It feels kinda strange that Google has not integrated RSS feed capabilities into its social networking site Google+. I do know quite a few users who would like to subscribe to certain Google+ users via RSS to receive information about posts in their RSS reader.

A few hacks have come and gone in the past that added RSS feed capabilities to Google Plus. Google Plus Feed for instance is a third party service that turns public messages of a Google+ profile into an RSS feed that you can subscribe to in programs such as Google Reader, RSS Owl or my current favorite program Great News.

Feed+ is a Google Chrome app that offers more than that. Even better, it has been created by a Google employee which should add a bit of trust to the app. And trust is something that you need, considering that you need to be signed in to a Google account to add it to your browser and authorize it to access certain data sources.

You can start the program from the browser’s new tab page after installation and authorization. The app supports two different types of feeds:

Public user feeds: this turns all public messages of a selected user on Google Plus and turns it into an RSS feed. To create the feed, you either need to enter the profile ID which you find on the public profile page on Google+, or the full profile url.Search results: this creates an RSS feed from a selected search term. It combines all public posts that include the search phrase.

A click on the preview button generates a preview of the feed which allows you to verify that everything is displayed correctly. You can then click on the add button to add the feed to your library on the app page.

Each feed listed here links to a generic RSS feed url and Google Reader. If you are not using Google Reader, you simply need to copy the RSS feed url into your program of choice. Please note that the feeds remain active even if you remove the app from Google Chrome. It is not really clear how to de-authorize the application, the Google authorized access listing does not include the script. The app in addition is limited to Google Chrome.

Feed+ is regardless of that one of the best options of creating RSS feed from Google profile listings and Google+ searches.

How to create Passphrases with KeePass

Passphrases have several advantages over conventional passwords that make them more suitable in a variety of situations. Here you can then add words to the dictionary that is used to create the passphrases. This step is really important, and while you are at it, you can also check out the generation options on the right. Here you can select the count of words for your passphrases, configure substitutions to increase the security of the phrases, add extra characters to the passphrase, and define capitalization options. The newly generated passphrases become then available in the Preview tab.

Exiting the settings returned an error on a 64-bit system of Windows, but did not seem to have an impact on the program itself. The configuration changes were saved after all.

If you are not using the KeePass password manager but would like to generate secure passphrases from time to time, you could take a closer look at PWGen for the Windows operating system which offers a similar feature set.

Word Sequence can be a useful plugin for KeePass, especially thanks to its advanced generation options that improve the security of the generated passphrase significantly. It is not really a necessary plugin for KeePass users though, considering that it is also possible to simply generate a very long random password instead. Since it is saved in the password manager’s database it does not need to be remembered.

Create A Custom Firefox Installer with Add-ons, Bookmarks And Preferences

Deploying a customized version of the Firefox web browser can be quite the daunting task. It does not really matter if you are a home user who wants to copy Firefox to another PC, or a system administrator who has to deploy Firefox on hundreds of PCs. Home users can use Firefox backup programs like Febe or Mozbackup for instance to copy their extensions and settings to the new computer.

Firefox Addon Maker offers to create custom Firefox installers that will not only install the selected web browser version, but also add-ons, plugins, bookmarks, passwords and other custom preferences.

The portable Windows application displays all customization options on one screen. It begins with the selection of the Firefox edition that the installer should install on target computer systems. The program supports the current stable version of the browser, the beta version and the previous version. It does not support Aurora or Nightly versions, or older versions. All program interface languages are selectable here as well.

While it is possible to include existing profile data in the installer, it is also possible to create a custom installer without it. You can select one of the detected Firefox profiles directly, or a custom profile path instead which is for instance necessary for portable versions of the browser, or if the correct profile path has not been detected by Firefox Addon Maker.

The private and common options menus define which settings and components are copied from the selected profile to be included in the installer.

The following choices are available:

Private Options: Include bookmarks, passwords, cookies, history, preferences, sessions and extension user dataCommon Options: Including extensions and themes, plugins, components, search engines, dictionaries, modules and hyphenation

It is possible to copy the complete profile, or only select preferences. Home users for instance may want to include all preferences and settings, while business owners might not want to include cookies, passwords or the browsing history.

