Windows 8 Tips For Professionals

Even if you are a tech savvy user, it will take some time before you understand the workflow and functionality of Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system. The change from a desktop-orientated system to a Metro and desktop hybrid may throw you off at first as basic features have been changed in the operating system. This guide looks at those features from a professional perspective.

Windows 8 ships with two interfaces currently. The start screen, known as Metro UI, which gets loaded when you log in, and the traditional desktop. It was previously possible to disable Metro UI to only work on the desktop. With recent changes, it is currently not possible. All the tools that worked in the Developer Preview are not working right now.

1. Switching between apps in Metro

You may have noticed that Metro apps and games start in fullscreen, and that you cannot close them down once they are started. There is no close button available, and the only way to get out of an app is to press the Windows key, or use the Charms menu which you can display when you hover your mouse cursor over the lower right edge of the screen.

You can switch between open apps and windows with Alt-Tab, which works exactly as it did under Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Windows 8's Alt-Tab displays both desktop windows and Metro apps.

2. Closing Metro apps

task manager

Metro apps keep running on the system even if you leave them using Alt-Tab. They use little to no resources and are basically put into sleep mode. The only option to close them down is to use Ctrl-Alt-Esc to bring up Metro UI’s basic Task Manager to do that.

There are several reasons why you might want to close open apps. They first appear when you use Alt-Tab to switch between apps and windows. The more you have open, the longer it takes to find the app that you want to switch to. Privacy, and the urge to run a “clean system” may be other reasons for killing apps when you do not need to use them anymore.

You can click on More Details to display the full Task Manager instead.

3. Show administrative tools in Metro

administrative tools

Administrative tools are hidden by default, but you can enable them if you know where to look. Open the Charms menu by hovering the mouse cursor over the lower right corner of the screen. Select Settings, and then Settings again under Start at the top.

Switch Enable Administrative Tools from No to Yes. This adds 18 core system tools like the Task Scheduler, Event Viewer or Computer Management to the Metro interface.

4. MSConfig without startup information

msconfig

If you have been using the built-in tool MSConfig to manage the system’s startup programs, you’d be in for a surprise. Microsoft has moved the information from the system tool into the task manager. MSConfig still displays the list of services, boot information and links to tools though.

5. App History

app history

Windows keeps track of a system’s application history. Apps in this regards are only Metro applications, and not desktop programs. You see the names of the apps that have eebn used, their cpu time, bandwidth and other information.

You can click on Delete Usage History to remove the resource usage information, but not the apps from the listing. It was previously possible to control the feature in the Privacy settings of the Metro Control Panel. The options were removed in the Consumer Preview.

There may be a setting in the Registry that deals with it, but I have not found it yet.

6. Synchronize settings

sync your settings

You may remember the announcement that Windows 8 can synchronize customized settings like themes or account pictures with the cloud, to make them available on every Windows 8 PC the user signs in with the same account.

You can configure the feature for each PC individually in the Sync your settings menu in the Metro Control Panel. To get there bring up the Charms menu, select Settings, then More PC Settings. Scroll down until you find Sync your Settings.

You can switch the synchronization feature off for the PC, or customize which information you want synced.

7. Just Type

type and run

When in Metro UI, you can just type to launch programs. Windows will not display all files matching the term you enter. This may be confusing at first, as regedit for instance returns no results. You can still hit the enter key to launch the Registry Editor, or other tools like msconfig in Metro.

The type, search and run feature only works on the Metro start page. It won’t work if you have a Metro app open, and it won’t work on the desktop as well.

8. Drag and Drop

You can drag and drop Metro apps around to sort them the way you want them to be in. This works ok-ish with a mouse or touch screen, and not so well if you only have a trackpad at your disposal. There does not seem to be a way to drag and drop multiple items at once either.

Still, if you want particular apps to appear in different locations, drag and drop is your only option to achieve that goal.

9. Uninstalling Apps

uninstall apps

If you do not use some of the default apps, or want to uninstall apps that you have tried out, you can do so quite easily. Right-click the app that you want to uninstall, and select the Uninstall option from the footer menu afterwards.

You can alternatively unpin the app from the start screen, which would keep it on the system, accessible through search for instance, but not on the Metro UI start screen.

10. Making apps larger or smaller

app size

You may have noticed that some apps take up more space on the start screen than others. Some apps are displayed with twice the size of others. A right-click and the selection of smaller or larger decreases or increases the size of the app on the screen.

