Auto Refresh Select Tabs In The Firefox Web Browser

Have you ever been on a website where you waited for something to happen? Maybe it was on the Yahoo Mail website where you have been waiting for the registration confirmation email of a service that you just registered with, or you are on eBay waiting for the auction to end. If you are impatient, you may have tapped on the F5 key every few seconds to reload the page to see if anything has changed yet.

That’s fine and doable if you are waiting for one page to reload with the information you are looking for, but what if you are monitoring two auctions on eBay?

That’s where Auto Refresh for the Firefox web browser may help you out with. The free add-on allows you to refresh individual pages or groups of pages in select intervals.

A right-click on a page opens the context menu with the new Auto Refresh entry added to it. Here you can enable the automatic reloading of the current page, or all open tabs of the browser. You can select the reload interval here as well, ranging from every 2 seconds to once per hour. The interval can be randomized to make it look more natural.

auto refresh

The intervals can be edited in the add-on preferences to suite individual needs. You can furthermore switch from standard refresh to hard refresh. While not explained anywhere, it is likely that the latter bypasses the browser cache to request all information from the web server the page is hosted on again.

Auto Refresh adds an icon to the status bar which links to the add-on preferences and instructions on the developer website. This icon can be disabled in the preferences.

The Firefox extension can be quite useful for users who often encounter situations where they need to reload pages until information on these pages change. It can also be handy on news aggregators like Reddit or forums like 4Chan to keep up with new links and information posted on the sites.

Three Hints on How to Write a Song

3 Tricks on How to Write a Song

Writing songs isn't as daunting or difficult a task as you might imagine. The absolute best means to improve as a songwriter is both by way of repetition and through utilizing proper tips and tricks. In this article I will talk about how to write a song from the ground up.

First off, it really is much easier if you have got experience with playing a chorded instrument or in other words an instrument that plays chords such as the guitar or piano. This makes coming up with your hooks and subsequently the rest of your song a lot less complicated and a bit of music knowledge helps, too. I'll put in a web link at the conclusion of this article on some very advantageous resources for doing only that.

Now think of a song title for your song. That is a valuable way to come up with your initial hook for your song. Create your title and then assign varying notes to each one of the words or syllables for those words. You can either hum each note per syllable or sing the words themselves. Keep messing with varying notes until you find a melody that you like.

This is where it first helps to have the ability to play chords on top of of your potential hook. Trying various chord progressions helps you come up with a melody idea and additionally it lets you work out varying progressions until you hit upon the best sounding one to join with that section.

This can be important as after you narrow down the chords you'll be utilizing for that hook that will probably compose the majority of that piece of your song (whether that is a chorus, verse, etc.), you can make note of which chords within the key you are playing in you have not used. This is important in coming up with adjoining parts of your song. It really is very refreshing to the ear to hear a chord which it has not noticed yet so that you can use this to your advantage.

For example, if your chorus is a standard 1 5 6 4 (also known as the four chord wonder) chord progression, then you can concentrate on either a chord which you have not used yet for the verse such as a 2 or a 3, or otherwise you can build a verse section which ignores the major 1 altogether and keeps that for the chorus section, playing with your listener until the point where you get to the big payoff which is the chorus. This is utilized in pop songs on a regular basis; even if the major 1 makes an appearance somewhere prior to the chorus, it is definitely not the focus such as it is when you reach that 1 5 6 4.

We have barely scratched the surface in this article so I seriously encourage you to enroll in my FREE 5 Day Songwriting Boot Camp. You can join for free by clicking on this link for how can i write a song; all you have to do is to input your name and email address in the pop up to receive the course and you will make huge moves in songwriting in just 5 days guaranteed.

Writing songs is not as challenging or daunting a job as you may believe. The greatest means to improve as a songwriter is both through practice and by way of utilizing smart tips and tricks. In this article I am going to talk about how to write a song from the ground up.

TabMemFree, Unload Websites In Chrome To Free Up Resources

Websites that you have opened in tabs in your favorite browser use system resources as long as they are open. Some may even be active in the background. Facebook for instance displays the number of notifications in the title tab, and some other sites might play music or a video in the background. This all sums up, and if you have a lot of tabs open, you may feel the strain especially on slower systems.