It is probably a good idea to create and configure a new Firefox profile to be used for the creation of the custom installer, as it is not possible to customize individual settings further. All extensions will for instance be copied over, without options to select only some. A new profile allows you to customize the installation exactly the way you want it to be distributed.

The editable options can be used to set Firefox as the default browser on the target system, to select custom interface icons, and to disable the browser’s Migration Wizard, Compatibility Wizard and Crash Reporter.

The program furthermore offers to include the latest Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave plugins, as well as Macromedia Authorware, Windows Media Player and the Microsoft Office 2007 in the installer. This is useful if the option to include plugins from the selected Firefox profile has been disabled.

The installer can add the Firefox installation to the start menu, pin it to the Quick Launch toolbar and place a shortcut on the desktop.

A click on Create Installer finally creates the custom Firefox installer. The program downloads the selected version of Firefox before it is processed and the installer is created.

The program saves the custom installer on the desktop. The program and the created installer are compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

Create Your Epub Ebooks with Sigil Ebook Editor

When you start writing an ebook, you can use all sorts of editors for that task. From good old – and plain – Notepad to Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer. Sigil’s main advantage over those editors is its focus on ebooks. The program is a free, open source editor for EPUB format ebooks. It offers a what you see is what you get interface (WYSIWIG), as well as advanced features such as support for XHTML, CSS and XPGT editing.

The main interface includes a toolbar at the top, a book browser on the left, a tabbed editing interface in the middle and if enabled, table of contents on the right.

The basic idea is to use the left sidebar to create and move between chapters. These are crated easily with a click on File > New > Blank Section or by using the split chapter shortcut Ctrl-Return.

The editor works like any rich text editor you come across. You can start adding text immediately to it, use formatting options, define headings or insert images for instances right away. Advanced users can switch to a dual view mode that displays the underlying code in a split editor window, or a pure code editor window which may appeal to users who want to add contents in the code right away.

Sigil can create a table of contents for the newly created ebook automatically. The ebook editor analyzes the headings and uses that structure to create the table of contents. Headings are easily created either directly in code, or with a click on the headings pulldown menu of the toolbar.

Ebooks can be validated with a click on File > Validate Epub which may be helpful before the book is saved and distributed. Books are automatically saved in the epub format.

Sigil supports keyboard shortcuts for most operations, and dictionary files for spell checking.

The ebook editor is an easy to use yet complex enough program for aspiring authors who would like to create books in epub format. The software is available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh systems at the project’s Google Code web page.

QR Codes, the QR stands for Quick Response, are images that contain messages that can be decrypted with specialized software. These codes are fairly common in the mobile phone world, where companies use them to direct users to their web offerings more easily. Once you start QR-Gen you immediately notice that there are only a handful of steps involved in the creation of your own codes. You can enter a message in the upper right corner. Your message has a maximum size of 2000 characters and can consist of anything that you can write into that box. You could simply add a web address for instance, a paragraph of text or even a whole letter.

Below that are options that change the size of the QR code and the error correction level. You can leave those at default value or adjust them to your needs. The size ranges from 100×100 to 500×500, with 300×300 being selected by default.

You need to click on the generate button to create the new QR code. The image should change visibly once you do. A click on save image finally saves the code to your hard drive. The default image format is png, with the option to change that to four other formats including jpg and gif.

QR-Gen is a lightweight program for Windows users who want to create QR-Codes on their system.

Create Descriptive Media Torrents With TDMaker

The creation of torrent files has become a lot easier in recent years. All it takes today is to drop the files you want to share in a compatible program to create the torrent. The popular Bittorrent client uTorrent offers these capability for instance.

But that creates just the torrent without any descriptions or information. No screenshot, no description informing users about what the download is all about. And while you could fire up Notepad, and either a screenshot taking program like SnagIt or Screenshot Captor, or a movie thumbnailer.

TDMaker has been created for users who want to create descriptive media torrents. The program is compatible with all versions of Windows from XP on to the very latest version, and various Linux distributions including Ubuntu. Please note that the program requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 or above. The program will install a compatible version if none is installed on the system.