11. Double-click to zoom out

A double-click on the Charms icon in the lower right corner of the screen zooms out of the start page. This makes it easier to navigate if you have lots of apps installed. You can also drag and drop blocks around instead of single apps.

12. Turn of Windows Store

Windows Store can be disabled in the Group Policy Editor. Type gpedit.msc in Metro and press enter. Now go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store, and enable Turn off the Store application (or under Computer Configuration and the same path).

Helpful Information about Good Herbal Remedies

Everyone is now purchasing herbal remedies to be healthy. They like using these since they are natural and safe. Herbal remedies can relieve them from signs of colds, flu and other sicknesses. Also, they are a popular choice because they are affordable and dont have negative side effects.

Herbal supplements are normally safe. You should still, however, take note of some factors before you head over to your community drugstore. Listed below are some useful information every consumer must keep in mind when purchasing herbal medicines.

Check which brand names are recommended

Search through online reviews and look for online drugstores that are marketing them. They are available at huge discounts so shoppers could possibly get the best bargain. If you have any queries about the herbal remedies, give them a phone call. You will find their number on the site. Dont hesitate and just ask away.

See your local medical doctor

As always, it is better to consult with your doctor. You need to confer with your physician if you are considering to use herbal supplements or natural enhancers. Get an another opinion if you need it. Your physicians can provide good insight about herbal supplements.

One of the things you need to ask your medical doctors is about the dosage of your medicine. They might help figure out the proper dosage. There are cases when small amounts of herbal medicines are unsuccessful while too much causes serious complications. Check your medical records as you may be allergic to some herbal medicines. It is usually better to be safe than sorry.

People with allergic reactions should be careful

Those who suffer from discomfort, rashes, pain, swelling and other abnormal physical changes buy herbal supplements to relieve them. In case you are still experiencing these despite taking the herbal supplement, you should seek medical help immediately. If this remains untreated, this can bring about more serious complications.

Do a little research

If youre interested to buy herbal supplements to remedy common colds and flu, you ought to conduct a personal research. Some reliable sources include health magazines, medical journals, pharmacists and websites supported and ran by the medical community.

Give it some time to work

Something you really should remember is that reading the label just isnt enough to determine how effective or safe the item is. It will certainly take some time to discover the right product thatll be right for you.

Make use of pure herbal remedies

Buyers should buy herbal supplements using one main ingredient. Mixed or combined products could possibly have missing ingredients and could not have a balanced dose.

-Other warnings to heed

People over the age of 65 years or those who are under 18 are generally disallowed from using herbal medicines. Those people who are taking other types of prescription medication and people who have recently gone through surgery, pregnancy, breast-feeding should talk to a health care professional before trying to use any kind of herbal products.

Bear in mind that herbal remedies dont assure a cure to sickness. Many individuals still attest to their effectiveness in increasing energy, decreasing symptoms such as fever, nausea, cough and shortening an illness duration.

Ebay.de To Switch To New Payment Processing System

A press release by eBay Germany indicates that the company plans to switch the site’s current payment processing system to a new one this summer. Ebay customers who purchase goods on the site will then make their payments directly to eBay, and not the seller of the product anymore. The system works similar to Amazon’s marketplace system where Amazon customers transfer the money for the purchased items to Amazon instead of the merchant directly. The only difference between both systems is that eBay will transfer the auction money in full to the item seller. Sellers will be charged with fees after the end of the transaction. Amazon on the other hand deducts fees directly from the sales of items.

ebay payment processing

The system works like an escrow system.

The buyer transfers the money for the item and the item’s shipping costs to eBay.eBay notifies the seller of the receipt of payment. The seller sends the item to the buyereBay transfers the money to the seller’s PayPal or bank account. The time of payment depends on a number of factors including the status of the account and the history.

Five different money transfer options will be supported by eBay on launch: Bank Transfer, Credit Card, Direct Debit, PayPal or Skrill (formerly Moneybookers).

The new payment processing system aims to strengthen the online transaction safety on the marketplace. Since customers will be paying eBay directly, it is less likely that they will get scammed by shady sellers on the site. Customers can get a refund if the item differs from the items they bought on the site, or if they do not receive the items at all. This money back guarantee covers all payment options, and not just PayPal. The inclusion of Skrill comes as a surprise, as it is a direct PayPal competitor.

