Process Explorer 15.2 with Autostart Information

Sometimes when I double-check on the processes running on my Windows PC I wonder how a particular process managed to get started in first place. The Windows Task Manager does not reveal those information, and while I could try and figure that out by myself, it usually takes some digging through menus and programs to do just that.

I could fire up Autoruns to see if that process is automatically started with the system. Another option has just been added to SysInternal’s excellent Process Explorer. The Task Manager replacement ships with a new autostart column that reveals if a process is automatically started during system boot, and where the information about its autostart are located.

Please note that I have moved the autostart location column to the very left for purposes of creating the screenshot. The listing is not enabled by default, so let me show you how to add the column in the program.

Right-click on the header bar and click on Select Columns in this menu.Locate Autostart Location and check it.If you want, you can add other columns to Process Explorer as wellClick ok

The autostart location column is listed at the rightmost location and you usually need to expand its width to make it usable. All processes listed with an entry in the column are launched during system boot.

Having the information displayed to you is however only one part of the service that Process Explorer makes available. While you could certainly open the Windows Registry Editor manually now to check up on the start up entry, you can do so directly from within Process Explorer as well.

Select a process that you are interested in and tap on the enter key to display its properties window. You can alternatively right-click the line and select Properties from the context menu.

Here you see detailed information about the selected process. Locate the two Explore buttons of the Image tab. The first one next to Path opens the folder the file is stored in in Windows Explorer, the second the autostart location in the Windows Registry. From there it is only a matter of seconds to disable an autostart entry or make modifications to it.

Sometimes though you may want to make the modifications elsewhere, for instance if the process is launched by a service starting with the operating system. Process Explorer does not help you here, but it should not be that much of a problem to launch the Services management window to manage the services in there.

Please note that you may need to run Process Explorer with administrative privileges if you want to make use of the Explore feature launching the Windows Registry Editor.

The biggest issue however was the fixed content width, which resulted in a large whitespace area on the page on big screens. If you viewed Google+ in fullscreen on large computer monitors, you’d see a large whitespace area on the site. It is not clear why Google designed the site to be this way. Some say it is in preparation for new features that will take up that space, but that could mean that small screen users would miss out on those features.

The Internet community developed dozens of solutions (see To Much Whitespace On Google+? Reduce It! for some) that resolved the issue temporarily. Most either center the contents on the screen, or dynamically adjust the width of the content section based on the size of the browser window.

GExtend for the Chrome browser is one of those extensions. It automatically changes the width of the content area on Google+ based on the width of the browser window. The content area is adjusted dynamically whenever you change the size of the window, which feels like the best solution right now.

The developer notes that his solution is only temporary, and that it will become obsolete once the Google+ team starts to fill the whitespace with contents. The extension itself is not perfect, as it breaks search on the site which is something that needs to be considered. If you do not use search, you may want to give it a try though.

Imo.im is a web based service that lets you sign in to several popular messaging services that include heavyweights such as MSN, Skype, Facebook, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk and VKontakte. You can use your service credentials to sign in on the Imo.im website to chat with your contacts right on the site. Imo.im furthermore makes available mobile apps for all major operating systems including iOS, Android, Blackberry and Nokia devices.

Pidgin (Windows, Mac, Linux) supports all major protocols and chat networks, including MSN, AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and IRC.  It supports plugins which can add support for additional services or protocols to the instant messaging client plus improvements in security or privacy, notifications, the interface, and various other elements of the client.

Miro Media Player 5 Release Candidate Out, Final Version Soon

The developers of Miro have released a first release candidate of the upcoming Miro 5 version. Miro at its core is a media player with Internet connectivity built right into the software. The software can play back media formats and supports the playing and downloading of media from the Internet.

You can use it to manage your local video and audio library, go to video hosting sites like YouTube from within the program interface to watch and download videos from there,  subscribe to podcasts, download torrent files, or make use of the channels and shows offered by Miro. Channels include the ever popular Ted Talks, Buzz out Loud or the Discovery Channel Video podcast. You can subscribe to these channels to receive updates when new items are published.

A lot has changed since our initial review in 2008 and last year’s update to Miro 4. The developers behind Miro have now released the first release candidate of the upcoming version 5. This is a test version which is not suited yet for productive environments. While the majority of features work without larger issues, you will come upon  a few bugs in that version, like the inability to minimize the program version using the button at the top of the window.

When you look at the program interface you will notice that it looks more or less identical to previous versions. The developers claim massive updates to the Windows backend of the software.

The new version of Miro now supports downloading HD videos from Vimeo feeds, faster device syncing and format conversions, song information and album art lookup, and a new album view mode that groups together songs by album and artist.

Interested users can download the release candidate of Miro 5 from the official blog. Downloads are provided for Windows and Mac Os X, and the source code.

New users should check out the Get Started section for an overview of some of the things that Miro allows them to do.
