No More Flash Updates For Linux, Unless You Use Chrome

Breaking News: Adobe just made an announcement on the official Air and Flash Player Team Blog that changes are coming to Flash Player on Linux. The company has partnered up with Google to “develop a single modern API for hosting plugins within the browser”. PPAPI (code-named Pepper), adds a layer between the browser and underlying operating system that “abstracts away differences between browser and operating system implementations”.

Google will provide a PPAPI implementation later this year for all 32-bit and 64-bit platforms that are supported by the company’s Chrome web browser. All Chrome version on all operating systems, and not only Linux, will receive an update that implements the PPAPI-based Flash Player.

adobe-flash-player

Changes do not end here though for Linux users. Adobe notes that the Flash Player browser plugin for Linux will only be available via the PPAPI plugin that is part of the Google Chrome browser distribution. Adobe will not provide direct Flash Player browser plugin downloads anymore on their site, nor will it update Flash Player on Linux anymore with non-security related updates.

This basically means that Flash Player 11.2 is the latest cross-browser version of the browser plugin for Linux. While it is theoretically possible that other browser developers will implement Pepper, it could also mean the beginning of the end for Flash on Linux. Mozilla for instance states on MozillaWiki that it “s not interested in or working on Pepper at this time”.

Adobe will support Flash Player 11.2 on Linux for five years after release with security updates. Linux users have five years that they can continue to use Flash contents in other browsers besides Chrome. After that, they either have to hope that other browser developers have implemented Pepper by now, ignore Flash from that moment on, or switch to Chrome when they want to access Flash contents in their operating system.

DriverIdentifier, Scan Your PC Hardware For Driver Updates

I’m not a big fan of applications that scan a system for hardware driver updates, as it can happen that updates are suggested that are either not compatible with the installed hardware, or not beneficial to the system. These programs have their purpose, but only for users who care to double-check suggested driver updates before they install the drivers on their system. Users who just blindly install the suggested drivers may

DriverIdentifier is a free application that scans all drivers currently installed on the system to compare their versions with the latest recorded version in the service’s database.

update drivers driveridentifier

The program needs to be installed on the system before it can be run. A click on the Scan Drivers button checks the PC’s hardware and installed drivers. This takes about 30 seconds before results are opened in the default web browser. That’s one of the issues that some users may have with the program, as some would prefer the list to be displayed on the desktop and not the web.

The web page lists general information about the PC at the top, and below that a large listing of drivers that are installed on the system.

driver identifier

Drivers are listed with their name, the manufacturing company, the version and release date. Outdated drivers are listed at the top, with every other driver listed below that. Download links are listed for all outdated drivers to download driver updates directly or find updates with the help of the Google search engine.

There is unfortunately no option to filter out drivers, for instance all Microsoft first-party drivers, to improve the accessibility of the list.

How is DriverIdentifier comparing to a software like DriverEasy? DriverEasy displays results in the program window on the desktop, which is way more comfortable than a web listing. The software furthermore filters results by unknown or outdated drivers, and lists download and installation options right in its interface.

The downside is that the free version does not support backups or uninstallation of drivers, limits the available bandwidth for driver downloads and does not create system restore points when driver updates are installed.

DriverIdentifier is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft windows operating system.

Update: Please note that the program will install a toolbar and modify the default search provider and homepage if you do not disable the installation by selecting the custom option instead of the quick installation option.

Find Out Exactly What Changed When Firefox Updates

Mozilla publishes release logs whenever a new version of the Firefox web browser gets released. These logs detail the most prominent changes and feature additions, but not everything that has happened in the background. There are also situations where no log is published, for instance when the beta, aurora or nightly builds get updated.

How can you find out about the changes in those updates? That’s where the Current Pushlog extension by Sören Hentzschel comes into play. It basically allows Firefox users to look at all the code changes that have been made since the last update of the browser.

pushlog

The web browser needs to update at least once after the installation of the add-on before the add-on’s functionality becomes available. It adds a single icon to the Firefox status bar which, when clicked on, loads the pushlog entries in a new browser tab.

The changes are then displayed directly on that screen. Each change which a link to the changeset, the author’s name, the push date and user, and the commit message. This message is often all that is needed to understand a specific change. Sometimes though it may be necessary to click on the changeset link to for additional details.

The actual code is displayed on those pages, which may make it hard for users without knowledge of the programming language to understand the changes that have been made.

The extension supports all major Firefox release channels. In particular, stable, beta, aurora and nightly, as well as ux.

Firefox users who do not want to install an extension can bookmark and open the logs manually as well. The extension is however more comfortable to use, especially if multiple versions of the browser are installed or used on the system.

Current Pushlog can be installed from the official Mozilla firefox add-ons repository.

How To Disable Restart Your Computer To Finish Installing Important Updates Prompt

We have all been there and seen it. Whenever updates are installed in Windows that require a reboot, you are prompted in regular intervals to do so. These messages appear shortly after installing the updates, and then regularly until you do so. The Restart Your Computer To Finish Installing Important Updates prompt offers to postpone the update for 10 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours. The prompt is then displayed again if the computer has not been rebooted in the meantime.

Many Windows users dislike the nagging prompt, especially if they are currently running tasks that would be interrupted by a reboot. This includes video rendering, an important download or upload, or a document that needs to be finished in the next hour or so.

restart your computer to finish installing important updates

While you could select 4 hours from the menu to see the reboot prompt after 4 hours, you may still like to disable the display of the update prompt for a longer period of time. This can be useful if you are currently in a day long presentation that requires the computer.

There are two options to deal with the issue. You could first stop the Windows Update service for the current session. This basically blocks the prompt and any attempt to install new updates until the computer is rebooted.

The following steps are needed for this:

Open up an elevated command prompt window. You can do that by clicking on the Start button of the operating system, entering cmd in the search form and using the shortcut Ctrl-Shift-Enter to open it with administrative privileges. A user account control prompt may be displayed.Run the command net stop “windows update” to stop the Windows Update service for the current session.

net stop windows update

You can restart the service with the command net start “windows update”. The service will also be started normally on the next start of the system.

The second option lets you disable the auto reboot option when users are logged on. This requires some Registry hacking and is only suggested for advanced users. You may also want to backup the Registry first before you make those changes.

Use Windows-r to bring up the run box. Enter regedit and hit enter to open the Windows Registry Editor.Navigate to the following Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto UpdateLocate the ForcedReboot key there and change its value from whatever it is set to to 0.

Please note that this works only under Vista, Windows 7 and newer operating systems.

The third and final option is the Local Group Policy Editor which is only available in some versions of the Windows operating system. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update and locate the following two parameters:

No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installationsRe-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

Enable the first parameter to block automatic restarts after update installations, and set the second to a high enough period to receive the reboot prompt less often.
