Park Cursor Aside Moves The Mouse Cursor When You Start Typing

Have you ever had issues with the mouse cursor being in the way when you started to type on your computer? Since you usually activate the text field with the mouse, for instance on websites, you often end up with the mouse cursor being in the way. With the mouse cursor blocking some characters in your text, you sometimes need to move it around, for instance before you start editing the text that you cannot see because of the cursor.

I reviewed Auto Hide Mouse Cursor back in February here on Ghacks, which automatically hid the mouse cursor after some time of inactivity. While that sounds very handy when watching videos for instance, it also offered a solution when using the keyboard on the computer. The program hid the mouse cursor on mouse inactivity, and let you use the keyboard and other input devices as usual.

Park Cursor Aside is another free program for that purpose. It automatically moves the mouse cursor to a designated position on the screen as soon as you start typing. The default setting moves the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen after three keystrokes.

The portable program works right after you start it up on your system. A right-click on the program icon in the system tray open a context menu with options to disable the program functionality, and to configure the program’s settings.

The settings menu, which you see in the screenshot above, allows you to change the following preferences:

Change the position the mouse cursor is moved to (1=top, 2=right, 3=bottom, 4=left, 5=center)Change the number of keystrokes that are required before the mouse is moved away (from 1-9)Park the mouse a few pixels away from the screen edge, useful if you have a toolbar there for instance that gets automatically activated when the mouse moves into the regionSlide mouse to parking position. This visualizes the movement to the selected positionPark mouse related to screen (1) or active window position (2)

Park Cursor Aside is not as flexible as Auto Hide Mouse Cursor. Especially the fact that the latter does not move the mouse may be more to the liking of users who would like to hide their mouse cursor when they type. That does not make Park Cursor Aside a bad program. On the contrary, it will definitely attract users who find it useful.

Fix Mouse Double-Clicking When You click Once

For the past few days I was experiencing a rather strange issue on my computer that made the mouse double-click sometimes when I did a single left-click. While that was not a problem all the time, it sometimes broke my workflow, for instance when trying to select a folder or deleting tags here in WordPress. The result was a different action than intended, the folder for instance was opened instead of selected.

I suspected that it could be caused by two things. First a setting or driver issue, and second a hardware fault in the mouse’s micro-controller. Hoping that the issue fell into the first category, I began my research.

First thing I remembered was that it was possible to change the double-click speed rate in the mouse control panel.

After experimenting with the slowest double-click speed available I noticed that the issue was not caused by this setting. Next thing I checked were interfering background programs that may have caused the double-clicking issue, but that turned out not to be the issue as well.

Which left me with a driver or hardware problem. I noticed at that time that Microsoft has a support page up about the issue. Troubleshoot mouse double-clicking when you single-click basically lists the same reasons for the behavior that I came up with. The company suggests to test the mouse in Safe Mode which I did not do. This could however be another option for Windows users who are experiencing the same phenomenon.

My next stop were the Logitech mouse drivers. I decided to uninstall them to see if the default Windows mouse drivers were causing the same issue. After uninstallation and reboot, and some testing, I noticed that the problem had been resolved. While I can’t say with 100% certainty that the drivers were corrupt, I can say that uninstalling the drivers did resolve the issue which suggests just that.

Since I did not want to stick to the default Windows mouse drivers, I decided to download the latest Logitech Setpoint mouse software and install it on my system to see if the issue remained resolved. Thankfully it did.

A hardware defect would have been the last option if uninstalling and installing mouse drivers would not have resolved the problem. Users who have come to this point might want to try the MouseFix software before they send their old mouse in to have it repaired or shop for a new mouse. This software basically blocks the mouse from clicking a second time when the button is released.

For my mouse, the problem seems to be that the switch isn’t “debounced” when you release the button — i.e. when you release it, it actually clicks again. Basically, the program intercepts “up” events for the left mouse button, and ignores any subsequent “up” events that follow within a very small time.

The program is only compatible with Windows XP according to the author. I probably would have tested it under Windows 7 anyway to see if it resolves the issue.

