How To Reload Previous Firefox Sessions

You can configure the Firefox web browser to reload the last session on start up. That’s a custom setting that you need to configure under Firefox > Options, the General tab there and the selection of Show my windows and tabs from last time. When you do that, the browser opens all tabs that you had open when you quit the browser. On my computer, it seems to load the last open window more often than not, which can be attributed to the fact that you can only close one window at a time. If you’d kill the Firefox process, or have the browser restarted automatically, you’d probably end up with all windows being opened again as well.

It has happened in the past on my system, that Firefox would not load the session. The browser instead displayed the selected homepage instead with no sign of the tabs that were open in the last session

Firefox comes with options to restore the windows and tabs of a previous browsing session. You can access the listing under Firefox > History > Recently Closed Windows. Here you find the windows listed by the tab that was last active. When you click on one of the sessions, the whole window with all of its tabs gets restored.

Remember that those information are only displayed if you do not clear your browsing history on exit. If you have configured Firefox to do that, you won’t be able to restore sessions. This is handled by the browsing history setting. You can configure everything else to be deleted, and still be able to restore sessions in the browser. If you select to delete the browsing history, you cannot restore sessions. You will in fact notice right away that you are starting with a single page in the browser after you have enabled it.

You can however disable remember by browsing and download history on the main privacy options page without losing the functionality to restore sessions in the browser. Feels kinda strange though if you ask me.

If you have very important sessions that you cannot afford to lose no matter what, you may want to consider upping the ante by installing an extension like Session Manager which saves sessions independently. Handy to avoid total disaster if the built-in session restore is not working correctly, or if you want the browsing history to be deleted on exit.

Microsoft Reduces Touchscreen Lag To 1ms

One of the issues with most touch-enabled devices on the market today is that they have a visible input lag when you work with them. According to research Microsoft conducted, the lag’s about 100ms on modern touchscreen devices, with some devices having less lag, and some even more than that. The effect is less visible on devices with smaller screens, handhelds or smartphones for example, and more visible on tablets and other larger touch-enabled devices.

To put it in understandable terms: The average user moves the finger at about 1 meter per second on touch devices, and a lag of 100ms would mean that the response lags a tenth behind on the screen (which is 10 centimeters).

Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group published a video that is demonstrating some of the improvements that they have come up with to reduce the input lag down to 1ms. If you put that into perspective, the input lag would be reduced to 0.1 centimeters which makes it more or less invisible to the human eye.

The research term has released a video that demonstrates the device’s capabilities.

The video demonstrates the difference between 100ms and 1ms input lag in realtime and footage taken at 1/8 speed to visualize it even better.

Reducing the input lag to 1ms gives the interaction with the device a more natural feel, which the majority of touch-based applications could benefit from.

Microsoft is showing off a prototype device in the video, and it is not clear if and when this technology will be available on the market.

If you are testing the lag on your touch-based devices, would you say that it is noticeable, barely noticeable or not noticeable at all? I tested it on my Samsung Android phone and lag was noticeable despite the small size of the screen.

Amazon’s Kindle Reader is a big success for the online shopping giant. One of the reasons for the success is the cross-promotion that Amazon is running on the highly frequented shopping portal website. Kindle Reader or Fire owners can purchase books optimized for the reader on the Amazon website. As part of the promotion, free Kindle ebooks are offered on the site next to regular ebooks that need to be bought before they can be read.

What many users do not know is that they can download and read the free ebooks even if they do not own a Kindle. How is that possible? With Kindle software readers of course. Amazon has created free reading apps for many mobile devices and desktop operating systems. At the time of writing, the Kindle Reader software is available for Windows PCs, Apple Macintosh systems as well as iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices. Back in my youth I sat at home with a ZX Spectrum dreaming of the day I might one day be able to carry a computer around with me.  A few short years later and there I am with a Psion Organiser II, then a Series 3 (several of them in fact) and a Psion Series 5… Suffice to say I was a fan.  Mobile computing was fantastic but wouldn’t it be brilliant if I could also have a phone when out and about so that I could call people.  Then I got my first mobile phone, complete with the offer of “all calls, all weekend, every weekend for a year for free”.  This, I discovered included International calls and just about everything else too.  For some reason Cellnet in the UK never repeated the offer!

So armed with a Psion and a Mobile Phone I then wanted to be able to send messages and emails from my Psion the way I could with the desktop computers at college.  It took some time that one passing through my first laptop along the way and we still had to invent WiFi.

Now all my childhood dreams have been realised.  I have a Windows Phone from which I can message and email to my heart’s delight, a laptop containing both WiFi and a SIM card so I’m never away from a data connection when I don’t want to be, and a powerful desktop PC at home for everything else.  You might think then that I’d be ecstatically happy and over the moon to have all these opportunities, or that perhaps I’d be looking to the next big thing, like a Satellite phone or 4G.  Well think again because the whole lot has made me utterly miserable and I’m buying a watch.

