Windows 8 Is Not Intuitive To Use, At Least For Now

Have you ever watched someone with little computing experience use a computer? If you ever worked tech support or are the go-to guy when tech issues come up, you probably know what I’m talking about. Their way of using a computer is often fundamentally different from ours.

Most use a limited number of apps and techniques to get the things done that they need to do. Most ignore the keyboard when they do not have to enter text into an email, Word or Excel, and rely on the start menu and the desktop to load their applications.

I just watched the “How Real People Will Use Windows 8? video on YouTube, and it once again reminded me of what regular Windows users will go through once they upgrade to Windows 8, or buy a new PC that ships with the operating system.

Here is a short summary if you do not want to watch it. Chris Pirillo’s father is trying out Windows 8 for the first time, and tries to figure out for most of the video how to get back to the Metro Start page that he saw in the beginning (and his mean son does not explain to him how it’s done).

You probably know that Microsoft has done away with the start button in Windows 8, and that the operating system comes with a new Metro user interface that is optimized for tablet PCs.

Microsoft has released two public preview versions of the operating system. First the Windows 8 Developer Preview, which still sported a small start menu, and then the Consumer Preview without the start menu.

Both versions shared that they did not offer any visual clues on how to use the “hidden” control options. Experienced users might try the keyboard when they cannot find any clues on the desktop, and many will try the Windows key as they may remember that it opened the start menu back in previous versions of Windows.

But moving the mouse to the lower right (or upper right) corner of the screen to bring up the Charms bar? That’s more likely discovered by accident. The bar is another new concept in Windows 8, linking to the start page, control panel, or power options among other things.

Windows 8 users can also move the mouse cursor to the lower left corner of the screen to display a start page thumbnail that they can click on.

While it is likely that Microsoft will play a tutorial on first start, and maybe even add visual clues to the operating system, it is not written in stone that they will. But how would Windows 8 users find out about the hidden controls otherwise?

Maybe the release candidate will have the answers that we are looking for. For now, Windows 8 is not as intuitive to use as it needs to be.

Hubris [Game Saturday]

Games that take you on a journey seem to have become popular in recent days. First the release of Dear Esther which some says is a master piece, and others boring as hell, then Journey for the Playstation 3, and now Hubris. Hubris, unlike the other two games mentioned here, is a freeware game that you can download and play if you have access to a Windows PC. The game uses Unreal engine technology, and requires installation before you can get started.

The game itself is even more minimalistic than Dear Esther, as it comes without narratives or interaction. The only controls that you have are the wasd (or cursor) keys to walk. The only other control that you have is the mouse, which you use to look around in the game. You do not see who is walking, or understand why you are where you are. The game itself is more about the visuals, which probably remind you of ancient Egyptian structures, as the game has a particular sandy feeling to it.

hubris

Sound-wise, there is only the sound of wind, no background music or other distracting effects that might irritate you or get you out of this meditation-like state you are in when walking around. The game itself can be very soothing and calming, if you let it get to you.

If you do not, you probably do not see a reason installing and playing it in the first time, as it is definitely not one of those action games that throw new stuff at you every ten seconds or so.

You cannot die in the game, but you can fall and need to restart. The game itself is rather short, and it appears to end rather abruptly after a while. It opens up in a window with no options to go fullscreen. As there is no menu or interface, your only option to get out is the Windows key.

If you are interested in the game, you can download it from the Indie Database. It has a size of about 250 Megabytes. Here is a video of the game in case you need more visuals to make a decision about that.

Keyboard Training, A Playful Typing Tutor

Improving your typing speed and accuracy can really speed up your day to day computer activities. Instead of using the one-finger method to hover like a hawk over the keyboard, you could improve your performance with the help of typing tutors. These programs help you improve your typing speed and accuracy. Depending on the program, they show you how to place your hands over the keyboard and which finger is linked to which key on the keyboard.

Excellent programs for this task are the Online Typing Tutor which visualizes this nicely, or the desktop apps Rapidtyping or Bruce’s Unusual Typing Wizard.

Keyboard Training is a lightweight typing software for the Windows operating system that’s packs the training into a little game. When you start the portable program you are presented with a minimalistic keyboard (azerty layout by default, option to change to qwerty in the options).

keyboard training

A click on keyboard training > new game starts the game. Your only task is to hit the highlighted letter before the time runs out. Whenever you hit the correct letter, you increase your overall score. When you miss or when the time runs out, it is game over. The game is set to easy difficulty by default, which gives you 20 seconds to hit the right key on the keyboard. Three additional difficulty levels are available which reduce the available time to hit the correct key on the virtual keyboard.

