For Expats in Manila - A Guide to Why You Must Live in a Makati Condo or Apartment

Living in the Philippines certainly has its rewards. Manila is one of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia, and it's one of the most thriving in the region too. An intriguing thing about Manila is that apart from the capital, it may also refer to other parts of the metropolitan area. This includes cities such as Pasay, Paranaque, Quezon City, and thirteen others. Of all the urban areas, however, Makati is the most prominent since it is home to the country's Central Business District. If you're looking for a place to live in the Philippines, this may have to be it. This article is a guide to why you should live in a Makati condo, apartment, or home; and ways to look for the best one.

Why Makati?

Locals and foreigners alike recognize Makati for its cosmopolitan culture. This is the reason why a lot of expatriates like to live and work in the city. It is where you can find a wide array of commercial establishments that is probably the most diverse in the entire country. Examples of these are the Ayala Center, found at the corners of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA, Metro Manila's main thoroughfare) and Ayala Avenue. This extensive block features a number of shopping malls that appeal to the needs of all shoppers.

While on the topic of Ayala Avenue, here is the country's most prime stretch of real estate. You may even compare it to Orchard Road in Singapore, or Wall Street in New York. Offices and residential units in this area will probably cost you a substantial amount of money. If you are searching for a reasonably priced condominium unit or apartment for rent in Makati, it would probably be easier for you to take a look at nearby areas.

Aside from the shopping, another great draw to the city is its culture. Various districts accommodate different tastes. For instance, Jupiter Avenue accommodates the young and hip crowd with its various bars and restaurants. Pasong Tamo, however, caters to the East Asian expat community and could even be Manila's Little Japan. Malugay Street in the San Antonio area of the city plays host to The Collective, an establishment that accommodates the underground and indie art scene.

Where can I live in the city?

Those who are serious about moving to the city have lots of options, whether it be a Makati condo, apartment, or residence. For example, the Rockwell Center is a growing community located only a few minutes away from the central business district. This area contains the Bel-Air subdivision, along with a number of high-rise buildings which have condominium units and apartments. If you are more partial to an actual house, there are several places to pick from like Magallanes, Dasmarinas, Urdaneta, and San Lorenzo villages.

Most expats to the country, however, choose to live in a Makati condo, reason being that it's far more convenient and accessible to different attractions in the city. If making your way around is your concern, don't worry as there are many forms of public transportation available.

Looking for a condo, house, or apartment for rent in Makati is easy. Rather than going all over the city, use a website to locate a home that will fit your taste and budget.

Command & Conquer Remake In HTML5, JavaScript

I was a fan of the Dune games on the Commodore Amiga, and later on of Command & Conquer on the PC even though I preferred Blizzard’s Warcraft series over the Westwood game. Most games in the Command & Conquer universe afterwards failed to impress me though.

Imagine my excitement when I heard that Aditya Ravi Shankar has started to port the classic Command & Conquer game to HTML5 and JavaScript.

The developer has released an impressive looking preview version that is allowing you to play the beginning of the campaign.

You start with two light tanks and a base unit that can build your base on the map. From there you start building up your base, adding power plants, a refinery to harvest and weapons factories to produce troops to fight the enemy.

The developer has made the decision to use the game’s original control mechanism. This means that you control and move units with the left mouse button. You can draw a rectangle across multiple units to control them together. The Ctrl-[0-9] keys allow you to create control groups which you can then activate with another tap on the selected key.

The current game version 0.3d runs best in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, according to the developer. My personal experience was different though. The Firefox version lagged significantly, the Chrome version a little bit less. It did however refresh the border of the game window several times per second which made the game unplayable in the browser. The Opera version was the one that ran smoothly and without issues. I also tried running the game in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 but never came past the loading screen on that machine.

The developer, who is currently looking for volunteers to push the project forward, aims to take the project as far as possible. According to information posted on the site, he plans to integrate multiplayer later on.

There is one issue though that could torpedo the project. If the current rights holder, that would be EA if my information are correct, would put an end to the project. Nevertheless, the game shows great promise, and I personally would not mind playing through the campaign again in a web browser, provided that it works smoothly in there.

If you're planning a wedding and have not made any decisions about your venue, you may want to consider a wedding on a yacht.

Sure, it's unconventional; your guest list would likely have to shrink a little and you probably want to be someone who enjoys the feel of swaying out on the sea or a yacht wedding probably won't be your thing. But if it could be, there are many things to consider and it's worth every minute of your time.

Wedding ceremonies are celebrated in different ways all around the world. In some villages of the far East, ceremonies are held beneath tents in the open fields, while in Native American tribes nuptial rituals often involve a sweat lodge bachelor party the night before followed by a fire-side celebration and week-long feast.

One of the most exciting weddings and widely growing options for ceremonies is the wedding on a yacht and there are plenty of companies and private individuals out there offering yachts for rent. Whether it's the holiday office party or the day of your wedding, you do not have to own a yacht to tie the knot on one.

