Apple Reveal the all-time Biggest App Downloads

To mark the download of the 25 billionth app from the Apple App Store the company has released a series of all-time top 25 lists for app downloads.  Unsurprisingly games are at the top of the lists in a big way with Angry Birds being the all-time top paid for app, Fruit Ninja at number two then Doodle Jump and Cut the Rope.  Angry Birds Seasons comes in at number 5 and it’s not until we get to number 10 do we get a non-game.

In the free apps it’s different with utilities filling the top spots with Facebook, Pandora Radio, Words with Friends Free and Skype filling the top four places.

Apple invented the App phenomenon which has now spread to every other computing platform including Windows.  The quantity, quality and success of apps is now widely considered as an indicator of the overall success of an operating system.  This is in start contrast to other factors which were important in the past but have faded now.

Apps are also amazingly popular on Google’s Android operating system but have struggled more on the Blackberry Playbook and HP TouchPad (which was discontinued).  While we can be certain that apps in Windows 8 will also be popular the Windows Store is currently fairly barren and it will be many years, if ever, before it catches up with the volume of apps available for iOS and Android.

Stardock’s Start8 Brings Back The Windows 8 Start Menu

With Microsoft’s decision to pull the classic start menu from the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, came a rise of third party solutions to bring back the start menu. We already mentioned that ViStart can add the start menu back to the operating system.

The latest company to announce a free start menu program for Windows 8 is Stardock. Start8, which will be available later this week, adds a start menu back to the Windows 8 desktop. The program has just been announced on the official website.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview is available and has taken the Windows interface to a whole new level. Unfortunately, the preview did not come with a desktop feature that the world makes use of billions times a day, the “Start” menu. Luckily, we have a solution!

Judging from the screenshot, Stardock’s solution copies the Metro search and application launch interface to the desktop. At least the design looks exactly like the Metro Search page layout. According to the product page, the start menu allows you to search for and load applications without switching to Metro first. Stardock in addition has added run and shutdown options to the start menu orb.

Start8 is only compatible with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview right now. Stardock will however update the program to make it compatible with the soon to be released release candidate and final versions of the operating system.

It is too early to tell if this start menu concept will convince Windows 8 users, or if they prefer to install a traditional start menu instead.

Windows 8 users who’d like to be informed when the first version of Start8 gets released can enter their email address on the official website. As I said earlier, it is not necessary considering that the program will be out in the coming days. Just check back on the Stardock website or here on Ghacks, and you can be sure that you won’t miss the release.

Stardock’s implementation looks completely different from the ViStart option. Which option – or none at all – do you prefer and why? (via Caschy)

Update: I just received the download link and have installed the program in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The start orb gets automatically added in the right spot during installation. When you click on the orb, you get a Metro like interface that displays your apps there and the search. It replicates the Metro search options.

You can start typing right away to find apps, or click on one to open it directly. A right-click opens a context menu with options to run applications or shutdown the computer.

The interface is as responsive as the Metro UI interface when it comes to searching and starting applications. Interested users can download the program from this location.

Adobe Releases Flash Player Security Update to 11.1.102.63

Adobe today has published an update for Flash Player that brings the current version of the product to 11.1.102.63 on the desktop, and version 11.1.111.7 on Android devices. Adobe classifies the update as a priority 2 update that fixes several critical security vulnerabilities that have been discovered earlier in the product. Priority 2 is the second highest priority rating, and critical the highest severity rating.

[A priority 2] update resolves vulnerabilities in a product that has historically been at elevated risk. There are currently no known exploits. Based on previous experience, we do not anticipate exploits are imminent. As a best practice, Adobe recommends administrators install the update soon (for instance, within 30 days).

The vulnerability affects all previous versions of Adobe Flash Player for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, as well as previous versions of Flash Player for Android.

The vulnerabilities can be used by attackers to cause a crash on the target system running vulnerable versions of Flash, to take control of the affected system. Adobe recommends that users update their Flash Player version to the latest version as soon as possible to protect their system vulnerability exploits.

Flash users who do not know which version of the product they have installed, should visit Adobe’s About Flash page to find out. Flash Player needs updating if the version displayed is lower than 11.1.102.63 for a desktop system, and lower than 11.1.111.7 for Android systems.

Desktop users can visit the Get Flash Player website to download the latest version of the product from the Adobe website. Keep in mind that you need to close all open web browsers before you can complete the update of Flash Player on the system. The Google Chrome browser is updated automatically via Google Update, an update for that browser alone is not necessary.

Adobe furthermore has made available an update to Flash Player 10 users who, for whatever reason, cannot update to Flash Player 11. The update resolves the security issue on their system. It can be downloaded here.

Finding maps and driving directions online only makes sense. The popular map sites have current changes updated in real time, and even feature traffic reports so that you can better plan your route. Getting reliable step by step directions will make any trip easier. The only thing left to decide is where to get your directions from. So with Yahoo Maps, MapQuest and Google all competing for our attention, which map site will reign supreme?

Basic Directions

First we’ll look at providing simple directions, as this is what most of us are looking for when we visit one of these sites. If you’re concerned about traffic, construction or other hazards, Yahoo Driving Directions is the best choice. MapQuest score some points by letting users avoid highways; take the shortest distance, or the route with the shortest time. It is also very intuitive and easy to use, which is good if you’re in a hurry to get your directions and hit the road.