About 500,000 eBay sellers have tested the new system on the German eBay marketplace. It is not clear yet if eBay plans to change the process on its other marketplaces as well.

What’s your take on the new system?

How To Change, Disable Opera Speed Dial

The question came up here whether it is possible to disable Opera’s built-in Speed Dial feature. Speed Dial displays a number of websites or Speed Dial extensions on the browser’s new tab page. Speed Dial was initially designed as the means to quickly access popular sites right away from the new tab page without having to enter the site’s name first or select the site from the bookmarks. Other browser vendors have started to integrate similar options into their browsers (the last to do are Mozilla with Firefox natively).

Speed Dial extensions are a relative new feature of Opera that allows users to install extensions to display dynamic contents on the browser’s new tab page.

Opera users who want to disable the new tab page, for instance to speed up the opening of new tabs in the browser or because they simply do not use the feature, can disable Speed Dial. The option to do so is however not listed in the options, but in Opera’s advanced configuration listing.

speed dial

The easiest way to open the preference is to load opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialState in the Opera address bar. This should put the focus on the Speed Dial State preference in opera:config.

disable opera speed dial

To change Opera’s Speed Dial functionality or disable it, simply change the value of the parameter. Here are all values and their effect.

0 – This hides the Speed Dial on the new tab page. A Show Speed Dial link is displayed in the lower right corner of the screen. When you click on it, you see the standard Speed Dial tab page again.1 – The standard view mode.2 – Read only mode. This blocks all changes to the Speed Dial display, useful for Kiosk mode for instance.3 – A value of 3 disables Opera’s Speed Dial feature. A blank page is displayed instead.

If you want to disable Opera Speed Dial, change the parameter’s value to 3 and click on the Save button after scrolling down. The changes take effect immediately and without restart of the browser.

Automatically Hide The Mouse Cursor on Inactivity

Have you ever noticed that the mouse cursor tends to get in the way when you are editing text in your operating system or on the web? It happens that the cursor is directly on top of a character or characters on the screen so that these chars cannot be identified properly until you move the cursor away first.

The cursor may also be in your way when you are watching videos on your computer, or reading an ebook, document or spreadsheet.

There is no native option to hide the mouse cursor in the Windows operating system, which means that you either have to rely on third party applications or the manual method of moving the mouse cursor way.

auto hide mouse cusor

Auto Hide Cursor Free is a free application for the Windows operating system that hides the mouse cursor automatically after some time of inactivity. Once you stop using the mouse, you see a timer running down in the application window. When this timer reaches the end, the mouse cursor is automatically hidden on the system.

You can still continue using the keyboard without changing the state of the cursor. The program is a portable application that you can start right after you have unpacked it on your system.

Non-German speakers should click on the LNG button in the footer to change the interface language to English. The timer is set to five seconds by default, which can be changed to a minimum of 3 seconds, or a maximum of 100 seconds. The new grace period becomes available immediately after that modification has been made.

You can add the program to the start of the operating system, configure it to be always on top, or automatically hidden in the system tray whenever it is started.

Auto Hide Mouse Cursor uses little memory and cpu when it is running. The program is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It can be downloaded from the author’s Software OK website.

Google Privacy Blocks Websites From Tracking You

Privacy has moved into the public focus in recent years. Initiatives like Mozilla’s Do Not Track Header try to improve user privacy on the Internet.

Google Privacy is a Firefox add-on that tries to enforce do not track on popular websites. The name may suggest that the add-on has been created by Google but that is not the case. It is likely that it concentrated on Google in the beginning, and that support for other websites have been added later on in development.

Google Privacy currently supports Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, Facebook and Ask. The basic idea behind the add-on is to modify links on those websites to remove tracking functionality from them. It should be noted at this point that the sites still have options to track users through other means, for instance with JavaScript running on the site or analysis of web traffic.

First thing you may want to do after installing the add-on and restarting the browser is to look at the options it provides.

website privacy

General options are displayed on the left and site specific options on the right. The extension by default displays small icons next to each link that indicates whether the link is a tracking link or not. Green icons indicate links that respect the privacy, while red icons indicate those that do not.

Both the original link and its modified version can be displayed at the same time. It is alternatively possible to hide tracking links automatically so that only safe links are displayed on the supported sites.