The program interface displays all configuration steps in tabs in the main interface. You best begin with the addition of files and folders in the program’s input tab. Here you can also define a title, source, web link and DVD properties. The source selection is mandatory, and lets you select a quality level like HDTV, cam or DVD.

You can then create descriptions with a click on the button. The program creates screenshots automatically if you have configured the path to the mplayer executable during installation (or another program to create screenshots). The screenshots tab will display the list of created screenshots. Please note that these screenshots get automatically updated to Imageshack, and that the links are displayed directly in the tab as well. The image host can be changed in the Thumbnailers tab.

TDMaker furthermore fills out all media information automatically, and adds the information to a template file.

A right-click in the program interface opens the context menu with options to open the torrent folder, screenshot folder or other directories related to the project.

TDMaker could speed up things for users who create torrents regularly, especially if they usually add file information manually to their torrents. The latest version can be downloaded from the project’s Google Code homepage.

How To Create Your Custom Reddit RSS Feed

Even though I knew about Reddit for as long as I knew about Digg, I never really used it for a longer period of time. This changed recently when I started to use my account more actively. I personally like two things the most, next to a big list of smaller things. Reddit first and foremost is one of the few destinations on the Internet that keeps you up to date on things that you are interested in. It is either the first site to know, or among the first to post a link to the original source where it all began.

The second is the community that powers the site. It is the comments that can give you additional insight and perspectives, that may mention alternatives or other information that improve the original story.

Reddit on the other hand is not the easiest site to use, especially its customization options require some explaining. When I first joined Reddit I tried to find public RSS feed links for categories, but could not find any that were working properly.

I then noticed that each Reddit account had its own private and customizable RSS news feed. These private news feed are accessible on the preferences page.

If you have already customized your frontpage, you can simply right-click on the RSS or JSON buttons and select the copy link option from the context menu to import it into your RSS feed reader of choice.

If you have not done that already, you need to click on the Edit link in the top nav bar first to customize the selection. All Reddit sections that you are subscribed to are listed in the right sidebar of the screen. You can simply click on an unsubscribe link there to remove a section from the feed. You can also add sections again by scrolling down the page and clicking on the subscribe buttons next to each section.

Please note that your private feed gets automatically updated if you are adding new sections to your frontpage.

You can only subscribe to groups here, and not subgroups. For that, you need to click on one of the listed subgroups on the page, and click on the subscribe link on the new page to add it to your frontpage (and thus your private RSS feed). This is useful if you are only interested in a specific subgroup.

Lets paraphrase again:

There does not seem to be an option to only subscribe to the top stories of a particular group. If you subscribe, you get all stories that are posted there.

Create Stunning Photo Slideshows With IMGDissolver

If you ever wanted to create a stunning photo slideshow for your own personal use or for distribution, you’d probably discovered that it can be quite difficulty to find the right program for the job. We have covered slideshow creators like Wow Slider for instance in the past.

IMGDissolver has been released in an early alpha version, and while that early stage of development shines through somewhat when using the software, you’d be surprised at the functionality that is already integrated.

You can not only add photo formats but also video formats to your slideshow in the main tab of the application. A click on Add Images opens a file browser that you can use to add supported formats. Next to standard image formats such as jpg, png and gif, it also supports popular video formats like mpg, avi, mov or ogg.

The same configuration screen offers options to change the brightness, contrast, saturation or gamma, and red, green and blue values. A click on Effects furthermore displays effects like sepia, blur or gray scale that you can apply to individual positions.

You can add music to the slideshow under the Music tab. Just browse to an mp3 file on your computer and click the add button to have it play in the background while the slideshow is displayed on the screen.

Transition effects are applied under settings. Here you can select nice looking effects like mosaic, door or fall down, as well as background colors, the duration each image is displayed and filters that are applied to all photos.

The program ships with audio and video tools that you can use to merge or concatenate audio files, or to cut videos. This is nice for quick last minute editing.

You can play the slideshow right on the computer, save it in the program’s own format to play or edit it at a later time, or convert the slideshow to divx or DVD compatible formats. The former generates an avi file that you can play in all media players that play avi files, the latter saves the slideshow as an ISO image that you can burn to DVD.