TabMemFree for Chrome does what BarTab did for the Firefox web browser. It automatically puts websites that have not been active for a specific amount of time in sleep mode. This mode unloads the website from memory to free up system resources.

The extension does this by forwarding the tab to an empty page. This happens in the same tab of course, and is indicated to the user by a title change only. Websites can be reactivated with a click on the tab. This basically loads the website anew in the tab. The downside here is that it may take longer for the website to be displayed, as it needs to be loaded and rendered again in the browser.

unload tabs

Tabs that have been put in sleep mode this way stay in the mode even if the browser is closed and opened again. This can have a positive effect on the Chrome browser’s start-up time as less websites need to be loaded.

The extension is currently marked as beta, which means that it may be unstable on some systems. The developer notes that users may experience issues with the extension, like losing form data on tabs that go into sleep mode or music or video playback being interrupted when it is coming from a tab in the background. (via Addictive Tips)

TabMemFree currently offers no whitelisting of websites or tabs that you do not want to unload after some time of inactivity. It is likely that the feature gets added in a future version of the extension.

Using Bitlocker in Windows (Best Practice Guide)

If you use a laptop for work, or it you carry important or sensitive data with you then it should be encrypted.  Put simply the repercussions of not using encryption are far too serious to imagine with substantial fines being probably the least significant to a loss of customer and market confidence being the worst.  For a small company though the fines for not complying properly with data protection regulations and leaving information “in the open” can shut a company down.  For the individual you could find that suddenly everything a criminal needs to steal your identity is in the public domain.

Note: Bitlocker can be found in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate editions

There are various encryption technologies available, many great ones for free, but it is becoming more common now for laptops to ship with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chips.  These chips help store encryption keys for Microsoft’s Bitlocker full-disk encryption technology.  Using Bitlocker means that even if a hard disk is physically removed from a computer, the data can never be accessed as the TPM chip on the computer’s motherboard isn’t able to verify the unlock password.

Bitlocker is a highly effective technology but like all encryption it needs to be used with care.  If you have a TPM chip on your computer’s motherboard then the full Bitlocker options are available to you and it is very easy to set up.  In the main Bitlocker window you can choose which drives you want to encrypt.  The main OS drive will always need to be encrypted so you will need to do this first, you cannot encrypt any secondary drives unless the main drive containing your copy of Windows is encrypted first.

Note: Bitlocker does not support dual-boot systems and you will find yourself locked out of your computer regularly under this circumstance.

As with most encryption technologies you will need to keep a copy of your unlock key.  In Windows Vista and Windows 7 you have the choice of keeping it on a USB Pen Drive, as a file or to print it.  Windows 8 adds the option of saving it to SkyDrive.

My personal recommendation, as someone who has used Bitlocker and even been locked out of my own computer by it due to a Startup fault with Windows, is that you should always keep a copy on a USB Pen Drive and a secondary copy in the cloud on a service such as SkyDrive.  If you have a problem starting Windows for whatever reason, as I once did, you will be completely locked out of your computer unless you provide the proper unlock key(s); there will be one for each drive that is encrypted.  You should keep this Pen Drive safe and carry it with you when you go away just in case (though it should always) be kept separate to your laptop for obvious reasons.

The copy in the cloud is there just in case you forget it, lose the Pen Drive or delete the key accidentally.  From the cloud you can download a copy to another Pen Drive that you can then use to start your computer.

Bitlocker also offers additional security options that you might want to consider.  These include automatically unlocking drives when a user logs onto Windows.  If you know the password to access Windows, and that password is itself secure (usually a minimum of 10 characters and a mixture of upper and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols) then this will normally suffice.

For drives containing particularly sensitive data however you can set Bitlocker to require an additional password to unlock the drive, or to require the use of a smart card, if supported by your hardware with a slot loading or contactless smart card reader, to gain access.  This can provide an additional level of security that might be very useful for research, military, health, financial or governmental use.