The websites listing can be used to enable or disable tracking on links that point to the same website, and to block the tracking of every click on links on the web page instead. The latter could have an impact on the site’s functionality though.

If you are concerned about your privacy online, you might want to take Google Privacy for Firefox for a test drive.

The add-ons concentration on six major companies limits its reach significantly. It is therefor recommended to install additional extensions to make up for that limitation. RequestPolicy is a good start, or the excellent NoScript add-on.

Boot To Gecko, Something To Get Excited About?

When I first heard about Mozilla’s new project, Boot To Gecko (B2G), an open source operating system for smartphones, I initially thought that Mozilla should better spend the resources on the Firefox web browser.

Now that I have read more about it and viewed a demonstration on YouTube, I have to admit that my stance has changed. While I cannot say that Boot 2 Gecko will be successful or widely adopted, I do see the potential that it has.

When you look at the smartphone landscape currently, you see a few dominating operating systems, namely Android, iOS and maybe even Symbian (even though Symbian will drop like a stone in the future and Windows Phone may take its place). Phones running those operating systems are heavily subsidized in many countries. Instead of paying hundreds of Dollars for the phone, you pay less in cash because of this. This does not mean that the phone itself is cheap, as you pay a monthly subscription fee and usually have to stay with the mobile company for an extended period of time.

In many third world countries, phones are not subsidized which moves the price up. The majority cannot shell out hundreds of Dollars, or whatever the local currency is, for a phone. That’s why so called feature phones are highly popular in those countries. A feature pone by definition is a phone that is not a smartphone. These feature phones often come with limited Java or BREW support which limits what can be done with the phone.

B2G now could become an alternative in those countries, as it offers smartphone capabilities at a cheaper price. According to Carlos Domingo, Telefonica product development and innovation director, a phone with B2G would be “ten times cheaper than an iPhone”. The main reasons for it being cheaper are that phone’s running it need less processing power than phone’s running many other mobile operating systems, and that the operating system itself is free as well.

The interesting aspect is that the technology relies entirely on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. The mobile OS is actually doing as well as the Firefox web browser in the HTML5 test.

B2G would offer mobile users all the power of HTML5, extended with device capabilities like Bluetooth and SMS, a richer capability model for interaction with the filesystem, and a way to tie these “native HTML5 apps” together. The intent is very much that B2G lead to improved capabilities for the Web platform, not that it replace HTML5 or related tech in any way. Many of these new capabilities will also make sense in desktop browsers, and we look forward to seeing them there as well.

Mozilla showcased a first prototype at the Mobile World Congress that highlighted the capabilities of the phone.

Dropbox Experimental Client Updated, New Web Interface

Dropbox is still working on the next version of their client application, and that version’s big new photo import feature. Dropbox yesterday have updated the experimental client build version to version 1.3.19. The version is available exclusively in the forum, where it can be downloaded for all support operating systems (except mobile clients). The new versions fix a number of issues, among them a fix for an autoplay issue under 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, and a general fix under Windows to support imports from SD cards with no name.

The new version, in addition to that, has seen performance improvements on all platforms. Especially the cpu usage has been reduced during imports. Photos furthermore show up correctly rotated on all platforms now.

Dropbox users who used the experimental build in the past to import photos into their account have received free storage space for that, up to a maximum of 5 Gigabytes. New users, who are using the photo import option for the first time will now only get a maximum of 3 Gigabytes of free space.

Dropbox employee David E. notes that previous users will still get up to 5 Gigabytes of free storage. Both receive the space in 500 Megabytes chunk whenever they import photos into their Dropbox account using the photo import feature. He also mentioned that Dropbox users will keep any additional storage space that they have earned during the beta.

Dropbox users who have already earned the maximum of five additional Gigabytes of storage space will not receive another 3 Gigabytes when they update and use the new client.

Some users are reportedly seeing a new web interface, while others are still seeing the old interface on the Dropbox website. At this point, it is not clear if Dropbox is A-B testing a new user interface, or if the company is rolling out a new interface to all users.

I noticed that it does not display free and used space information directly on the screen. You find the information with a click on your username in the upper right corner of the screen.

Are you seeing the new web interface already? If so, what’s your take on it?