The biggest issues with this approach is that the program does not support a full keyboard, and that you do not learn how to position your hands to type on the keyboard. The one-finger method works as fine as the ten-finger method, at least for the easier difficulty levels.

If you are serious about learning to type, I suggest you take a look at some of the alternatives listed above. If you prefer a minimalistic playful experience, you might want to download and try out Keyboard Training instead.

Online Fun With Bing Games

Online games are a wonderful way to pass time or keep yourself amused, especially when you’re bored or just want a break from the hustle and bustle of work.

Generally, these games are pretty simple in concept, and can hold ones attention for a considerable period of time. In most cases, the simpler or easier a game is, the more addicting it can become.

Nowadays, there are number of sites where you can play games online including Bing, Google and a host of others. Bing games are actually very well designed and quite engaging. A few minutes of playing can easily lead to an all out online addiction!

Bing games are classified into seven different categories –Arcade, Puzzle, Casino, Word, Action, Word and Card. In this article I’ll go over some of the most popular and surfers’ favorite Bing games, so buckle up and let’s have a little fun with Bing games.

Here are some of the top and most popular Bing games:
Bejeweled 2

bejeweled 2

Unless you live in a cave, you probably have at least seen or played one of the series of Bejeweled games before now. This new game is the sequel of the previous Bejeweled series, but it is bigger and better than the previous versions. To succeed at Bejeweled, you would have to switch two adjacent pieces to form a chain of glittering gems. You can test your raw brain power a little bit by trying the various game modes. Bejeweled has earned its popularity, and continues to be a favorite choice among Bing game enthusiasts.
8-Ball Champion

8 ball champion

Amongst the different Bing games, 8-ball is one of the more deceitfully addicting choices. To play this game, you must venture into the virtual pool hall and put your pool chops to test. 8-Ball Champion very closely replicates a standard computer game of 8-ball. If you are a clever shooter, you can clear the table up in a twinkle of an eye. 8-Ball Champion actually makes you feel like you’re at the pool hall, without the smoky atmosphere and danger of getting into a bar fight. If you’ve ever enjoyed a friendly game of pool, I highly recommend giving it a try.
Fishdom H2O: Hidden Odyssey

fishdom

This game is one of the more popular Bing games you’ll find online, hence its inclusion in this piece. You play Hidden Odyssey by creating a dream aquarium. You will have to dig up a number of hidden objects to gain points, which allows you to purchase mysterious creatures, select tank accessories, and take care of your underwater pets. If hunting for buried treasure sounds fun, and you enjoy the calming aesthetics of a nice aquarium, Fishdom H20: Hidden Odyssey is one you should add to your list.
Plants vs. Zombies

Not exactly two things you’d expect to be part of the same game, but Bing games are full of surprises, and in Plants vs. Zombies, they are indeed pleasant ones. This is another Bing game in which you need to guard your home with several zombie-zapping plants. Attack the undead by cleverly and swiftly planting cherry bombs, peashooters and some other kinds of plants all over the board. I don’t know who came up with the idea of pitting zombies against Venus fly traps, but this game offers hours of fun, and deserves its place on the list.
Zuma’s Revenge

zumas revenge

Amongst the various Bing games, Zuma’s Revenge is one of the more commonly played and is a favorite on many online gamers. The object of the game is to shoot several colored balls into one another, so as to reduce the chain and prevent it from getting to the other end. Zuma’s Revenge is a classic game that tends to get more complex as the play progresses, but the player gets help in the form of special combos and shots. The challenges get more exciting with each round; making this quite an addictive choice, so consider yourself forewarned.

