Avast Releases Fix Update Utility For Corrupted Installations

The release of Avast 7 has caused anger and confusion in part of the security software’s user base. Especially the fact that Google Chrome was installed in a sneaky way during updates or new installations fueled criticism of the new version. Some users on the other hand reported that the application did not install or update correctly. The installation basically hangs and exits with an error message.

Secunia Personal Software Inspector 3.0. Beta Released

Making sure your system and the software running on it is up to date is one of the things that you need to do to protect it from malicious attacks and malware. And while updating works more or less automatic when it comes to the Windows operating system, the same cannot be said for software that is running on it. Windows 7 and previous Microsoft Windows systems do not include options to scan for and install third party software updates.

This changes only slightly with the release of Windows 8. While it still won’t be able to update desktop applications natively in the operating system, it will be possible to update web apps via Microsoft’s Windows Store.

Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) is a free program that scans the system for programs that are installed in an outdated version.

The developers have just released the first beta version of Secunia PSI 3.0 for Windows. The new version introduces automated patching of applications to the program which makes the updating of software more comfortable and at the same time faster than before.

When you start the program for the first time after installation, you are asked to run a scan on the system. Secunia compares the list of installed software with the latest versions stored in their database. A list of outdated programs are then displayed in the program interface.

Depending on the software, it is now possible to run an automatic update or a manual update. Some applications may require additional information, language for instance, before they can be updated on the system. A manual update usually opens the website of the software developer from where the new version of the program needs to be downloaded and installed manually.

Users of previous Secunia versions may also notice the simplified – some would say minimalistic – user interface. The first screen displays a single scan button on start that needs to be clicked on to run the initial system scan. The next menu lists the software that requires an update, a scan again button and a need help link.

Information that were displayed in previous versions, the threat level of applications that were not up to date for instance, are missing. No option is provided in the beta to switch back to an expert version that displays those information again.

The minimalistic design and concentration on the program’s core feature should appeal to Windows users who use the program to update their software. Experienced users on the other hand will certainly miss some of the features that previous versions of Secunia PSI offered.

Secunia PSI 3.0 is compatible with all recent 32.bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Every new band wants to have a really creative CD packaging for their first album. They want the kind of CD packaging that will turn many heads. Just put your bio and other info on your website. Then focus all your attention to how your CD looks as a product.

Thunderbird Indicators Tell You If A Message Is For You, A Group, Or A Mailing List

You probably know about Gmail’s Indicator setting which adds group and single message indicators to all mail folders. You can enable the feature with a click on the Settings button, the selection of Settings from the context menu and scrolling down on the page until you see the Personal level indicators preference.

The very same feature has now been ported to the Thunderbird desktop email client. The Personal Level Indicators extension for Thunderbird needs to be downloaded from the Mozilla website, before it can be installed manually in the program.

For that, you need to click on Tools > Add-ons to open the add-ons manager, and then on the small button next to the search field in the upper right corner. Select install add-on from file and select the add-on from your hard drive.

This add-on brings Google Mail’s “personal level indicators” feature to Thunderbird. It displays little arrows next the email’s subjects so you can tell if a message was addressed to you, a group, or a mailing list. A single arrow (›) indicates that a message is sent to you, and a group of others. A double arrow (») appears when the message is sent only to you. Arrows won’t appear next to messages sent to a mailing list.

The add-on is installed, but you need to enable it in the interface before it becomes available. Right-click a column in the inbox and select the Personal Level Indicator option there. This enables the feature for the selected inbox. Keep in mind that you need to activate it separately for every folder that you want the extra information to appear.

Why would you want to display the indicator in first place? It may give you a quick overview about each email’s recipients so that you can ignore emails send via mailing lists for instance and concentrate on personal emails instead. It can also be handy to see whether you’d need to use reply or reply all for a particular message.

Samsung SUR40 Microsoft Surface Table – Hands On

I’ve today had a chance to have a play with the new Samsung SUR40 table running the latest version of Microsoft’s Surface operating system.  The table, which starts at $8,400 is now available to buy in 23 countries after being released at the end of last year, but is it any good and would your business want one?

First of all let’s look at the technical specifications.  This table contains a 40 inch 50-point touch screen running at a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels.  It runs on an AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-Core Processor running at 2.9GHz with unspecified memory and the screen is run by an AMD Radeon HD6700M graphics processor.

The table itself is perfectly fine, though it has a slightly metallic, industrial-look and I’m personally looking forward to the time Surface and similar tables become available in wood.  The screen isn’t completely flush with the bezel, creating a slight lip though the screen itself seems perfectly strong enough and handled my slightly wet coffee mug without any complaint.

You might then think that this isn’t be highest resolution or the best processing power you’d expect for over $8k and, to be honest you’d be right.  In general use the interface itself is very responsive, but there were some times when I had to press an onscreen button twice before it responded.

What lets Surface and the SUR40 down is the poor app selection available for the product.  Microsoft have provided generic apps for things like mapping and the Bing app, with it’s separate search and display widgets works extremely well.  It’s never long though before you have done just about everything there is to do on the device and walk away.  Any company wishing to deploy the SUR40 or similar Surface devices will most likely need to develop their own apps, perhaps in conjunction with Microsoft.

The support for RFID connectors on objects, in these case some transparent blocks representing everyday objects works very well.  I really liked this feature and, although the table doesn’t always know which side of it you’re facing, it does a great job of making object rotatable without juddering or pixelation.

I used the first generation of Surface last year when I visited Microsoft’s UK head office.  Comparing the two I prefer the coffee-table approach personally to the full desk, though I can still see occasions when this form-factor would be extremely useful.  All in all the SUR40 is a very fine piece of furniture that would look fantastic in any modern place of business.

As someone who also used the first generation of Surface the technology has clearly come on some way, and the new UI is a significant improvement.  I can’t help feel though that Surface is still a technology that’s looking for a market.  While some businesses will find excellent uses for the SUR40, many more will be put off by the price, the lack of readily available apps and the comparatively weak hardware specification.