A few things to keep in mind:

Yachts for rent for ceremonies can hold from 10 to 1000 people, so choosing the right size yacht would be your primary concern. Too big and you may not be able to find some of your guests. Too small and your party may be cramped leaving uncomfortable guests wanting to escape.
Food on a Yacht offers just as many options as the more traditional land based venues. You can choose from a buffet, sit-down style dinner or you may want to consider light finger foods. Think of a cocktail party style setting with guests mingling and moving around on foot most of the time.
Enchanted sunsets from a yacht make for beautiful wedding memories and, as a result, everyone wants an evening ceremony to include the sunset. Keep this in mind as you plan so that, should you select to have your ceremony at sea you book your time slot in advance and have all the logistics down for getting guests on the yacht in time to get out to sea and have the sunset as the backdrop while you say your "I dos."
Many companies who offer yachts for rent for ceremonies will require your guests to sign liability waivers to cover the company in case a guest is sick or is injured on the yacht. You may also be asked to ensure that your guests are all given some form of pre-event safety instructions. These are not necessarily celebratory issues but they may be necessary.
Music is a must for any wedding, regardless of where you hold it, so be sure and book a band ahead of time that has no issues with playing on yacht. They will require a pre-visit to the yacht to ensure they have space and sufficient electrical outlets. Keep this in mind as you are interviewing yacht rental companies and ask if they charge for a site visit for vendors.
Make sure the yacht you select has a separate area for you and your wedding party to slip away and have a moment of privacy, change clothes or prepare for the ceremony. Some smaller yachts do not offer separate cabin space and, once on board, you are pretty much stuck in the clothes you came on with.
Fees are not necessarily more expensive than a wedding hall or church venue, but they may be more tricky manage. Many yacht rental companies will ask for additional deposits to cover damages and they may also ask for you to carry an insurance rider. Be sure to ask about these issues when you start interviewing different yacht rental agencies.
Consider a one-stop shop and hire a company that specializes in yacht weddings with an event planner who can do everything from securing your ceremony date; ordering food; decorating; lighting; music and all the necessary insurance, waivers and safety rule logistics. You may pay a little more for this, but it could be worth it just to have the ability to not have to worry about it!

ShowMeTrend Links Twitter Tags To Web News

The messaging platform Twitter can be used for trending purposes. The more users talk tweet about a certain topic, the more popular it has to be. While it is not possible to say that with absolute certainty, as other factors like automation play a role as well, it can often act as an indicator. Twitter displays the top ten trending topics for a single country, with options to change the country to another one on the page.

While it is possible to read the messages on Twitter about a trending topic, it is not guaranteed that you will see any links in the messages that you are reading.

That’s where the web service ShowMeTrend comes into play. The service links the top 10 Twitter trends of a particular day to Google News articles about that particular topic.

The trending topics get updated regularly, and it appears as if the links from Google News are pulled more or less whenever they appear there. All news articles are linking directly to the site they have been published on. It is furthermore possible to open Google News’ listing of all related news, or to go back and forward one news entry on the ShowMeTrend website.

Selections can be made at the top to switch from the day’s worldwide trends to country specific and date/time specific trends. About ten countries can be selected, from Germany and the United States to the Netherlands, UK or Brazil. The service’s back catalog of Twitter trends begins in October 2011, which is an indicator that it is a relatively new service. Users can not only select the date but also the time of a day to get a listing of trending topics.

One of the issues that the developers need to fix is the lack of links for some topics. Some trends show a white listing and not a single news item. One of the options here would be to either improve the search algorithm or to use additional news sources besides Google News.

Opera’s New Address Bar Suggestions Face Criticism

Opera, in the most recent stable version of the web browser, and also in the latest snapshot build, has made changes to the browser’s address bar suggestion feature. This feature basically handles the suggestions the browser displays when the user begins to type in the address bar. Users in the Opera forum were the first to spot the differences. Two aspects that got criticized heavily were the reduced number of entries from bookmarks and history, and the drop of interactivity features like middle-clicking to open a result in a new browser tab.

Opera today has announced that improvements are also coming to Opera 12.00, the next version of the browser that is currently under development. The old system, according to Daniel Aleksandersen, matched the terms the user entered against the page url, title or page content and ordered them by last visit.

Opera’s new system assigns a score to each suggestion that is based on additional factors like the position of the term in the url, the number of matches or the position or if the match is a bookmark.

The feature is still in development, as Opera is still working on integrating the browser’s Speed Dial feature and improving the scoring algorithm further.

Suggestions seem to favor search heavily in the current build, which has been one of the points of criticism. Another that it is now more difficulty to distinguish between sources, that site identification has become more difficulty as favicons have been removed, and that it sometimes is not clear why a page has been added to the suggestions.