Remember that if you ever lose your Bitlocker encryption key file(s) you can go back into Bitlocker in Windows and save addition copies.  If you do not then you face the prospect of being locked out of your data forever.  Thus it is always important to use any encryption technology in conjunction with a secure but unencrypted backup.  This might seem folly, but there are ample ways these days to keep very secure backups without them requiring encryption.  Don’t forget that almost no desktop PCs come with TPM chips and neither support nor require the full features of Bitlocker.

As an encryption technology Bitlocker is incredibly secure and for laptops it should be mandated in business.  If your company is buying new or additional laptops soon, then a TPM chip should be very high up on the list of purchasing priorities for each one.  If you use a laptop at home that you carry out and about and can afford the price premium that a TPM chip costs, then the use of Bitlocker is both incredibly simple to use and worth every extra penny for the peace of mind.

YouTube AdsFree For Opera Removes Advertisement On YouTube

Google in recent years has started to add advertisement to the popular video hosting platform YouTube. Ads on YouTube nowadays come in a variety of ways, from sponsored channels to banner ads or in-video advertisement. The video hosting site currently supports two different kinds of in-video ads. First a video ad before the actual video requested by the user, and then ad overlays when the requested video is playing on the screen.

These ads either benefit YouTube and Google completely, or if revenue sharing is enabled, the original uploader of the video as well.

A percentage of the site’s user base may prefer to bypass ads to fully enjoy the contents without overlay images being displayed to them while the video is playing.

YouTube AdsFree is an Opera extension that removes the majority of ads on YouTube. The latest version of the extension blocks the ad servers so that the ads cannot be displayed anymore on the screen. The description lists popup ads as the main ad form that gets blocked. These are the overlay ads when you start watching the videos.

youtube adsfree

The extension furthermore blocks full window ads and promoted ads on YouTube and on websites who have embedded the videos. There is also an option available to remove branded banners, for instance on the VEVO channel, from being displayed on YouTube.

It is not really clear if the ad blocker covers 100% of ads, or if some ad forms remain on the site. While I personally have not seen any video ads before the actual video, it could be that these ads are still shown on YouTube.

Opera users who would like to try out YouTube AdsFree can install the latest version of the extension on the Opera Extensions website.

If you are not using Opera as your main browser, you may be interested in this guide that explains how to skip ads on YouTube.

Private Browsing Without Closing The Active Firefox Session

One of the things that has always annoyed me in regards to Firefox’s private browsing mode was the fact that the browser did close the active session before switching to that mode. And while Firefox offers to save the active session, that is the open tabs and other session related information, it is nowhere near as comfortable as a solution that would spawn a new private browsing window without affecting the active session.

Google Chrome and the Opera web browser handle the private browsing mode this way for instance. When you start the incognito mode in Chrome for instance, you will notice that it spawns in a new window without affecting the old regular browser window.

Private Browsing Windows for the Firefox web browser bypasses the restriction in Firefox. Since it is not possible to override the feature directly to open the private browsing mode in a new window, developer Sören Hentzschel came up with the next best possibility: Use a different Firefox profile to load the private browsing mode window. This way, it is possible to keep the original Firefox window and have the private browsing window appear in a new window at the same time.

private browsing firefox

The extension will automatically use a profile that is labelled as private. It will otherwise launch the built-in Firefox profile manager to provide the user with a selection menu (and an option to create a new profile if only one exists). This profile is then used to load the private browsing window in Firefox. The profile manager pops up every time, unless you change the name of a profile to private.

Private Browsing Windows adds an icon into Firefox’s add-on bar that triggers the extension’s functionality.

Users who try the extension need to keep in mind that they need to close the browser windows in the correct order, to avoid the loading of the wrong profile on the next start.

The extension can be useful for Firefox users who work in the private browsing mode from time to time, and wish that there was a way to keep the regular browser window open when they do.

Learn To Network Better And More Efficiency

Many people want to increase their presence, wether online or in real life. If you live in a large city, you might even be able to do real life face to face networking and interactions. A few examples of great places where you are able to network can be the public speaking club Toastmasters, Kiwanis, or Chammber of Commerce among other higher class events. All you really have to do is start talking to random people while you're lined up, or even when you're sitting down beside certain few people.