Automatically Hide The Mouse Cursor on Inactivity

Have you ever noticed that the mouse cursor tends to get in the way when you are editing text in your operating system or on the web? It happens that the cursor is directly on top of a character or characters on the screen so that these chars cannot be identified properly until you move the cursor away first.

The cursor may also be in your way when you are watching videos on your computer, or reading an ebook, document or spreadsheet.

There is no native option to hide the mouse cursor in the Windows operating system, which means that you either have to rely on third party applications or the manual method of moving the mouse cursor way.

auto hide mouse cusor

Auto Hide Cursor Free is a free application for the Windows operating system that hides the mouse cursor automatically after some time of inactivity. Once you stop using the mouse, you see a timer running down in the application window. When this timer reaches the end, the mouse cursor is automatically hidden on the system.

You can still continue using the keyboard without changing the state of the cursor. The program is a portable application that you can start right after you have unpacked it on your system.

Non-German speakers should click on the LNG button in the footer to change the interface language to English. The timer is set to five seconds by default, which can be changed to a minimum of 3 seconds, or a maximum of 100 seconds. The new grace period becomes available immediately after that modification has been made.

You can add the program to the start of the operating system, configure it to be always on top, or automatically hidden in the system tray whenever it is started.

Auto Hide Mouse Cursor uses little memory and cpu when it is running. The program is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It can be downloaded from the author’s Software OK website.

Speed Clicker, Computer Aided Mouse Clicks

The author of Speed Clicker has created the program to get more out of games such as FarmVille or FarmTown. While I have never played those games on Facebook, it appears as if players need to click the mouse as fast as possible in various situations like harvesting or fishing. Speed Clicker saves your mouse trigger finger from tiring out. It also gives you an advantage in those games which many will see as cheating, especially when competing against other humans in the game.

But Speed Clicker users can utilize the program for other purposes as well. For instance in other games where clicking performs an action that needs to be repeated a lot of times, or applications where selections are made with mouse clicks rather than entering a number or value with the keyboard.

When you fire up Speed Clicker for the first time, you see the main application window in front of you. Here you define the click rate and the variance. The default click rate speed is set to ten clicks per second. The variance value will move the mouse cursor into a random direction after each click.

speed clicker

You activate the computer aided clicking with a tap on the Ctrl key on the keyboard. It is currently not possible to change the hotkeys which is unfortunate as they interfere with other hotkeys on the computer (for instance Ctrl-T to open a new browser tab). The developer has however announced plans to integrate the option in a future release of the program.

Here is a short video that is showing it in action in the popular FarmTown game.

The application requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 on the computer. Interested users can download the latest version of Speed Clicker from the developer site.

How To control Non-Active Windows With The Mouse

You can only control the active window with your mouse in a default Windows installation. If you need to do something in another window, you need to activate it first, before you can do so. This can for instance be done with a left-click on the window, the program’s taskbar or system tray icon, or a keyboard shortcut like Alt-Tab to bring that window to the front.

Sometimes though you just need to work in that window for a second or so before you continue your work in the other window. This can be you blogging and listening to music at the same time, if you want to skip a song or change the volume for instance. It could also be useful in Windows Explorer when you want to drag and drop files to a folder that is not visible in the file manager’s sidebar.

With Mouse Hunter installed and running in the background, you can control some window functions with your mouse even if that window is not active. This includes scrolling the window up or down or using other functionality that is assigned to the mouse wheel. For media players like SMplayer, this could mean going forward or backwards, or changing the volume of the media that is playing currently.

mouse hunter

I often display two web browser windows side by side, for instance the admin interface of this blog when I’m writing an article, and the developer website of the program or service I’m writing about. Instead of having to click around to activate and re-activate windows, I can simply use Mouse Hunter to scroll on the developer site to read up on everything that they have to say about the app or service.

Another application is in Windows Explorer, where I may have selected some files that I want to move or copy to another folder in the sidebar. Once selected, I cannot scroll the sidebar without losing focus on the selected files.

Windows users who like to test the program’s functionality can download it from the developer’s website. The program is freeware and compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the windows operating system.