Monk Active Skills And A Few Several Types Of Abilities

Being a monk you'll have three different skill types for your use. Spirit generator and also spender abilities and also mantras. It's your job to balance these three abilities to make yourself the most effective. The concept is that you would be throwing out a number of spirit generator moves in order to save up for one spender move that you unleash at a critical moment. Through the entire fight you need to be using mantras every time they become available to you because they are free of charge.
Spirit generator moves would be the bread and butter of your Monk Active Skills. You will throwing them out just like wildfire the whole time you play, to get that spirit gauge as soon as you can. These Monk Active Skills focus entirely on damage to one or various opponents. As you level up you'll want to have one single target generator capability, like Fists of Thunder, for those strong single targets as well as an AOE, for example Crippling Wave, for those times when you are being swarmed. Having a good mix of spirit generator abilities is the most important skill choice you should make, because they are what you would be utilizing the majority of the time.

Understanding how to utilize your spirit spender skills properly may help carry you by the tougher parts of Diablo 3. Basically of all the Monk Active Skills, the spirit spender abilities are meant to get you from trouble. If you are healing yourself, or perhaps blinding all your enemies and flipping to safety, your spirit spender abilities are good at fending off a group which is overwhelming you.

By keeping up spirit for your time if you need it the most, you will be able to tip an uneven fight back on your behalf. Spirit spender abilities are a mixture of damage and power spells. Some help you do high levels of damage to single or numerous targets, while some are much more situational, throwing out a decoy to distract a team, or allowing you to flip from a surrounding number of enemies for instance.

Mantras are similar to the particular paladins auras of Diablo 2. You could have a single mantra active at a time, but once active they only last a minute before having a 15 second cooldown, which makes them more situational. The mantras buff an aspect of you plus your team mates. You will find mantras that boost defense, evasion, a healing ability and offense. Remembering to turn on the mantra that your group needs could make battles go a lot more smoothly and it also won't cost you anything.

Commercial Outdoor Furniture -Strong and Sturdy Seating Solutions

Dining al fresco is obviously a welcome change from being cooped up inside. When the sun is out, nothing is more relaxing than eating a meal with friends under a big parasol. To ensure your customers' outdoor dining experience is a pleasant one, the commercial outdoor furniture you purchase must be of certain quality and standard.

Before buying commercial outdoor furniture, always research your options. There are numerous models that could cost more than the rest. The type of material will in the end decide the cost of the table or chair you acquire. You just have to evaluate which you can afford prior to putting in an order.

Resin

When you are on a budget, choose resin commercial outdoor furniture. Different types of plastics are used to make this type of furniture. Since this material is malleable, it may be molded into different shapes. Resin furniture pieces are generally used for outdoor patios and decks. It is because it can resist water damage including rotting, molding, and cracking. One problem is that it could warp if you leave it in direct sunlight for very long periods of time. Cleaning is also not a problem. Just use a wet rag to wipe up spills and stains.

Plastic

Plastic is by far the sturdiest you can choose. It is also weatherproof. The only problem you'll have is keeping it clean and looking new. The advantage of plastic commercial outdoor furniture will be the price. Most sets and individual pieces are not going to break your budget. As plastic is lightweight, you will have to weigh it down, especially if you use it with an outdoor umbrella.

Aluminium

A sturdier but more expensive option is aluminium outdoor furniture. There are two types of aluminium to select from. Powder-coated cast aluminium is stronger in comparison to plastic resin. Furthermore, it has more intricate designs. The only thing is it could be expensive. Cast aluminium furniture employs different materials in its construction; examples include glass-top tables or wooden bench slats. If you're searching for furniture that could hold up over time, this can be a good choice.

Wood

In terms of aesthetics, wood is the premiere choice. One type of wood someone can find in a lot of commercial outdoor furniture is cedar. One can find this wood in pieces including swings, gliders, chairs, and benches. You can also get sets and individual pieces if you order directly from a dealer. Wood is easily the most expensive material you can get. It does look and age better than most other types. You simply need to care for it properly.

Mix and match

Sometimes, it is far better to mix and match different pieces. You may have a mixture of plastic, wood, and cast aluminium pieces. Something to keep in mind when shopping is comfort. Make sure that your chairs are comfortable yet practical. You should figure out how often you're going to be using these chairs.

There are many brick and mortar retailers that have this type of furniture. Garden retailers, specialty nurseries, home improvement centres, and pool and spa stores are a handful of the places where you could look. It's also possible to shop at an online commercial hospitality furniture store to see what else is out there.
