How to create Passphrases with KeePass

Passphrases have several advantages over conventional passwords that make them more suitable in a variety of situations. The main distinguishing factor between passphrases and passwords is that the former consist of multiple phrases, which are often words. One of the benefits of this method is that it renders the majority of dictionary attacks useless, as it is unlikely that a phrase like eveningHorizonOwnTestGhacksPlease would be included in a dictionary attack.

Security can be improved further by adding special characters or numbers, for instance by substituting every third e with 3, or adding a space after the tenth character. But protection against dictionary attacks is not the only benefit that passphrases have. They can also be designed to be more memorable than a random password of the same size.

Even if you are using a password manager like KeePass, you may sometimes want to create passphrases, for instance when you sometimes need the password in situations when you do not have access to KeePass.

KeePass is an excellent password manager, and one of its strengths is its extensibility. WordSequence Generator is the name of the plugin that adds passphrase generation support to KeePass.  All that needs to be done to install the plugin is to download it from the Sourceforge project website and extract its contents into the root KeePass directory. KeePass needs to be restarted if it is already open to pick up the new plugin.

The plugin becomes available in KeePass’ Password Generation Options menu. Just select WordSequence under Generate using custom algorithm, and click on the settings button on the right of the line afterwards to configure it.

Here you can then add words to the dictionary that is used to create the passphrases. This step is really important, and while you are at it, you can also check out the generation options on the right. Here you can select the count of words for your passphrases, configure substitutions to increase the security of the phrases, add extra characters to the passphrase, and define capitalization options. The newly generated passphrases become then available in the Preview tab.

Exiting the settings returned an error on a 64-bit system of Windows, but did not seem to have an impact on the program itself. The configuration changes were saved after all.

If you are not using the KeePass password manager but would like to generate secure passphrases from time to time, you could take a closer look at PWGen for the Windows operating system which offers a similar feature set.

Word Sequence can be a useful plugin for KeePass, especially thanks to its advanced generation options that improve the security of the generated passphrase significantly. It is not really a necessary plugin for KeePass users though, considering that it is also possible to simply generate a very long random password instead. Since it is saved in the password manager’s database it does not need to be remembered.

The Beethoven Symphonies

In total Ludwig Van Beethoven wrote nine symphonies. Each one of them is a masterpiece in itself, and all are different from each other, representing a certain stage in the development of Beethoven's musical symphonic language.

Interestingly, no drafts of this composition remain. All that is known about this work is that Beethoven had begun working on the 5th symphony while he was writing this one.

Beethoven's fifth symphony is by far the most well known symphony in the world. Its opening four notes are unmistakable. This work was written in the key of C minor which became known as a "special key for Beethoven" due to its "stormy and heroic tonality". This composition sometimes goes by the name "The Symphony of Destiny".

The Sixth symphony premiered in 1808. Sometimes referred to as the "Pastoral" symphony, contains some of Beethoven's most beautiful writing. In the concert program Beethoven labeled it "Recollections of Country Life." This symphony is in contrast to symphony number five, reflecting the composer's love for nature.

Symphony number seven is widely known as the symphony of dance. The haunting 2nd movement is often encored and performed by itself. This work debuted in 1813

.Symphony number eight is the shortest of Beethoven's symphonic works. It is often referred to as "The Little Symphony in F Major." It is often overlooked, though perfectly fits the platform of 18th century classical writing.

Symphony number nine was Beethoven's last symphonic work. It was completed in 1824 when Beethoven was completely deaf. It is known as "The Symphony of Joy." When Beethoven conducted the premier of this piece, he must have lost his way as he was still conducting the piece when it ended. FreeRecover Is An Open Source Data Recovery Software

Files that get deleted in the Windows operating system are not deleted right away, as they are first moved to the operating system’s recycle bin. You can configure the recycle bin to be bypassed automatically, or by holding down the Shift-key before you start the deletion. But files are even then not deleted right away. FreeRecover is an Open Source data recovery application for the Windows operating system. You can start the program right away on your system after download. It displays the available drives in a selection menu on top. You may want to check the Get file Paths and Check File Integrity check boxes before you hit the search button so that these information are added to the results window right away.

Get File Paths displays the file’s original path on the drive if the information can be recovered, and Check File Integrity returns if the original file is recoverable or not. The scan takes a while, especially on larger hard drives. You can see the information getting filled out during the scan, but the screen remains unresponsive until it completes.

FreeRecover lacks sorting options which makes it less intuitive to use as Recuva or many other file recovery programs. The only sorting option it offers is the file search form at the bottom of the screen. Here you can filter for words, extensions or phrases. A click on a file displays a preview of it in the program window. This can be an image, textual contents or gibberish depending on the file extension.

The first version of FreeRecover shows promise, especially since it is still a beta version. It needs some fine tuning, especially in the sorting and filtering department. Please note that the program requires a version of the Microsoft .NET Framework to be installed on the system.

YouTube Black Theme, A Dark-Style for YouTube

Not every YouTube visitor loves the new layout and design of the popular video hosting website. You may remember that the design has been changed not long ago, moving subscriptions and channels more into the focus on the start page, along with a big flashy ad at the top of the page.

While it was possible back then to restore the old layout of the site, it does not seem possible anymore. The next best thing is to make the best out of the new homepage. You can do that with a bunch of userscripts to improve the functionality on the site, or styles that change the design and layout.

I have for instance reviewed userscripts and browser extension to return the inbox to the frontpage, skip ads on YouTube or hide watched videos on the site.

If you are not a fan of the light design, and liked the earth hour design that YouTube had for some time, then you may like the YouTube Black Theme that you can install as a dark-style for the site.