Talismania

talismania

The main goal of playing this game is to assist Midas fight mythical monsters and end an ancient spell. This is done by pivoting tiles and connecting Talismans to make coins. Then you have to cram the scale with coins to finish each game level. The graphics are great and the monsters get more ferocious as the game goes on. A few rounds of Talismania will have you feeling like Persius in the Clash of the Titans.
Text Twist 2

text twist 2

This is a word-based game that tests your level of vocabulary. Just like the regular scrabble game, you get a bunch of randomly selected letters to form words. Put your vocabulary skills to test and see how many points you can score with your words. It can be more difficult than it sounds when you’re stuck with limited letters to work with, but it offers great brain-testing fun. If played with the goal in mind, Text Twist 2 can improve your vocabulary and spelling ability while you play, making it a great choice for students of all ages.
GardenScapes

gardenscapes
Gardening games are huge now, and this is a garden related game where you are rewarded for growing magnificent plants and vegetables. GardenScapes allows you to sell hidden items from a mansion estate to make more money and restore the landscape to its earlier glory. Create your own lawn’s layout, tailor with accessories, and finish in the Best Garden challenge with the assistance of Austin the Butter. This is a great choice for garden enthusiasts, especially during the winter months when traditional gardening is put on hold.

Bing games offer something for everyone, so next time you’re looking for a little online game entertainment, give some of the above mentioned games a try and see which becomes your new favorite. They are all pretty easy to learn, and have fun graphics and sound effects that quickly get you hooked. You’re bound to find one you like form the list above. Get friends and family members to play as well, as this will make it more fun for everyone.

Please note: Some of the games on Bing Games contain in-game advertisement, while others may be limited in functionality. There is however usually at least one game mode that you can play for as long as you want.

Have you ever played games on Bing? Or do you prefer a different gaming site for that?

Mozilla Retires Add-on Collector

Remember the Firefox collections feature? No? Then you are not the only one. Back in 2009 Mozilla introduced collections to the official Firefox Add-ons repository. With this feature users could create their own add-on collections, and publish them  publicly on the Mozilla website. A collection usually listed between 5 and 30 different add-ons that other Firefox users could then install more comfortably in the browser.

There was no option to install all add-ons in one go though, but a third party add-on Massive Extender made that possible.  The collections in theory were quite useful, as many were curated by Firefox users in the know.  Mozilla itself created a few, for web developers and travelers for instance, and other users added theirs which soon became popular as well.

One of the issues here was that the creator of the collection had to maintain the list. Add-ons that were not updated anymore or even entirely removed by their author or Mozilla from the Add-ons repository had to be removed, new add-ons had to be added and so on.

firefox collections

Mozilla yesterday announced that it has made the decision to retire the Add-on Collector. The core reason for retiring the extension are the following:

The add-on is not popular, only “a few hundred people have used the add-on in the past few months”.The Add-on Collector would need a rewrite of all APIs once Mozilla goes forward with plans to improve the collections feature. Some of the features that the add-on offered were already integrated into the site natively.

Firefox users should not confuse the Add-on Collector add-on, with the collections feature itself. From the announcement it is clear, that Mozilla plans to retire the former and improve the latter.

Have you used collections in the past? If so, which features would you like to see to make the feature more attractive and usable? (via Techdows)

5 simple and easy suggestions to help you pick a palm or tarot card reader for your next corporate or private event.

I'd like to share with you a few simple, easy, yet very important things to look for in selecting a palm or tarot card reader for your next party or event. You want your guests feeling great after the reading, and that the entertainment really enhances the special occasion.

1. You'd want to pick an entertainer that clearly likes people. Seems simple, yet like any business, some people just do it for the money. The best way, I think you can tell this, is how they speak over the phone. Are they happy to hear from you? Do they sound sincere? Do they really want to help you make the event unforgettable and special?

2. Pick someone that specializes in fun readings. You'd want a reader that is good enough to specialize in doing readings. Lots of entertainers are jacks of all trades. They are fire eaters, clowns, singers and on some weekends they're plumbers. As with anything, it's better to work with a specialist. You don't want someone that is a lung surgeon during the week and a short order cook on weekends. As the old saying goes: "Frank Sinatra doesn't move pianos."

3. Someone that is passionate about what they are doing. Have they written books or articles? Do they have lots of testimonials? Are they always trying to get better? Do they sound like they love what they do? Simple things, I know, but so important. You'd want an entertainer that loves what he or she does.

4. If possible meet in person. We've all seen great websites. Yet, the best way to really know is to meet them in person. Maybe get a fun reading yourself or for a few co-workers. This is not always possible, but when it is, it is a good idea.

5. Someone that isn't too cheap. Ok, Ok. This may sound little self-serving. It's honestly really not. As I'm sure you already know, the very best of anything in the world, may cost a little extra money. The entertainment is a big part of the success of your parties and events. Would you hire a heart surgeon that charges $50 bucks for a procedure? Of course not. How good could he or she be? This is a tricky one, everyone wants to save money. Use your good judgment and maybe a little of your intuition on this one.

