Google Chrome: First Metro version is out

A few days ago I mentioned that Google was about to release the first Metro version of the Chrome browser. As you all know, Windows 8 will ship with two user interaces, the desktop interface that you are all familiar with, and the new Metro interface that is limited in terms of functionality when compared to the desktop. Software developers are now in a position where they need to create special Metro-versions of their applications to support that part of the operating system as well. And while they simply could plant an icon there that launches the desktop version, some believe that it is better to create special Metro versions instead.

Microsoft is for instance providing a copy of Internet Explorer 10 for Metro that is limited in functionality. It for instance does not support plugins, and seems to have been optimized for touch-based devices. Mozilla too has been working on a Metro version of Firefox for some time now and seems to have made great progress so far.

And now it is Google with the company’s Chrome browser. The latest Chrome Dev release is now featuring the first public implementation of the Metro-version of the browser. Windows 8 users who have Chrome Dev installed on the system will notice that the browser is now opening up in Metro when executed there.

The browser itself does not look that different from its desktop counterpart, at least not when you first start it.  What you will notice though is that there are no window controls to maximize, minimize or change the size of the window in the Metro version. You can however use Metro’s feature to drag the Chrome browser to the left or right sidebar of the screen to display another application besides it. The menus seem to be larger and optimized for touch-input.

Themes, extensions and all that good stuff work in Chrome for Metro. What you will notice however is that the Metro version and desktop version of the browser do not share contents or information right now. When you install a theme or extension in Metro, it won’t be available on the desktop and vice versa. The same is true when you sign-in to Chrome, as you need to sign-in in both versions of the browser if you want to use the functionality in both. You can however make use of the browser’s synchronization feature to sync data between the desktop and Metro version.

When you look at the Chrome user directory on Windows 8, you will notice that Metro has its own directory in the root folder. Basically, the two applications are completely independent from each other at this point of development.

Firefox 11 Stable Released

Firefox users who cannot wait to update the stable channel of the web browser from version 10 to 11, can download the new version from the official Mozilla ftp server or third party download sites early. Please note that while it is unlikely that the final version will get replaced in last minute, it has happened in the past. It is recommended to wait for the official release announcement if Firefox is running in a productive environment, or if you do not need to have access to the new feature set introduced in the browser right away.

It will take approximately three days before the internal updater picks up the new version and offers to upgrade the browser automatically. You can check for the installed version with a click on Firefox > Help > About Firefox.

The beta release notes highlight the changes that Mozilla has implemented in the new version of the browser. Probably the biggest feature for end-users is support for add-on synchronization as part of Firefox Sync. This feature can be used to synchronize installed browser add-ons between all versions of the browser where sync is enabled on.

Firefox users who are using Google Chrome as well on the system can now migrate their bookmarks, history and cookies from the browser as part of the migration process.

The majority of features are only interesting for web developers and developers in general. Firefox 11 supports the CSS text-size-adjust property, and the outerHTML property. Anti-Twin, a sophisticated Duplicate File Finder for Windows

Depending on how you store, download and transfer files on your PC, duplicate files may make up a portion of the used disk space on the computer. It is lastly possible to change the threshold for a match from 100% to a lower value. A click on the search button runs the file scan on the selected folders. This may take some time depending on the number of files in those files, the comparison methods, and the performance of the PC. A few tests revealed however that operations are completed rather quickly, even when thousands of files need to be compared.

The results listing displays all matches in the interface, with each match listed with its file name and path, date of creation, and the size it occupies on the hard drive. Here you can now mark individual duplicates for deletion, or let the program make the selection for you.

Here you can again modify parameters for the auto selection of duplicate files:

You can hover your mouse over image duplicates to see  a preview of the image in a small popup window which can be useful for comparison reasons.

Anti-Twin is a sophisticated but still easy to use duplicate file finder for the Windows operating system. It offers different comparison methods, automatic weighting and file filtering, as well as support for a dozen or so different interface languages.  The program is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system. According to the author, it will also run on Linux or Mac if Wine is used.