Here are two screenshots how this theme looks like on the YouTube website. First the frontpage where a darker background has taken over except for the middle part of the site that is listing recent subscription activities.

The second screenshot shows a video page. Unlike on the frontpage, where parts remained in lighter colors, everything has been turned into darker shades on this page.

The theme is provided as a userscript that needs to be installed into the web browser of choice. I was able to test the userscript both in the Firefox web browser with the Greasemonkey extension installed, and the Google Chrome browser. It worked identical in both browsers, and it is likely that it will work in other browsers, like Opera, as well.

Firefox users need to install Greasemonkey first, before they head over to the userscript website to install the script in their browser. Once done, any new page load on YouTube or a new visit to the site will feature the new dark layout. If you prefer to turn off the black theme again you can simply uninstall or disable the userscript to do so.

Changing the style to a darker theme does not change the site’s functionality in any way. It is purely an aesthetic choice.

Windows 8 To Go On Sale In Ocober According To Bloomberg

Microsoft is keeping everyone guessing about the release date of both the Windows 8 RTM version and the final version. Bloomberg (via Windows 8 News) is now citing unnamed sources close to Microsoft that Windows 8 will go on sale “around” October 2012. According to the news article posted on the site, the release will include versions for both Intel and ARM devices.

System manufacturers working with Microsoft will release more than 40 Intel machines running Windows 8, and five ARM devices that run a customized version of the operating system. While not confirmed or denied, it is likely that Microsoft will release the operating system in chunks. If the Windows 7 launch is anything to go by, countries like the United States, Germany, Spain and France would be the first where the operating system would go on sale, followed by other countries over the course of months.

Considering the success of the initial launch of Windows 7, it is likely that Microsoft will mimic the release as closely as possible. While we have not heard of any Windows 8 Family Packs being announced yet, there is a chance that the company will make those available as well. Family Packs contain multiple licenses of the operating system for a reduced price that can be used on different computers in one household (You find more information about Family Packs on Everything Microsoft).

Bloomberg also reports that Microsoft will hold a partner-event in April 2012 where it will provide Microsoft partners with the Windows 8 release strategy.

A Windows 8 release in October would fall directly in line with my 2010 prediction that Windows 8 will be released in that month. Back then I looked at correlations between the Windows 7 development process and an official information that were posted on the Dutch Microsoft site at that time.

Interested in the editions that Microsoft will release? According to Windows 8 News, Microsoft will actually release more editions than were released when Windows 7 came out. This can be mainly attributed to the ARM edition.

What are you going to do if Microsoft will release Windows 8 in October? Will you buy it immediately, wait until a service pack gets released, or will you skip the operating system completely? I for one will wait for the RTM version to be released for testing before I make up my mind. It is however likely that I will buy the Ultimate edition of Windows 8 this time, if the professional edition ships without full Bitlocker support.

How To Sync Firefox Bookmarks and Passwords Privately

Most Firefox users who want to sync data like bookmarks or passwords use the built-in sync feature to do just that. Firefox Sync requires an account, and uses that account to save the data in the cloud. While easy to setup, it means that data is hosted on a third party server that you do not have control over. Most extensions and services that offer third party solutions do the same thing. If you do not want your data to be hosted on a third party service, either because you want to be in full control or because of business regulations, you could check out the Sync Places extensions for the browser.

SyncPlaces, unlike other tools of its kind, allows you to store the data on your own servers. The Firefox add-on can store the data on four different servers:

You need to restart the browser after you have installed the extension. SyncPlaces adds an icon to the browser’s status bar that you can click on to open the options and configure the synchronization.

The configuration option consist of the usual information, server IP, username and password for instance, but also options that let you configure the process. You can configure the extension to synchronize data automatically, at specific times of the day, regularly, or on startup or shutdown. The information can be encrypted and compressed to secure and speed up the transfer, and you can furthermore switch from synchronizing all bookmarks to synchronizing a specific bookmarks folder only. Data can either be merged with what’s stored on the server, or replaced completely.

Takes a backup of your current bookmarks before overwriting them, which you can restore if it all goes wrong. You can also manually take a backup at any time, or restore from this backup.

Bookmarks are stored in JSON or XBEL format. JSON is ideal for all the new Places features (tags, queries etc). XBEL is ideal if you still use Firefox 2 (although you’ll lose the new Places features) or wish to style your bookmarks so you can access them from any browser, or without installing the SyncPlaces extension. You can also send bookmarks in HTML format if you don’t wish to style XBEL yourself.

The core benefit of using SyncPlaces is that you have got full control over both the local installations of Firefox and the server the data is stored on. It in turn means that you need to have access to a server to use the extension at all. While it is possible to use third party servers like the GMX server, it would undo the main purpose the extension has been created for. Firefox users who have issues configuring the extension should check out the author’s support website which offers a collection of tips to get common issues sorted out.

Microsoft Worldwide Telescope is a free application that lets you explore the universe from your local computer. It offers more than a planetarium with its guided tours, free exploration options, communities, extensive search and telescope connection feature. You can launch the application right on the official website, provided that you have Microsoft Silverlight installed, or download a client for the Windows operating system instead. The desktop client has a size of about 70 Megabytes right now. Microsoft recommends a reasonably fast PC with at least 2 Gigabytes of RAM and a 3D accelerated video card, as well as 1 Gigabyte of hard disk space and up to 10 for off-line features and high performance browsing.

The included search can be used to find planets, constellations and everything else you can think of by entering names, or partial names, into the search form. If you are in the know, you can also enter distance, Ra and Dec information.

Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope has just been released in a new version for desktop PCs. Version 3 beta can now be downloaded from the official website. If you are interested in the stars, then I’d suggest you give the application a try, it is great.
