Geographically, the Dirty South genre placed places as diverse as Houston, Birmingham, and Miami, and was significantly influenced by Ghetto Mafia in the mid-1990s. Musically, South rap is recognized for its danceabilty and rhythmic delivery. Known for its widespread, mainstream appeal, Pop Rap's first breakout star was LL Cool J. The Fresh Prince and MC Hammer speedily rose to the top of the Pop Rap arena and the music charts with lyrics that were less controversial than those of the Gangsta Rap genre, and thus were more likely to receive radio airplay. While Rap was garnering a reputation for less than savory lyrics and artists for questionable actions, other musicians were expressing their faith through Hip Hop. Christian Rap took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups like P.I.D. and S.F.C.
Although Jazz Rap has not enjoyed mainstream commercial success, the genre often incorporates Afrocentric and political themes. Gang Starr and Gil Scott-Heron are often cited as two of the first Jazz rappers. Similar to Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop has not enjoyed mass commercial success. With a focus on social concerns, Conscious Hip Hop isn't overtly politics, but rather deals with issues such as poverty and religion. A mix of dance music and rap, Electro Hip Hop first emerged in the 1980s on the West Coast from artists like Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover. By the mid-1990s, Electro Hip Hop had nearly run its course.
Because of the popularity of street music, hip hop and rap artists have also ventured into clothing business. Fans patronize the brands of these popular street music artists. Street music fashion is all about baggy pants, sneakers and blings. Street music has been a favourite especially among youth.
Hip hop music was initially discovered in the 70's. To become a popular street music hip hop artist, one ought to sing out well, have the winning attitude, and most importantly know how to dance. Being a street hip hop artist will not be a fairly easy job. It certainly takes a large amount of effort, inspiration, and dedication.