This can then be played back on the television and compatible video DVD players. As far as the avi goes, you can select a resolution that you want the video to be in. Available resolutions range from 320×240 to 800×576. There is unfortunately no option to save photo slideshows in larger resolutions.

The only negative is that it sometimes loads slowly. It took about ten seconds for the program window to show up after start, and maybe five or so seconds to switch between some program menus. It is likely that the developer will resolve those issues in future versions.

It takes minutes to create great looking photo slideshows with IMGDissolver. The option to save them as avi or DVD compatible files ensures that they can be played on nearly every system. Great program, highly recommended.

How to Create a Hidden Encrypted Volume With True Crypt

A judge recently ordered a US citizen to decrypt storage space on a computer so that police forces could analyze protected files on the system. In this particular case, the defendant was ordered to decrypt the hard drive of her Toshiba notebook no later than February 21, or face the consequences “including contempt of court”.

The ruling may still get overturned, but at this point in time it is not clear how this will turn out.

Encryption makes sure that only authorized users can enable access to data provided that there is no loophole or backdoor built-into the software itself. People traveling to the US may have their mobile computers analyzed by federal agents even without probable cause.

Users have a number of options at their disposal to protect their data from prying eyes. Encryption for instance requires a pass phrase or key to be entered to decrypt the contents of the storage device. If you forget the password, you cannot open the encrypted contents anymore.

There is however a better option for users who want to make sure that they private files stay personal. True Crypt supports so called hidden volumes. These volumes are encrypted volumes inside an encrypted volume. True Crypt calls the concept plausible deniability. You put your important files into the hidden volume, and other files that you do not mind to share with others in the regular encrypted container. When someone asks you to decrypt your data, you enter the password to decrypt the first volume that you do not mind sharing with anyone.

It may happen that you are forced by somebody to reveal the password to an encrypted volume. There are many situations where you cannot refuse to reveal the password (for example, due to extortion). Using a so-called hidden volume allows you to solve such situations without revealing the password to your volume.

The principle is that a TrueCrypt volume is created within another TrueCrypt volume (within the free space on the volume). Even when the outer volume is mounted, it should be impossible to prove whether there is a hidden volume within it or not*, because free space on any TrueCrypt volume is always filled with random data when the volume is created** and no part of the (dismounted) hidden volume can be distinguished from random data. Note that TrueCrypt does not modify the file system (information about free space, etc.) within the outer volume in any way.

Hidden volumes can be created quite easily in True Crypt. New True Crypt users should read through the tutorial posted on the site first to understand the basics of creating encrypted volumes on the computer.

You have the option to create both volumes in one go though, by following the process outlined below. Click on Tools > Volume Creation Wizard. You have two options now how to proceed:

Create an encrypted file container: This option can be used to create an encrypted file on one of the computer’s hard drive and add a hidden file container to it, or add a hidden file container to an existing encrypted file.Encrypt non-system partition/drive: This is basically the same option as above, only that it works partitions and hard drives, and not with files. Please note that all contents of the selected hard drive/partition will get deleted in the process.

I suggest you start with an encrypted file container to see how the process works.

Select Hidden TrueCrypt volume on the next page

Now you have the option to select normal or direct mode. Normal mode creates both the outer and the hidden volume in the process, while direct mode creates a hidden volume inside an existing True Crypt file container.

Lets pick normal mode to demonstrate how both the standard encrypted container and the hidden container within are created.

You now need to select a file name for the outer container. Pick any directory and file name that you want. You can use the file name to your advantage, for instance by making it a .tmp file or a .avi.

You are then asked to select the encryption algorithm and hash algorithm for the outer volume. Pick one each or keep the default settings.

You are then asked to select a size for the file container. Keep in mind that the hidden volume is added to this container file as well. Select a password on the next screen. This password is used to decrypt the files stored in the outer volume. The volume will be formatted afterwards. Move your mouse around to create random values. Click on Format afterwards to create the file. Depending on the size, you may need to switch the file system from FAT to NTFS.

Now that you have created the outer volume, you move on to the next step, the creation of the hidden volume.