Of course networking also takes place online daily. Websites such as Facebook and LinkedIn have allowed those intimidated by face to face networking to effectively increase their networks from the comfort of their office or home quite easily. Some people spend lots of time on these sites weekly or even daily and find great benefits from the time invested. Many times participation in an online discussion or group can lead quite naturally to a networking connection. Networking sites are usually fairly easy to navigate, and many have groups that answer frequently asked questions as to how to setup a profile and adjust privacy settings, drastically reducing the intimidation factor for some.

Volunteering for a local organization is another great way to increase your network. Meeting others with similar convictions while helping a good cause is without a doubt great use of a person's time. This can be a simple as participating in a 5K run for charity or spending time at an organization several times a month, and can result in lasting and meaningful connections with others.

You can also increase your network by talking to those you naturally interact with on a regular basis. Many times people rush from one obligation to another, ignoring those in their path and missing potentially beneficial connections. Stopping to talk with the people you may encounter dropping their child off at karate or gymnastics week after week may not be a bad idea. A simple conversation could eventually lead to a business deal or new career opportunity. All because the time was taken to initiate a conversation.

So who really needs to network? Business owners network to increase exposure to their company. Entrepreneurs network to discuss ideas and strategies with like-minded individuals or seasoned business owners. Salespeople network to bring exposure to their company, and potentially commissions to their bank account. Those new to a city network to meet new friends. Job seekers network to find their next opportunity. Extroverts who live or work alone may network to simply feel energized in a crowd of people.

Attending networking events where you meet others face to face as well as connecting with others online can be beneficial to most people. After all, it can be "all about who you know". So the next time a friend or colleague suggests attending a networking event or creating a profile on a popular social networking site, why not give it a try?

Networking has been very easy for Caitlin Beadles. Feel free to study her charm on Keek.

Mozilla Begins Work on Firefox Metro Version

If you have followed the development progress of Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8 closely, you may know that it ships with two different versions of the Internet Explorer browser. First a standard desktop version of Internet Explorer 10, and then a second version for the new Metro user interface part of the operating system.

This opens up a new predicament for other browser developers as their browsers suddenly only work in one part of the operating system, and not the other. While it is possible to install browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Opera in Windows 8, they only work in the desktop environment and not the Metro UI part of the browser.

Mozilla were the first to announce that they would start to develop a Metro UI compatible version of the Firefox web browser to make the browser available in the Metro interface as well.

Development has begun on the new version, and the developers plan to release a proof of concept demo in the second quarter.

In order to deliver a compelling Firefox for Windows 8 Metro experience, we need to understand what’s possible. A technology proof of concept is the first step. This is not a Alpha or a Beta, but should demonstrate the feasibility of Firefox in Windows 8 Metro. (Timing here is dependent on when Microsoft releases their Windows 8 consumer preview and developer documentation.)

Mozilla developer Brian Bondy revealed additional information about the Metro version of the Firefox browser in a blog post. According to this post, Mozilla can build a Metro browser that is equally powerful as the desktop browser. One restriction seems a bit odd.

Unfortunately a browser can only participate in Metro mode if it is the default browser. So if Firefox is not the default browser on a system, you can’t use it in Metro mode. This is a decision made by Microsoft.

This basically means that Firefox can only be used in the Metro UI if it is the default system browser. It is also not clear at this point in time how the web browser will be distributed.

Mozilla’s move to develop a Metro UI version of Firefox makes sense in a number of ways, including usability and consistency. Firefox users who work with the browser on the desktop, may for instance prefer to access their browser bookmarks and information in the Metro version, instead of having to work with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 10 there.