If there is one thing to criticize it is the lack of updates. The latest program version has been released in Max 2010, and while there are not any issues yet with the program, it can very well be that it will eventually become incompatible with newer versions of Windows. (via Freeware Genius)

How to create Passphrases with KeePass

Passphrases have several advantages over conventional passwords that make them more suitable in a variety of situations. The main distinguishing factor between passphrases and passwords is that the former consist of multiple phrases, which are often words. One of the benefits of this method is that it renders the majority of dictionary attacks useless, as it is unlikely that a phrase like eveningHorizonOwnTestGhacksPlease would be included in a dictionary attack.

Security can be improved further by adding special characters or numbers, for instance by substituting every third e with 3, or adding a space after the tenth character. But protection against dictionary attacks is not the only benefit that passphrases have. They can also be designed to be more memorable than a random password of the same size.

Even if you are using a password manager like KeePass, you may sometimes want to create passphrases, for instance when you sometimes need the password in situations when you do not have access to KeePass.

KeePass is an excellent password manager, and one of its strengths is its extensibility. WordSequence Generator is the name of the plugin that adds passphrase generation support to KeePass.  All that needs to be done to install the plugin is to download it from the Sourceforge project website and extract its contents into the root KeePass directory. KeePass needs to be restarted if it is already open to pick up the new plugin.

The plugin becomes available in KeePass’ Password Generation Options menu. Just select WordSequence under Generate using custom algorithm, and click on the settings button on the right of the line afterwards to configure it.

Here you can then add words to the dictionary that is used to create the passphrases. This step is really important, and while you are at it, you can also check out the generation options on the right. Here you can select the count of words for your passphrases, configure substitutions to increase the security of the phrases, add extra characters to the passphrase, and define capitalization options. The newly generated passphrases become then available in the Preview tab.

Exiting the settings returned an error on a 64-bit system of Windows, but did not seem to have an impact on the program itself. The configuration changes were saved after all.

If you are not using the KeePass password manager but would like to generate secure passphrases from time to time, you could take a closer look at PWGen for the Windows operating system which offers a similar feature set.

Word Sequence can be a useful plugin for KeePass, especially thanks to its advanced generation options that improve the security of the generated passphrase significantly. It is not really a necessary plugin for KeePass users though, considering that it is also possible to simply generate a very long random password instead. Since it is saved in the password manager’s database it does not need to be remembered.

The Beethoven Symphonies

In total Ludwig Van Beethoven wrote nine symphonies. Each one of them is a masterpiece in itself, and all are different from each other, representing a certain stage in the development of Beethoven's musical symphonic language.

Interestingly, no drafts of this composition remain. All that is known about this work is that Beethoven had begun working on the 5th symphony while he was writing this one.

Beethoven's fifth symphony is by far the most well known symphony in the world. Its opening four notes are unmistakable. This work was written in the key of C minor which became known as a "special key for Beethoven" due to its "stormy and heroic tonality". This composition sometimes goes by the name "The Symphony of Destiny".

The Sixth symphony premiered in 1808. Sometimes referred to as the "Pastoral" symphony, contains some of Beethoven's most beautiful writing. In the concert program Beethoven labeled it "Recollections of Country Life." This symphony is in contrast to symphony number five, reflecting the composer's love for nature.

Symphony number seven is widely known as the symphony of dance. The haunting 2nd movement is often encored and performed by itself. This work debuted in 1813

.Symphony number eight is the shortest of Beethoven's symphonic works. It is often referred to as "The Little Symphony in F Major." It is often overlooked, though perfectly fits the platform of 18th century classical writing.

Symphony number nine was Beethoven's last symphonic work. It was completed in 1824 when Beethoven was completely deaf. It is known as "The Symphony of Joy." When Beethoven conducted the premier of this piece, he must have lost his way as he was still conducting the piece when it ended.
