Kaspersky versions and you want to make sure that the upcoming version is compatible with other software running on the systems. I’d otherwise suggest you skip the beta and select a software that is already available as a final product.

Update: My first try to install Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 failed miserably. The installer prompted for a reboot to complete the installation, but there was no sign that the security software was installed after the reboot. The Kaspersky folders where there, but there was no process running in the background, no system tray icon or any other indicator that the program had been installed.

The reason for this was a restart prompt in the middle of installation. I first assumed that it was a prompt by the installer to finish the installation after reboot. This apparently was not the case. You need to select Reboot Later when the prompt comes up to avoid the same issue. (via Techdows)

As the next twelve to twenty four months goes on there will come more and they will be even more commonplace in portable computing devices than they are now.  Windows 8 supports more types of sensor than ever before too with technologies such as Kinect, NFC and more being integrated directly into the platform.  But what is this going to do for the prices of the computers that we buy and is it even affordable to do so?

The latest rumour is that ASUS is testing Kinect sensors built into the bezel of laptops.  This type of integration won’t come as a surprise to many people and it’s only to be expected.  This type of technology isn’t cheap however and integrating it into a laptop will come at a cost penalty.  This is also at a time when PC makers are telling us that the profit margins on PCs and laptops are now so tight that they’re beginning to focus on the high-end computing devices such as ultrabooks in order to get us to part with more cash.

My own laptop contains a four-point capacitive touch screen, 3G SIM card slot, drop-sensing accelerometer, fingerprint reader, TPM chip and GPS.  It’s a high-end model yes, but when you think about where consumers are now with technology it’s likely that people will want to get these types of devices, along with Kinect, already integrated with their new computers, monitors and laptops, and that PC makers will capitalise on this fact to hike prices and push people towards buying even more expensive computers that improve their profit margins and balance sheets.

To be honest I firmly believe that some of these sensors are pretty much essential for work in the modern age.  3G/4G is one such example with mobile broadband now so ubiquitous.  GPS is also something that’s extremely useful in a mobile device and security systems such as biometric fingerprint readers and Trusted Platform Module chips are now essential for any business laptop.

Then we have to face the fact that by the time Windows 8 launches or at least early in 2013, over 80% of new laptops will ship with a multi-touch screen.  Next year’s consumer electronics show will be full of such devices and laptops packed with sensors and NFC readers of all description.  Each will have a use, every last one will be justifiable, and all will be more expensive than they are today.