Game Developer Abandons Android App Citing Unsustainability

The company behind the popular Battleheart game for Google’s Android operating system are ceasing support for the platform citing the unsustainability of the platform in the long term.  In a blog post, Mika Mobile said…

We spent about 20% of our total man-hours last year dealing with Android in one way or another – porting, platform specific bug fixes, customer service, etc.  I would have preferred spending that time on more content for you, but instead I was thanklessly modifying shaders and texture formats to work on different GPUs, or pushing out patches to support new devices without crashing, or walking someone through how to fix an installation that wouldn’t go through.  We spent thousands on various test hardware.  These are the unsung necessities of offering our apps on Android.  Meanwhile, Android sales amounted to around 5% of our revenue for the year, and continues to shrink.  Needless to say, this ratio is unsustainable.

Clearly there is an economic argument here as the company state clearly that they’re not making money, at least not from this one game.  Their problem however is exacerbated by the fact that Android has become such a fractured platform for them, and updates to the OS are coming so quickly that they’re spending too much time updating existing titles to keep them working.  This is cutting into the time they want to spend developing new titles instead.

This raises an interesting question as it should be a simple matter of writing an app and putting it on sale.  This, after all is what happens on iOS and what will happen for Windows 8.  These two platforms are very different from Android though for quite significant reasons.  With Windows 8 all the cross-compatibility work is done by the compiler, which is something Microsoft worked very hard on, and the main operating system itself will not be updated for another three years.  In the case of iOS very little changes and with the new iPad coming next month with it’s higher resolution screen, all upscaling of apps will be handled by the operating system seamlessly in the background.

Under the hood of both of these platforms everything is stable and nothing changes.  Android however is suffering from the fragmentation that being open-source has brought to some Linux distributions with even the creator of Gnome admitting last year that each new distro of the kernel is “breaking APIs all the time”.

In no small part Android is becoming a victim of its own success.  It is nowhere near as tightly controlled as either iOS or Windows 8 with individual hardware makers able to add their own elements to the OS.  This creates device-specific versions of Android, with good examples being the Amazon Kindle Fire and the HTC Flyer, that software makers have to check application compatibility with.

So is this the beginning of a slippery slope for Android?  It is possible that we could eventually find ourselves in a position where tablets begin to crash as software houses write apps that will run on one version of the OS on most tablets but not on one or two specific machines.  It is also possible that many apps will come with a list of supported devices before you buy or download them, and with advice not to update the firmware for risk of breaking the app.

It will be interesting to hear what you think on this.  Do you think Android is unsustainable or do you believe the open-source approach is simply superior to the closed-development that Apple and Microsoft bring to their platforms?  Why not tell us in the comments below.

FixBee, Disk Cleanup and Optimization Software

System maintenance tools have a variety of purposes, from freeing up disk space to defragmenting the hard drive or removing invalid file references from the system. When it comes to tools for the job, you’d probably hear program names like CCleaner, Advanced System Care or Comodo System Cleaner the most.

FixBee is a new contender that is currently concentrating on disk optimization and cleanup only. Lets take a look at the program and its installation process.

Winodws users should pay close attention to the setup, as they’d otherwise end up with a new search provider, homepage and browser toolbar. The program itself opens up in a nice clean interface. The program options are divided into the two tabs Disk Optimizer and System CleanUp.

Disk Optimizer

disk optimizer

You can select the drive that you want to optimize. This basically checks for file fragmentation and runs a defragmention on the selected drive. The program scans the selected hard drive or partition first to display a fragmentation analysis. The analysis displays the number of non-optmized files, the drive’s optimization score, and whether it is recommended to defragment the hard drive.

hard drive fragmentation

The information should help users make the decision whether the drive or partition needs to be optimized or not.

System CleanUp

system cleanup

A start scan now button is displayed that starts the system scan for temporary and junk files to free up disk space. The application offers no filtering options prior to the scan. The results are divided into junk files, temporary files and empty folders. Each item is listed with its name, folder path and file size (if it’s a file). The listing offers no sorting options, or file or folder opening options to check on files.

Both operations can be scheduled to run daily, weekly or once on a specific date and time.

Closing Words

The program lacks options that other programs provide. The overall cleaning efficiency is for instance not as thorough as that of CCleaner, BleachBit or comparable programs. The developers could improve the nice looking program significantly if they’d add more cleanup locations and filtering options.