MapQuest also has a cool drag and drop menu that Yahoo has also had, making it easier to plan your trip around traffic blockages. For those walking or jogging, Ask and Google are the only sites that currently lets users plot pedestrian courses. Google Maps has a handy feature that allows users to zoom in for topographical views, which some may find useful. In summary, use Yahoo Driving Directions when construction and heavy traffic are a concern, and MapQuest is usually best for quick, simple directions.

Sightseeing

So which is the best choice for sightseeing? MapQuest currently lacks the ability to show users satellite images, though it does allow you to plot multiple points around an address to pick a good route for your sightseeing tour. Google is a heavyweight here, and can show you close up views from continents all over the world.

Yahoo Driving Directions also provides satellite images of remote locations, but Ask and Google have higher resolution displays. There are even websites which allow visitors to go on amazing sightseeing tours around the world from their laptops using Google’s satellite images.

A New Contender

Another site I want to touch on here is the new kid on the block, Microsoft Windows Live Local. It allows users to place pushpins at their favorite locations, upload photos to their own websites, and record notes. It also has some impressive features similar to Google including a map creator function, full traffic reporting in real time, and complete tours of popular sightseeing landmarks. Perhaps its coolest feature is that it allows users to take 3-D tours of different cities. It seems Microsoft has attempted to take the best features from the other sites and give them a run for their money. So far, they are holding their own, but I still favor Yahoo Driving Directions overall.

If you’re the type who likes to experiment for yourself rather than taking the word of some hack typing away at his keyboard, there’s a quick and easy way to determine which of the map sites out there will be best for your needs. Go to each site, and request directions for a route you know very well and travel regularly. Choose a route that has obstacles like ongoing construction, or that uses highways with lots of traffic at certain times of the day. In other words, challenge the mapping programs as much as possible. From experience, you will know the best route to take at the time of day you’re requesting directions for, so let’s see if any of the map sites know your city as well as you do!  Spend some time looking at satellite maps and searching for obstacles. After a few minutes on each site, you’ll see which of the sites gives you the best directions and has the best maps. For my area, Yahoo Driving Directions provided the best overall results, and actually taught me some shortcuts that I was previously unaware of.

The Google Map site, MapQuest, and Yahoo Driving Directions are all pretty close when it comes to mapping solutions, with Google maps showing a slight advantage over the other two in the eyes of users. Users who favor Google say the interface is the fastest and easiest to use, prompting users with an address search field, and a field to get directions with one click. Users also have the ability to alternate between street map views, traffic map views or satellite map views. There is even a 360-degree street view available in some cases.

Yahoo Driving Directions is still the site I choose most often, but there are times when Google’s advanced features are a better choice. Despite coming in third overall in user satisfaction behind Google and MapQuest, Yahoo driving directions is quite comparable to the other map sites, offering simple menu options, two search boxes to minimize clicks, and good satellite imagery. When experimenting myself, I found Yahoo driving directions and Google Maps gave me the same route almost every time

In summary, the big three contenders Google Maps, MapQuest and Yahoo Driving Directions all include a host of great features, and are all highly rated by users. Google has a slight edge with their intuitive interface and advanced satellite imagery, but both Yahoo Driving Directions and MapQuest are holding their own. Nipping at their heels, Microsoft Windows Live Local has introduced some great features of their own, and may make this a four way race in the near future.

What’s Next?

The development teams behind the map and driving directions sites are currently exploring ways to integrate their mapping functions in with other projects. “My Tracks”, for example, allows users to create pedestrian maps for walking/biking/jogging routes and use your mobile device as a GPS system, after which you can save your map to Google Docs. Google Maps is also now accessible through users’ Gmail accounts.

We’re sure to see exciting new developments from mapping and driving directions sites like Google Maps and Yahoo Driving Directions and others, as the four major sites (5 if you include Ask) will all be vying for attention from users. Expect to see improved features and more intuitive control panels which allow users to get what they want very quickly from almost any device that connects to the internet in the coming months.

Doom The Roguelike [Game Saturday]

I have to admit that I never played the original Doom much, most likely because I was still playing games on my Amiga back then, and not on the PC.

Doom The Roguelike is a rogue game set in the Doom universe. The game has been out for years, but has received a huge graphics update just a few days ago. Rogue-like games are named after Rogue, the first game of the genre that started the craze. They are basically dungeon crawling games with rpg elements.

In Doom The Roguelike you get to choose between three starting characters, the tough marine, the fast scout and the tinkering technician, and a starting trait. These traits makes you faster, do more damage or give you other advantages that you need to beat the game.

You start the game with one Experience point, full health, a weak six shoot pistol and no armor. You move around with the cursor keys or by clicking the mouse. The most important keys on the keyboard are f (or left-mouse button while hovering over enemies) for firing your currently equipped weapon, tab to toggle between enemies, i for your inventory and ? for game instructions and all controls. You can use the 1-0? keys to quickly switch between weapons, S to save the game when you are standing on stairs to the next level.

Saving is recommended as you will die in this game, especially if you are playing one of the harder difficulties. You always need to keep a good eye on your health and weapon to make sure you are well prepared for all the mean things the game throws at you.

Doom The Roguelike is an incredible game, especially for gamers who like dungeon crawling types of games. Best of all? It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux systems.