Hope these few suggestions help you. Getting the right entertainment for your special events can be a little bit of a challenge. I'm sure you'll do a great job. Good luck and I wish you all the best.

Eric Lindsey discovered his psychic gifts at early age. At 9 years old he would pick up on the thought and feelings of his family and friends.

Today he is a feel good palm and tarot card reader for corporations and private parties. He also does private readings for a few select clients.

Massive Discounts on Football Team Kits at Football Stop - Cheap Football Kits for every club and fan - New Football Kits for your Saturday side are

As a young boy, one of my earliest and fondest memories is buying my favourite team's latest Football Team Kits. Football Stop stock lots of Cheap Football Kits for teams from around the planet, both domestic and international. Football Stop have a large selection of the Best New Football Kits on the market today.

From as early as I can remember, I have been a Tottenham Hotspur follower. It has not usually been a happy place to be, and it is only in recent seasons that Spurs fans have been able to hold their heads high and enjoy the title of being the actual best side in London, thanks in huge part to the legend that is Harry Redknapp. What will become of us after he leaves for the England position is anyones guess. A little worrying to be honest, but fingers crossed, whoever comes in can carry on his ethos and push us further forward. My personal favourite replacement would have to be Brendan Rodgers from Swansea City, or Martinez from Wigan Athletic. Both managers are cut from the same cloth as Redknapp and are clearly excellant man-managers. Both are also alot younger than Redknapp, and so should have years of improvements and growth ahead of them. The job that Martinez started at Swansea and now is doing at Wigan, with next to no funding, is beyond belief. It is alot like a Saturday side from my local League finding themselves in the Blue Square Premier...and avoiding relegation for years, even though they are financially inferior and with a massively weaker squad than all the other sides in the league. Simply outstanding management!

Football Stop stocks the latest Football Team Kits and Best New Football Kits from all the sides across the planet, from the biggest club sides to the smallest international teams. If the kits are produced, then they are available to buy via Football Stop. It is not only the more obvious Football Team Kits that can be sourced from Football Stop however. Cheap Football Kits are also available for purchase, maybe for your Sunday amateur side. The side I play for wears a dark Blue Nike top with the white V shape on the chest. It is actually the exact same top as worn by another side I like to follow, Southend United FC. Obviousley, our tops do not have the sponsorship that the Southend tops feature, but when we bulk bought them from Football Stop, we got a very generous discount. Always a very attractive feature to any tightly funded amateur football team. At that level, it is all about the enjoyment afterall.

Joe Pearce - Football Stop have a lot of Football Team Kits and they are a perfect gift to buy for the football fan in your life. We have the perfectCheap Football Kits. You can also Buy New Football Kits at Football Stop.

Safe For Firefox Visualizes Secure Connections In The Browser

The Firefox web browser displays several indicators in the browser interface when you are connected to a secure website (using SSL). The first indicator is the https protocol in front of the web address instead of the http protocol. The second that the company, website or service name is displayed in front of the address, and that it is highlighted in color.

Firefox distinguishes between standard secure connections, and sites that use Extended Validation certificates. The former are highlighted in blue, while the latter in green in the browser. (see Visualize blue https sites in Firefox 3 in a better way)

If you do not pay attention to the address bar though, you may not realize if you are on a secure page or not. This can for instance be the case if you have opened the service or page with a click on a link or from the bookmarks, instead of having entered it manually in the browser.

The Safe extension for the Firefox web browser makes SSL and extended SSL connections more visible in the browser. The add-on adds two new indicators. It first paints a green or blue border around the page, which indicates that the connection to the site is secure. Some users may find the border to be a bit on the thick site. The options offer a setting to reduce the border’s thickness.

The second indicator is the site’s tab in the Firefox tabbar. It is also painted in blue or green to indicate the secure connection. What makes this special is the fact that you can now see which of the sites you have open in the browser are making use of SSL or extended SSL, and which are not.

safe ssl firefox

You can configure the program to display a notification if sign in forms are submitting passwords insecurely. According to the add-on description on Mozilla, it will furthermore detect if a website is “using a secure method to handle form submissions”. This is indicated in the statusbar when “a user hovers over a button”. This feature did not work properly during tests.

Safe improves the visibility of secure sites in the browser. Too bad that the secure form indicator is not working properly currently.