Like many of you I live a working and home life of ICT.  It’s everywhere, I have to work on my laptop during the day writing Windows 8 books, when I’m relaxing I’ll either sit at my Windows 7 desktop PC or lounge around on the sofa with my Blackberry Playbook tablet.  When I’m out walking the dog I can stay in touch using my smartphone.  On top of this I’m currently testing two more laptops, an ultrabook and a 3D Gaming laptop (reviews to come here soon), both from Samsung.  In short, it doesn’t matter where I look or where I go I can’t get away from technology.

The dream I wished for as a youngster has become a curse of always on, always connected availability.  There’s no getting away from work, no getting away from technology and the first thing I see every day is an email from Groupon.

So then, the best advice surely is to go out down the pub, don’t mind if I do, thanks for the offer, I’ll have a Bitburger please, and leave the smartphone at home.  This of course presents another problem and highlights one of the most common uses for mobile phones these days.  We might use them 20% of the time for making calls and 30% of the time for checking email or browsing the web, but we use them the other 50% of the time to see what time of day it is.  Yup, smartphones long ago became clock and watch replacements, in fact I don’t actually have a single clock in my home (other than the one that’s sitting in the spare room in a box) and consequently didn’t have to worry about putting anything forward yesterday morning for summer time.

I’m not the only person feeling this, it’s a growing problem facing society.  Technology fatigue manifests itself in many ways, commonly as being unable to escape from work and from the boss.  There’s just no getting away from it unless you shy away from the technology we all know and love and start to think more like the little old ladies we all thought were a little bit crazy for being completely uninterested in getting online.

So I’m going to buy myself a watch.  My birthday’s coming up and it will be a special treat.  It means I will finally be able to leave the smartphone at home, and the laptop, and the tablet, and go out into the big wide world not knowing or caring who the hell wants to get my attention and why.  Will I miss anything urgent?  Have a think about the last time someone contacted you about something genuinely urgent for the answer to that question.  We all need a break from technology fatigue, and I’m about to get mine.

While I was never a watch-wearer to begin with, except for my first watch after Kindergarten, I tend to use my phone quite often to look at the time.

I personally cannot really escape from the Internet for a longer period of time, as it is my job and all. If that would not be the case, I would not have a problem staying absent for a longer period of time.

Not only can I respect this move, but it makes me want to do the same. My phone is almost part of my body these days. It would be good to leave it at home and get out and play some tennis or something. I already have the watch, and it’s not even digital.

I always wear a watch. It brings back many (good/bad) old memories when I look at it. It is not easily replaceable as cellphones, pc, tablets, etc.

Adjusting the time on the wall clock is a good thing. It reminds me to check the smoke dectector batteries, check the a/c unit, check the airways, and other things that need to be done/check once in a while.

If anyone wants to have some useful skills, Home Depot (in this case) offers free “do-it-yourself” classes on weekends. It’s a good opportunity to get hand-on experience.

This is hilarious. But then, I’m old (53). Going out into the world without a technological tether seems to scare the _hit out of young people. Even thinking you have to have a watch with you at all times is a crutch. We learned to estimate the time. If we needed more precision, we used to either look around for a clock or point to our wrist while asking someone around us what time it was. We told time in five-minute increments, or even fifteen-minute increments, not one-minute increments. The answers we got when asking what time it was were “a quarter after,” or “ten ’til,” not “seven forty-two.” Will it matter to anyone if the time is seven forty-two instead of seven forty-one? If so, then time is being over-managed. In our cars, we just turned on the AM radio to the local news station “with traffic and weather every ten minutes,” or looked around for a clock while driving. The constant connection offers no real advantage. Nothing important will be missed while you walk your dog or eat lunch out without some data connection to the Net. I can’t believe this even needs to be said.

A couple times a year my wife and I will go away on a weekend together – with ZERO technology. We leave our phones at home and give our hotel number to whomever is watching the kids. We don’t even turn on a TV, and usually don’t turn on a radio either. IT’S FANTASTIC! We read books, play board games, go out to eat etc. with no blinking, beeping, facebook status-ing etc. to distract us!

The watch idea is a good one – I’ve gone so far as to carry a pocket-watch at times but then I still have my work phone too, so I’ve given that up. Good luck to you – enjoy the watch (and no bluetoothing, connected type watch either – go old school analog with sweeping hands etc.!)

I don’t have Internet connections always on on my phone, so I don’t get work e-mail there.

My team lead is my friend, so he never calls me when there is no need.