The process is nearly identical. You first select the encryption and hash algorithms, then the file size. True Crypt will display the maximum possible hidden volume file size on that screen. Don’t select the maximum if you plan on adding files to the outer volume as well.

The remaining steps are identical. You now have one outer volume, one hidden volume and two pass phrases to decrypt the volumes on your computer.

Mounting the hidden volume

To mount either the outer or hidden volume do the following:

Select a free drive letter in the True Crypt interface.Click on Select File and browse to the encrypted file that you want to mount.click on mount afterwards.Enter the pass phrase for the outer volume to mount it, or the password for the hidden volume to mount it instead.

If you mount the outer volume you may want to click on mount options to check the “protect hidden volume against damage caused by writing to outer volume” box to avoid to protect the hidden container from being partially or fully overwritten. You need to supply the hidden volume password though for this option.

The very same principle applies to the creation of a hidden volume inside an encrypted partition or hard drive.

Create Extension Groups With Context For Google Chrome

When you look at the extensions that you have installed in your Chrome browser, you will probably notice that you do not use all of them all the time. It is more likely that you have extensions installed for specific tasks, for instance work, entertainment, research or shopping. And even though you do not use them all of the time, all of them are running in the background whenever the web browser is open. This seems like a waste of resources, and maybe even space, considering that many extensions like to place icons into Chrome’s address bar.

Context is a useful extension that allows you to group extensions and enable or disable those groups at will. All you need to do to get started after installation is to open the options of the extensions and start adding new contexts (aka groups). You are asked to select a name and icon for the context for identification purposes. The extension displays 14 different icons that you can select for your groups.

Once created, you can start dragging and dropping extension into those groups. Context by default will only display extensions in the options that you can move into groups. You can enable apps support under additional options to group applications as well.

Click the Save button once you are done. You can from that moment on click on the Context menu button to select one of the extension groups that you want to work with. Switching between groups, or enabling all extensions, works without a restart of the browser. Keep in mind though that extensions that you have not added to any groups are not available when you activate individual groups. They become only available if you enable the all extensions option. Only the extensions and apps that you have added to that particular group are then enabled in the browser, with everything else disabled.

Context will display a notification at the bottom whenever you install a new app or extension. You can use it to move the program into one of the available groups.

The core benefits should be obvious. You first save browser resources by reducing the number of extensions that are running in the background. You second save screen estate and increase the visibility by removing extension icons from the address bar that you do not need to work with right now.

Create Local Websites With Ampps

The majority of web developers develop their websites and services locally before they publish them on the Internet. This makes sense in a variety of ways, from saving a lot of bandwidth to faster updating or improved security.

Even better, new technologies have made it a lot easier to setup a local web development system on any PC. Ampps, which stands for Apache MySQL PHP Python Softalicious, is a free web development environment for the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems that can be installed with just a few clicks. Once up and running, it is up to the user to install web applications from the local admin interface. The program can install 260 web applications that include highlights such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal, and lesser known applications such as the course management system Moodle, several types of Wikipedia-like applications or feed aggregators such as Gregarius.

When you first start the program after installation you’ll get into the admin console where you can configure Apache, MySQL and PHP, and start, stop and restart the services.

Links in the form of icons open the local web administration interface or the apps that are currently up and running.

The web admin interface displays a list of application categories on the left, and links to core admin pages to the right. Here you can install and maintain databases, manage and add domains, edit general settings or access PHP and Perl information.

To install a web application, you click on the download button next to it to bring up a page with detailed information about it. You can install the script right away, or look at features and screenshots, open a demo page or access ratings and reviews.

A click on install opens the software setup page with all information filled out automatically. While it is possible to run the setup with the selected values, it is suggested to change at least the admin username or password if required.

A click on Install on the page downloads and installs the latest package automatically on the local system. You can thereafter open the new application to work with it.

What sets Ampps apart from other solutions like WordPress Portable, XAMPP or Wampserver are the applications that the program ships with. The inclusion of phpMyAdmin and SQlite Manager is also a great help in importing existing data into the local development environment.

Web Developers and users who want to run web applications locally can make use of Ampps to do so. Ampps is available for Windows and Mac OS X. Downloads are offered at the developer website.