In my own tests, I was unable to get suggestions if the entered phase did not start at the beginning of the url. The term hack for instance did not list lifehacker or ghacks in the suggestions.

It is my opinion a step in the wrong direction. Keep in mind though that this is not final and may see improvements in future builds. You can download the latest Opera Next version from the Opera Desktop Team blog.

The Windows 8 “Consumer Preview”, What’s in a Name?

It is widely expected that when Microsoft launch the Windows 8 beta in a few weeks that it will be labelled the “Windows 8 Consumer Preview”.  This has alarmed and concerned many IT Pros who feel that Windows 8 is cutting them out with Microsoft putting all the focus on consumers and tablets with its new Metro interface.  I thought this deserved some discussion, especially in light of the concerns that IT Pros, businesses and enthusiasts currently have.

Let’s look first at the missing IT Pro features in the Developer Preview and what this release was actually for.  Microsoft are going after the tablet market aggressively, frankly they have no choice to do this now or to wave goodbye to it forever.  This is why Windows 8's new Start Screen and Metro apps have been engineered the way they have.  Nobody can blame them for this either.  As we all now know from smartphones and tablets, any platform will live or die on the quality and quantity of the apps available for it.  Let’s just look at what happened to HP’s TouchPad, with the same now beginning to happen to the RIM Playbook.

For this reason it is essential that Windows 8 have a critical mass of Metro apps available in the new Windows store on the day that Windows 8 goes on sale.  The only way to do this is to start early, and the only way to get developers writing for the new interface and platform is to give them a copy to play with.  It was far from essential therefore that anything other than Metro was actually working for the giveaway date at their BUILD developer conference last September.

This doesn’t mean that Windows 8 will be bereft of IT Pro features, it just means that Microsoft’s focus in the run up to September was finishing Metro and making sure it was stable.  Microsoft have told me privately that plenty of new features for IT Pros simply weren’t finished by then.  They are coming and will all be finished for the beta.  In fact that build of Windows 8 will already have been signed off by now and will be going into escrow this week.

Microsoft have a huge mountain to climb in the tablet market and they’ve got to create a buzz with the beta.  Some people at the company have admitted to me privately that the company made a mistake in releasing the Developer Preview publicly instead of just through developer channels.  People downloaded it, expecting it to be a finished product and it simply wasn’t.  This has resulted in the new OS getting large volumes of negative publicity and people damning the finished product when they’ve actually seen less than half of it.

So why Consumer Preview then if IT Pros hated the Developer Preview?  Microsoft need to get consumers worldwide downloading, installing and using the Windows 8 beta in their multi-millions.  They need people talking on blogs and forums and in the press about how much they love it to spur on developers in writing apps for the platform.  Microsoft haven’t released any figures yet about how quickly Metro apps are being written, but this could mean it’s off to a slow start potentially.  Generating excitement and press coverage then is huge.  This doesn’t mean that the IT Pro features won’t be there, just that Microsoft have got to get Metro off to a flying start from being three or four years behind the market leaders.

The company will also want to completely differentiate the latest release from the Developer Preview by indicating that they were both completely different builds and intended for completely different audiences.  Simply calling it the beta next month wouldn’t do this and many people might assume that it will just include a few tweaks and bells on top of what was seen in September.  Thus this differentiation is absolutely necessary.  Especially given Microsoft’s private admission that a public release was an error last time.

The other reason to call it a Consumer Preview is that, for a while at least, all the media attention will be on the new Metro interface.  Microsoft know this and will try to use this coverage to spurr on app developers.  In short it’s actually quiite a clever move calling it this.   It doesn’t mean, as I’ve already said, that it won’t include the ability to switch off the new Start Screen, or won’t include Hyper-V, new multi-monitor tools and much more besides.  It is, frankly, just a name and IT Pros need not be concerned any longer.

SmartCopyTool Lets You Copy Files From Large Folder Structures

If you are using Windows Explorer for your file copying jobs you have probably noticed that it is not the best tool for advanced operations like copying all mp3 files in a folder structure to another folder, or merging directories. That is where specialized tools like SmartCopyTool come into play. The free program lets you copy files from different folders almost effortlessly.

When you first start the program you are asked to pick a root folder first. This is the folder that you want to copy or move files from. You can then use the filter options under Options > Set Filters to define which files you would like to see in the listing. For music files, you would for instance use *.mp3 as a filter. This displays all mp3 files in the program interface.

You can naturally filter by name as well, or add multiple filters to the mix, for instance to list all music files and not only mp3 files.

The tool offers multiple options to work with the filtered file listing. It is for instance possible to select some or all of the files before copying or moving them to another directory.

The developer of the program originally created it to move part of his 500 Gigabyte mp3 collection to a portable device. It quickly evolved though and can now also be used for backup and synchronization purposes.

Smart Copy files can be used to synchronize a filtered list with another directory. Always wanted to have all your photos from all folders on your hard drive backed up in another folder?