In contrast, I feel more passion about technology, then fatigue. I’m technology fan since my 5, in 1982, and I still didn’t get enough of it.

But I have a watch too, and thinking about buying one more, if they fit me better.

One of the big reasons why I stopped wearing a watch is because it clanks on the desk/laptop when you type. …besides the constant pinching/grabbing of wrist skin/hair.

When some one wearing The Latest Smart Thing on their belt asks me for the time, it is great fun is to look at my watch and give them a reading that’s off by 30 minutes.

Mike, make sure your new watch is a mechanical auto-wind-up type. You want to avoid the pleasure of finding a merchant who will replace the battery for less than $25. Or if you want to do it yourself, find the one you need from the selection of the 85000 “watch batteries” in existence. That’s if you can figure out how to open the watch. Pry, twist, snap – front bezel, rear cap?? And if you know how to find the PCB pad which needs to be shorted to the battery’s case momentarily to reset the watch. If you have the special tool, of course. (Tip: a small fine point tweezers will work.) Remember that watch battery life as advertised is like that for laptops…

Increasing Social Networking Diversity

A large majority of people in today's society feel the need to increase their network, and rightfully so. Some prefer the face-to-face form of networking, and most cities present numerous ways to do this. Chamber of Commerce events, Kiwanis and Toastmasters clubs, high-society events, and cultural performances such as the opera and theatre all provide networking opportunities. An attendee merely has to strike up a conversation while waiting in line or even seated before the start of the meeting or event to establish a connection with a total stranger.

Of course networking also takes place online daily. Websites such as Facebook and LinkedIn have allowed those intimidated by face to face networking to effectively increase their networks from the comfort of their office or home quite easily. Some people spend lots of time on these sites weekly or even daily and find great benefits from the time invested. Many times participation in a online discussion or group can lead quite naturally to a networking connection. Networking sites are usually fairly easy to navigate, and many have groups that answer frequently asked questions as to how to setup a profile and adjust privacy settings, drastically reducing the intimidation factor for some.

Volunteering for a local organization is another great way to increase your network. Meeting others with similar convictions while helping a good cause is without a doubt great use of a person's time. This can be a simple as participating in a 5K run for charity or spending time at an organization several times a month, and can result in lasting and meaningful connections with others.

You can also increase your network by talking to those you naturally interact with on a regular basis. Many times people rush from one obligation to another, ignoring those in their path and missing potentially beneficial connections. Stopping to talk with the people you may encounter dropping their child off at karate or gymnastics week after week may not be a bad idea. A simple conversation could eventually lead to a business deal or new career opportunity. All because the time was taken to initiate a conversation.

So who really needs to network Business owners network to increase exposure to their company. Entrepreneurs network to discuss ideas and strategies with like-minded individuals or seasoned business owners. Salespeople network to bring exposure to their company, and potentially commissions to their bank account. Those new to a city network to meet new friends. Job seekers network to find their next opportunity. Extroverts who live or work alone may network to simply feel energized in a crowd of people.

Attending networking events where you meet others face to face as well as connecting with others online can be beneficial to most people. After all, it can be all about who you know. So the next time a friend or colleague suggests attending a networking event or creating a profile on a popular social networking site, why not give it a try.

System Rescue CD, Windows Repair and Recovery Tool Collection

Windows users have several options at hand when their system does not boot anymore. They can try to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore to recovery the system to a previous state, or use repair options on the Windows CD to repair the issue. When Windows 8 gets released, options get even better with the included reset and refresh options.

Sometimes though you may need something more powerful, for instance if you need to correct partitioning errors or recover files from a failing hard drive.

System Rescue CD is a Linux Live CD that has been specifically designed for repair and rescue operations. You should not get too confused with the CD in the application’s name though, as you can also install the contents on an USB stick instead which is handy for PCs that do not come with an optical drive anymore (See this manual page for the Windows installer link, and Linux console commands to create the USB version of the rescue disc).

Everyone else can download System Rescue CD as an iso image from the project website. When you first boot either from the rescue CD or USB drive, you get to see the following boot menu. A tap on the enter key loads the system with the default boot options.

Znless you have selected different settings during creation, the CD will load the console if you select the default options. You can type wizard and select a graphical user interface to boot into an interface that should be more pleasing to the average user. Linux buffs on the other hand who feel at home using the console can use it for all recovery and repair options.

From here, you can start programs like the file explorer Midnight Commander, the partitioning tool Gparted, the data recovery tool Testdisk, a CD and DVD burner, or the antivirus software Clam.

You also get access to a web browser or mail reader, in case you need to look up information on the Internet. System Rescue CD is one of those useful-to-have tools when disaster strikes. It is best used in situations where standard recovery options fail, especially after hard drive crashes and other emergencies.
